Bricked phone after OTA update?

So if my phone becomes a paper weight after the OTA rolls out then Verizon did it on purpose right? You can't tell me they can't force the OTA to override the leaked version. I would think they would force all the phones to update to their version of the OS.

Therefore, if my phone bricks after the OTA then they are just being jerks right?

Where did you get the idea that this is even a possibility? I highly doubt that they care enough about a small portion of users installing the leak to go out of their way to screw you over on the OTA. That would require extra work on their part to brick your phone, which is unlikely to say the least.

You'll probably get the OTA just like everyone who's still on 1.5 and not have any issues...

People running the version of 2.1 that was posted earlier this week are running the exact same version as all of the OFFICIAL Verizon Wireless testers. Meaning, that if they for some reason decided to send out an update to intentionally brick phones running the 2.1 leak, all of their testers would also lose their phones.

Not to mention, the idea of a company intentionally designing their software to kill phones that are on their network and a source of income to them is completely contrary to their goals. Less phones on your network means less money in their pockets. Since they're a corporation and love themselves some money, they're not going to intentionally do anything that could negatively affect their bottom line.

If anything, all of the geeked out early adopters running the leak are drumming up some free PR for them and their line of newer Android 2.1 capable phones. We don't shut up about all the sweet stuff our phones can do and show anyone who holds still long enough for us to reach into our pockets. Our big mouths and nerding out saves them money in their advertising budget.

Lastly, those of us running the 2.1 leaked ROM aren't doing anything remotely illegal or wrong. None of us has defrauded Verizon Wireless in any way, or stolen their intellectual property. We're simply running a newer (not yet ready for primetime) version of a software that they're planning on giving us for free anyhow.

I know there's a lot of rumor and speculation floating around right now concerning the leak, using it and your phone exploding, bricking or simply getting up and running away in the night, but none of these are true. So far I haven't heard of a single person bricking their phone. I think Droid.Eris (the forum user, not the actual phone,) had some issues with getting the firmware to work on his phone and may have bunged something up, but if I read correctly, he took his phone to a Verizon store and they promptly replaced it.

Long story short: No, they're not going to intentionally kill your phone if you install the 2.1 leak.

Only Apple does stuff like that.

No, Crapple would not do anything of that nature. Crapple only does the most morally correct, socially responsible, consumer loving things they can possibly think of. They would NEVER lock their users into doing things their way and only their way. It's counter to the entire Crapple philosophy, as put down by the prophet Steve Jobs.

Give me a break. Verizon doesn't give a CRAP about this leak, they really don't. Those who installed the leak are literally less than 1% of those that own the Eris. Verizon doesn't care, the leak will not influence their procedure in any way.

Does that mean we can get those little 1% patches like outlaw bikers wear? ;)

I actually found an iphone once and read up on what happens if you activate it. The answer is nothing. They'll let you activate it even if someone called it in as stolen. It's all just more subscribers to them. Kind of lame (and entertaining reading if you enjoy people being furious at apple). That's in the US, in England they do have some kind of iphone black list but its effectiveness sounded questionable from what I read.

Cell phone companies are in the biz of getting as many phones as possible on their network, not worrying about who is installing what on the phone. Apple on the other hand doesnt care who uses the phone, just as long as youre using it the way they want you too.

So the OTA that rolls out will look at my phone and conclude I'm running the exact same version? If so, then why are they waiting to release the OTA? It's already leaked right? Even you stated the leaked version is not ready for primetime. So that means the OTA will be ready for primetime. Which means, they are different correct? And if they are in fact different then the leakers won't have what the OTA'ers have. Consequently, we won't get any future updates correct?

The build number will probably be different, but the Kernel version could be the same.....or vice versa.

That's what I'm hoping BTW. But in the back of my mind I'm a little concerned.

This goes back to my original point. If leakers don't get the update then they purposely left us out correct? The OTA must see that my leaked version is different than the OTA version by the build number correct? Which means, if I don't get the OTA update then they intentionally left us out. They have to know people have downloaded the leak by now? I don't know as I am not techno savvy like most. I'm just trying to set up my appeal if I get bricked. I'm thinking there is no reason everyone shouldn't get the OTA version because Verizon should want everyone running the same thing right?

The Kernel version and Build number would have to be the exact same in both the leaked version and the OTA for the update to pass us by. This isn't going to happen. HTC/Verizon will get the kinks worked out and a new build/version will be created.

Funny, it seems a lot of Android users are still scared/jealous/covetous of Apple and the iPhone.

I can't speak for others, but I think it is junk.

Why would your phone be bricked after an OTA update? If for some strange reason it is, then you just take it to Verizon and tell them that the update broke your phone. They will either fix it or give you a new one.

And if anyone is worried about not receiving the OTA update just because they installed the "leaked" version of 2.1, it's not that big of a deal. You could still download the update from Verizon's website and install it the same way...

Well, device developers sure were/are. Thus the growing competition in the face of iPhone.

I think Android stuff is kicking Apple's butt. Some of the tactics out there, aside from the software development, are interesting to behold (Google, etc).

But even Motorola has responded well, not to mention HTC (look at all those goodies HTC has on the market now :)).

iPhone started something, caused some jealousy, and now is being left in the dust.

i dont think they are being left in the dust just yet....but in due time.

They are certainly running scared. I heard that the iPhone has a worse battery life than 1.5 (way, way worse than 2.1) Any confirmation on that? My friend always makes fun of me because he can load all his apps on his SD card or whatever that brick uses. He has 250 apps he told me. Haha, asked him to give me a definition of a word on his dictionary app and he couldn't even find it. Translated it to Greek, however.

because once it's official.. annoying people like me can tie up their tech support instead of complaining on here if not everything works. Sometimes it makes me wonder why theyd do it at all, unless it's easier to have all the phones on the same OS.

The 2.1 that leaked is quite likely not the finished product. I don't know if the build number will change, but it's obviously buggy as heck, as reported in forums here and other sites, so I'd be quite surprised if this version you have is the completed update for the this device.

If it is I'm going to attempt to keep 1.5. If that is not possible then the Eris will no longer be for me, as I've been reading around the bug and fixes threads here and there.
