@tyseyh - see you've got Ti installed so how was rooting it? Looks pretty easy if you have unlockable bootloader - what happens if you're unlucky to get one that isn't, like the guy who posted in the root forum on here ?

That Ascend does look good - pity I'll never be able to ask for one in the shops unless I can drag a Geordie (never seen it spelt as "jordies" btw ) off the street though

I wasn't sure which way to go. I made the decision to go with the J. Clearly it was the wrong choice.

I ain't rooted it. TI is there because I paid for it when I used my Desire.
Not going to root until the official ICS comes out.

Its The Jocks and the Geordies that always confuses me. Thats where my J comes from.

What's a Loiner? I'm Half Portuguese, Half East Midlands if that helps, but I live in leeds.

This ascend d quad XL looks awesome. Teh more I watch and read, the more I'm sold on it. 2500 mAh Battery, that appears to be removable, SD card slot, Tegra 3 + S4 beating CPU, 1GB RAM, 4.5 inch display with more DPI than Apple's Retina....

Its not the most exciting looking device, but it looks better in videos than photos, how it reacts with the light.

Waiting with baited breath..... I cant see anything beating this in the next 6 months.

Yeah, the Ascend looks promising. Will be really interesting to hear what the real reviews say about it.

The build quality is my main concern. Having a the equivalent of a PVT1 Desire is not very tempting (changed mainboard twice due to overheating, and suffering the occasional freeze once again).

It's scheduled for a Q3 release in Sweden, as far as I can tell, which would make it pretty interesting. I could wait out the first batch, and get it after the worst crinkles were ironed out. Maybe...

One, the price. I'm poor and 99 with contract is just so cheap. Two, the build quality is supposed to be amazing. Three, the camera is supposed to be really good. Four-ish, A change kinda sounds nice. And WP7 certainly is a change from Android. I don't know yet, I'm really torn apart and conflicted about it. It won't be for a bit, so I guess I'm just going to have to wait and see.

As a small taste. Also, I'm in the process of switching back to Oxygen, putting launcher7 on it, then finding wp7 contacts and dialer to just kinda of get as much of a "semi" experience with it. Try and help make my mind up.

Wp7 is nice when you need to quickly use someone's phone, but it's far too restrictive for general use for me.

My contract runs out in April. I could switch providers, but as it's a business account it'll be a pain, so I'd rather not if I can help it. Can't really afford a handset only and Orange don't have much that looks desirable at the moment. Plus I have no need/want to switch my phone yet, the dGB on the Desire meets all current needs.

So I'm going to wait and see what the B2G stuff looks like when it comes out - it's looking promising at the moment, and with DT on board, there's a fair chance Orange will get the handsets. It's not that I have any real issues with Android (though the reliance on Google services is a bit of a pain, eg it'd be nice to have a non-google calendar that easily synchs to text files on the laptop), but the html5 nature of b2g makes the customisation potential very high. How it is in reality remains to be seen. So I've started reading around it, as it's a very interesting idea (might be flawed, might be brilliant, we'll see).

Anyway, unless I drop it in a peat bog, or the buttons fail (no sign yet), I'll be sticking with the Desire for at least another six months, I should think.

My current favourite is the HTC One X. I did like the look of the Sony Xperia S but it already seems a bit outdated, being dual core rather than quad, and running Gingerbread instead of ICS, and despite being a big fan of Sony phones - the best phones I've ever had - these two things have put me off.

I do like the build of HTC phones and unlike most others here I really like Sense as it just "works" with no faffing about required. I won't be using my phone for music or games, and don't install many apps, so the fixed storage isn't an issue for me, and I doubt I'll be rooting it - I rooted my Desire but didn't really gain much from it. The One X looks fantastic to me, especially in white, but at the moment I'm waiting to see some reviews of it.

As with everyone else I'm also keen to find out more about the Samsung Galaxy 3 too. Hopefully that won't be too far off. I was looking at the Note this weekend and it looks great, and I don't even think the size is too off-putting... but using it on a day to day basis may prove otherwise.

I've discovered that the screen doesn't mix well with millstone grit, either. Not much does, for that matter.

Yeah, I was quite impressed with Sense, too. For a corporate interface it is/was(?) very good. Some people have gone to a lot of effort to get a very similar effect. However, once you start replacing sense apps, there's little reason to keep it - esp. on a Desire with small memory. My wife has kept her Desire as stock, and there are some interesting trade-offs when I use her phone.

With a beefily spec'd phone I could see strong arguments to keeping it (or at least moving to a ROM that uses it).

I totally agree. But having said that, I remember when I first got my phone; Sense is a nice introduction to the capabilities of android, due to the wow factor of all the widgets already set up on your home screens.

Of course you soon bin them to make room for your choice apps, but it's a nice welcome to the platform.

For me though, my choice to root was governed by my desire (sorry) to upgrade to gingerbread and the consequent dawning realization about how much needless space Sense takes up on your phone.

I didn't find that, but the Desire had been out a while when I got mine, so it may have been a more stable version. Or maybe I don't hammer the device as much as some people.

yup. Hated sense as well. That wad the first thing to go when I rooted. Never looked back.

For me it was rock solid - I've had my Desire for two years now and it has never caused me any problems, apart from when I get the "low disk space" message, at which point I just go and clear my caches etc. - so I've not encountered any bugs and I think it looks fantastic too. When I tried dGB I loved the added storage space and improved performance but I really missed the whole slickness of Sense, and despite trying numerous widgets etc. I never found any I liked as much as the Sense ones.

I know there are Sense ROMs for the Desire but when I've looked at them I always seem to find lots of bugs being reported and to be honest I'm happy enough with my Desire on the developer 2.3 build. Sure, if HTC had seen fit to release ICS I'd have been champing at the bit to get it, but the time has come to upgrade and it is highly likely I'll end up with another HTC if I don't go for the Samsung.
