I got a text message from Cricket saying I can tether/hotspot my mercury for $10 a month. I've used the hotspot a hand full of time & just randomly got this message from cricket today. I've subscribed to cricket on a monthly basis but has any1 gotten a message like this? This phone is fuggn bomb a BS aside.

Yeah I don't think cricket knows that the mercury has it already built in. (Or at least they are hoping customers won't notice.) Works fine for me and I don't pay anything extra. If they change it I'll be PISSED because so far I have not found any need to root this phone. Huawei really upped their game on this little beast.

Haven't got the text, but I was trying to get on the internet one day and got redirected to a Cricket page that said the same thing. It wouldn't even let me get on the internet without restarting my phone, and I wasn't even tethering! Believe me, Cricket knows about this, and I have a feeling it has something to do with the "shortage" of Mercurys going around. I GUARANTEE that the first "update" Cricket pushes out for this phone the tethering will be disabled. We only get 1GB of data and now they want us to pay twice to use it? They can kiss my ass. Anyone who is able to, root and let Cricket suck it!

+1....I can see this being dealt with in an update to the phone...wonder if anyone else can chime in if they've gotten this text...

Well at I'm not the only one get this text..it still works as a hotspots since receiving the initial email but will they pro rate bill?...I guess I'll see in my first bill
Since Cricket is pre paid, I don't think they can do that, but don't quote me on that. I think they are just trying to get people to stop using it until they find a way to block it and put their own Cricket tethering app on there.

I got the text around the same time as everyone else did. The text did mention to call cricket for more info. I'm surprised no one has called yet, but I'm pretty sure I know why no one has.

Afraid they might turn off your hotspot ability, plus speaking to those indians can get frustrating.

Anyhow mine still works. I'm hoping that the fee is only for more data or something to that affect.

I never called them but I get redirected to a "sign up for tethering" page if I try to use it.

This is interesting indeed as it seems some users can use their mercury as a hot spot and some can not. I can not. When my laptop is hot-spotted to the mercury, it works for about 5-10 seconds of browsing and then it gets the $10 fee page and stops working.

I wonder if this is caused by some phones being more "up to date" than others in regards to the software on the phone. Mine was shipped to me at the end of Feb 2012. Maybe users that got their phone before that date can still hot spot?!

This mercury is my first smart phone so bear with me but, some people said that this device can hot spot natively?? (some how getting around this problem) How? There is only one place in the phone that I've seen to turn the hot spot on or off. Are there two ways?

Second nube question: does rooting get around this? i dont mind rooting this phone as long as it wont kill it. Is rooting risky (as in dangerous that you might mess up the phone)? I'd really hate to have to buy another phone just because rooting it messed it up.

Wow. That's scary and sucks. Had no idea they did that.

.

That's an interesting idea as I did get my phone the first day it was available...I think on Dec 18 or so...but I'm no expert either.

Another possibility might be location. I'm in lower Texas, maybe they started earlier in other states such as the west coast. Maybe someone from Texas can chime in.

I've been using my hotspot to my laptop to write this message so once again still working here.

Wow so your blocked from using it? Does the device your tethering to redirect you, or the does your phone?

I just had to retest mine to make sure, and all is still good here.

The device im tethering to redirects but Ive only tried it on a PC, not sure what would happen if I tried it with my Ipod touch etc. Ill try it in a bit.

This is what I see:

I've received both the text and the redirect, (randomly, when I wasn't even trying to tether) but tried it on my PS3 last night, and it was still working so far. I have the older 2.3.5 build. I read somewhere that the USB tethering was blocked, but hotspot was still working for some people. I haven't tried it using USB, so I can't confirm that. I've only tried the hotspot.

I never tried pluging in my USB to my computer to see if that works so I figured what the hell. Anyhow I'm using it now and it works, so I have access to hotspot and using usb tethering. I can't help, but be extremely happy that everything still works.

I noticed you mentioned the older 2.3.5 build. That's of course what I have since I bought it the first day. but what are they offering now? 2.3.6? That's just a guess.

Also, do you mind mentioning what state u live in?

I'm in Ohio, and yeah, the newer ones are shipping with 2.3.6. I think the guy who mentioned getting redirected with the USB method was using the newer version.
