Nexus 1, is it really worth it?

I'm looking for a 2 sided argument her, could someone sum up all the bad and good about the nexus 1, including bugs. I want to get it because it would mean getting all of googles latest software upfront, the hero is still running 1.6 so i dont want to get a desire and wait a year for a software update, which one do you think is better, honestly.

It sounds like you've already made up your mind. Google apps, latest firmware.

I don't have any issues with my N1, had it for a few months now and I'm loving the switch from my iPhone. Being 'legally' able to access the bare bones of my phone is exactly what I miss since getting an iPhone. I don't like jumping through hoops and Android is perfect for walking in the front door.

The soft-touch buttons can sometimes annoy me. I find them hard to press with the tip of my finger, rather the full flat surface of my finger (preferably thumb) seems to work almost 100% of the time.

I don't honestly notice any increased speed over my iPhone 3GS as I guess each device is designed with the OS in mind. I suffer from no lag when opening apps, no lag while using apps. Boot up times can sometimes be a little bit long but using a ROM such as Cyanogen it seems much faster. I also have an app called Startup Auditor which allows me to disable things from starting on boot.

With all this said, I haven't used any other HTC phone which would obviously include the Desire. I would like to help and comment on those but cannot. Hopefully someone else can help you out there.

I still think it's more of a personal decision though and you need to make up your own mind.

i dont have a N1 because it's a phone that is full of hardware problems and bugs. every couple of days, a new bug/glitch is discovered and reported. it is ridiculous. now, you dont have to take my word for it; all you need to do is some research on this forum and you will get the same conclusion. now how do you explain the satisfaction of users like kaotix? well, he/she is among the lucky ones who have good N1s. what i am trying to say is that the N1's problem is QC/QA, in the sense that some phones are good and others are bad. there is no way to guarantee that u'll get a good phone, and for the unlocked price, i think everyone deserves a good phone. heck there are even reports that the touchscreen cracks on its own from regular low stress levels. now there's this whole thing about multi-touch being sub par, compared to the droid...not to mention the 3g issues, build quality, trackball light issues, choppy scrolling, and a whole bunch of others.

All you have todo is read your sig to discredit your entire argument.
As for the low stress level cracking, I had mine in. Don't of a huge bonfire yesterday. No issues. Dropped in on several rocks. No cracks. Had it in my jeans while trying to push the tractor out of the mud. No flex cracking. No dust, no case, no scratches, trackballs fine.... idk what people do to these phones... but mines great.

cool thanks man, i guess software bugs can be fixed by updates, the hardware sounds quality.

I am very happy with my N1. Vanilla Android now has more features and therefore makes it easier to come from the Sense version on the Hero. It's not perfect and in my view has minor annoyances:

Some slight occasional slowdown when scrolling through homescreens.

Radio (signal) could be better. Holding the phone at the base issue.

My phone has started to reboot on it's own occasionally but this could be a rogue app.

Facebook sync with contacts overrides the names currently stored for full Facebook names (bye bye contacts list nicknames).

On the other side though, I have not experienced any of the following:

Poor screen calibration.
Dust under the screen
Poor battery (well it is but no worse than another large screen smartphone).
Overheating
Cracked screen (I have dropped it quite badly and thought it was a gonner!)

I recommend this device thoroughly.

Ignore anotherfandroid. He's a self-admitted troll, as his sig makes it obvious. I'm surprised he hasn't been banned yet, seeing that he only posts to shit-stir and nothing else.

Keep in mind that I've rooted my phone and loaded custom ROMs and kernels onto it, so my experience is slightly different: my phone runs much better-optimized hardware. The good news is, since the N1 is so easy to root, you too can reap the bounty of rooting. But even before rooting, I experienced no slow-downs, no random reboots, no dust under screen (though I did heat up the adhesive and press the screen down for good measure). There's little the phone doesn't do--it fulfills all the day-to-day functions of a smartphone (hint: more than the iPhone can ever dream to, on account of lacking multi-tasking capabilities) and goes well beyond that. Syncing with Google is invaluable. I wipe my phone fairly often to try on new ROMs, and every time there's no fear of losing contact information, calendar, whatever. It's fantastic.

+1 to custom ROMs. This has been the main reason I am literally loving my N1 at the moment. The community support for such customization is just awesome. Some people really know what they're doing when it comes to android OS and to make a ROM that is more stable, quicker and generally better than the company that makes the OS is saying something.

I haven't experienced any hardware issues at all *touch wood*
My battery seems fine (custom ROM) and I have no dust under my touch screen. I'm quite careful with my phones and I generally never drop them but I would like to think that if I did that my phone could handle it.

If you've watched the videos from Google on the entire build process and other parts you would be amazed at the things they put it through that you could see happening on a day-to-day basis.

I've had mine for about a month. It's a great - but not perfect - phone. I assume you know all of the pros, so I'll just tell you what I don't like, or think could have been improved.

Cons:
  • Multi touch is limited. What this means is you can do the standard pinch to zoom stuff, but some games that use complex on screen multi-touch controls might not work well.
  • Screen could be a little brighter in sunlight, though it's not nearly as bad as engadget would like you to believe.
  • Crappy speaker (personal pet peeve).
  • Occasionally won't restart after a shutdown without removing battery.
  • No official car dock*

Some people have 3G issues, for me it's only an occasional issue but not enough to bother me and overall coverage in my area (St. Louis) is good.

So overall, it's a great phone, and since I was coming from a dumb-phone I was very eager to get the latest and greatest. If I currently had an Android phone, the equation might be a little different.

*Where's my car dock, dammit?!
