Root LG Marquee (Boost Mobile) won't activate due to odd network errors...

I have changed the topic title. Now that I changed the MSL back to the original one the phone originally had and in turn got DM mode working, I am now in need of help with my primary problem. I can't get the phone to activate. I get a intermittent error code 131 network error when the phone tries to update it's profile. I get a generic network error when the phone tries to do a hands free activation.

I can manually program the MDN and MSID and get phone calling and texting to work, but anything data related doesn't work.

My last resort is to pony up $279 for a brand new one and send this phone back to seller and get a refund. (I paid for $219 on a ebay listing and it was a reputable seller with very good feedback).

This phone is in really good cosmetic condition. No scratches or scuffs and it's practically new looking. I just can't get that darn 3G data to work due to the network errors.

So right now I need to find a way of fixing this. Any way to flash the default network settings back to stock? Or perhaps there's a reletively quick fix for it at the Boost Mobile store out of town that I can take it to. Perhaps with their specialized hardware/software, they can properly diagnose what's going wrong and reset it.

The usual SCRTN and DTN resets don't work by the way. I've already gone through Boost's rather lame technical support and they gave up. They didn't even offer to try and help me program it manually, which I know is possible. If only I could retrieve my login address that was in the DATA hidden menu. (I recall seeing it on the prevail before the touch screen issue came about). So that's where I could start in terms of manually activating the 3G data. I can program the phone to call and text, so that's half the battle.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to have to send this phone back and have to wait another week to get a new one. :(

I've searched through google and this forum and haven't been able to find out how. It seems many of the hidden menu codes for this phone are different then the usual ones for the Prevail that I had before this one.

So two questions for one.

First question, how do I put this phone in DM mode? The ##8778# code doesn't work with this phone.
:(

I want to update to a sprint PRL among other things. (this is the Boost version of the phone).

Second question. How do I change the MSL on this phone? I bought this one off eBay and it seems the seller changed it. It's 000000 instead of the MSL that Boost gives me to activate it, so something has gone funky here. I want to change it to the official MSL that Boost assigned to this phone.

EDIT: Ok now I can focus on trying to get the phone to activate properly. I've edited the main topic post so that's what I'm really trying to fix now.

Doesn't work. QPST says no phone on port and CDMA Workshop says "Phone Does not Answer"

EDIT: Ok noticed that if I boot the Prevail into CWM it will be in debug mode.

I will root and install CWM to the Marquee and see how it goes from there.

EDIT: Got root and CWM and booted into CWM. Still no DM mode. Phone's diagnostic port will show up, but will get same problem. No phone in QPST and phone doesn't answer in CDMA Workshop.

Also, Tech support with Boost didn't pan out, so I need to know what my options are for resetting the network settings for this phone. I'm guessing the previous owner screwed them up. Can anyone dump their network settings and PM them to me (minus any personal info of coarse)? I can go into some of the hidden menus and verify if they are set up correctly.

I need to find a way to reset this phone's network setting to stock. The usual data wipe and hidden menu resets won't be enough for this. The fact that the MSL is no longer the correct one means someone has definitely been messing with the internal settings to this one. Though the ESN is still intact, so it's not totally fu***. :p

Doing this would be much easier if I can get this phone to go into DM mode. I will take a look at trying the script that is normally used for CM7/CM9 and see if I can get it that way. That didn't work either. :(

EDIT: Finally got DM mode. 8778 menu doesn't exist but the ##7678# still does and got DM mode working with that one. Don't know why it took me so long to try the second one. :p

Still trying to figure out how to fix the network settings in the phone.

Is it possible this phone has a defective 3G radio?

I've noticed this phone does not remember certain settings correctly when it reboots. After doing a power off and turning it back on, it will not remember the state Wifi was in and I have to turn it back on again. It also does not retain the setting for DM mode and any time I restart the phone, I have to go back into the hidden menu and turn it back on.

I tried Boost's tech support but they gave up and just told me it's defective. Data wipes, full factory reset via at least 3 different hidden menu codes have failed to resolve the issue.

The fact that the MSL code had been altered indicates that perhaps the previous owner of this phone either had a similar issue or had a botched attempt to port it to a different carrier.

For all I know this phone is a Sprint phone that someone ported to Boost but screwed it up in the process. Due to the altered MSL code and such, there's no way of really knowing for sure other then that I will have to return the phone.

Once my ebay listing for my 3DS ends and I get my refund for this phone, I will just buy it brand new from Boost's website or from a retailer out of town (since my local Wal-Mart does not carry this phone).

