Ignore anotherfandroid. He's a self-admitted troll, as his sig makes it obvious. I'm surprised he hasn't been banned yet, seeing that he only posts to shit-stir and nothing else.
Keep in mind that I've rooted my phone and loaded custom ROMs and kernels onto it, so my experience is slightly different: my phone runs much better-optimized hardware. The good news is, since the N1 is so easy to root, you too can reap the bounty of rooting. But even before rooting, I experienced no slow-downs, no random reboots, no dust under screen (though I did heat up the adhesive and press the screen down for good measure). There's little the phone doesn't do--it fulfills all the day-to-day functions of a smartphone (hint: more than the iPhone can ever dream to, on account of lacking multi-tasking capabilities) and goes well beyond that. Syncing with Google is invaluable. I wipe my phone fairly often to try on new ROMs, and every time there's no fear of losing contact information, calendar, whatever. It's fantastic.