Does Wal-Mart still carry this phone? I find it odd my local town Wal-Mart doesn't (it is a super center). I guess my Wal-Mart is just a little bit too small I guess. Their phone selection ain't to great.

The LG Marquee doesn't appear to show up at all on their website though which leads me to believe no Wal-Mart anywhere carries it anymore. But that's odd sine the Prevail has been around much longer and they still carry that one.

Radio shack

Does Radio shack carry Boost phones? I checked their website and they mainly have the main carrier phone. I didn't see any prepaid networks. I'll do a search on their website to double check.

Thus far no success on getting the phone to activate. I went into the logs via the error hidden menu and the main message it shows when it tries to connect is "Unknown Data Error". I may call the Sprint/Boost store out of town from me and see if they can reprogram it. It may be cheaper then the extra 70 or so bucks of getting one brand new.

I already opened a case on eBay and will return it to the seller if Boost doesn't want to touch it.

EDIT. Well hell yes, it's available at my local Radio shack! And it's one of the small ones that hardly have anything so I'm surprised. :p I had to look a little closely at the site to find the "Prepaid Phones" section. :p But yep they have them (according to their store checker). Thanks to my small town, the Radio Shack is less then a mile from me and can get there in about 3 minutes on a bicycle. :D

Though it's too bad Wal-Mart doesn't have them. I work at Wal-Mart and can use my discount card at any Wal-Mart. Would have save me at least $25. (or what ever 10% of 279 is. :p )

Hey monster, would you be able to dump some of the network settings (if you have this phone?) I have been in the phone with QPST (there isn't much to look at in CDMA workshop so I won't use that one anymore. :p ) and found verious things that are not the same as my Prevail, but since i don't have a second working Marquee, I have no way of knowing. I had tried manually adding my 3G data account info to the MIPs tab in QPST, but that still doesn't seem to get it working. (at that point it would stop trying to activate on it's own, but the activation option would still show up in the settings menu and phone status menu)

I know of some hidden menu dialer codes, but there could be a few more out there I don't know about that may help.

There's a 50/50 chance it's just screwed up settings in the 3G radio. Also, any way of tricking the LG Support tool into updating my phone? It's already up to date, so it refuses to do anything to it.... :(

You can buy them brand new on ebay for 240 bucks that is where I got mine and my wife's

Uhm did you read my thread at all? I got this phone off eBay for $219 or so (and it was advertised to be in great condition and working order which I'm sure the seller did indeed have, but I guess I won the ebay lottery and got the one bad apple in his phone stock. :p )

...so why would I exchange it for another eBay phone? Not going through that again. At this point if I can't this phone working, it's going back to sender for refund and will get one brand new at a retail location. I've been without a phone for too long to justify having to wait for yet another phone to show up in the mail that might be another DOA. :p

I ordered mine through eBay and have had no problems with it. Like Tryingtoroot said, you can get brand new ones for around $140. The one i received was still in all of its packaging. If you get one that is still sealed then you have the same chance of getting a bad phone as if you got one from Radio Shack. I even had the option of the warranty through Boost. I would look into *NEW* from eBay before spending more on it from a retail store.

I did read your thread, you bought a used one. I was recommending you purchase a new sealed one. You will be protected by paypal as well.Apparently you didn't like my recommendation, so just ignore it, don't be a smart ass. You may need assistance in the future. Good luck to you.

I wasn't trying to be a smart ass. :p

The point is not really ebay, but that I would have to wait double time for the new phone if I got it off the internet. Sure there's expedited shipping, but that's expensive. I already have to wait 3 or so days for the phone to go back to the seller and then wait however long it takes for him to process the phone.

Then I'd have to wait another 3 days for the new phone to arrive if I get it online. I'd rather spend a few extra bucks and get a new one immediately. :D

I don't have a backup phone, so when I send this phone back, I will not be able to receive calls or text messages.

Found something interesting. When I went into the device test hidden menu and did a test in the SW Sanity check menu, the FPRI fails the test. I assume this is the PRI to the phone which is related to the PRL but not directly the same thing.

So I know how to update the PRL, but what about the PRI? It's possible the phone has a bad PRI and that may be the cause.

I work for Boost Mobile and it sounds to me like it was a failed flash. We had a customer attempt to use one of our phones with Cricket. Well the flash failed and we were unable to get it to work on ours either. It was in no-mans land. I assume the only way to fix that is probably a full wipe of everything off the phone and reloading the software.

Glad you were able to return it though. Sounds like it was hassle. =\
