android IS doomed because open source sux

like communism, open source/free OS sounds great on paper, but lousy in real life.

so people thought because android is free, users would get the updated versions of the OS as soon as they came out, that the update would be full as opposed to partials, and free of charge. but nothing is further from the truth.

the mt3g is stuck with android 1.6, and so are a bunch of other android phones.
the droid is getting the 2.1 update but it wont be the full version of 2.1; from what i understand, it will be missing something.
newest android version is never free of charge because you actually need to buy a new phone to get it. so if you want android 2.1 and you have a mt3g, tuff luck cus u need to spend money and buy the N1. bogus!!
the multiple versions in multiple phones with different hardware limitations with multiple versions of one version has resulted in android's "fragmentation", which also messes up the android market, limiting availability of certain apps to certain phones. another reason y open source sux....

doesnt anybody see this? r people in denial?

LOL, I think you totally missed the point of Open Source software. It doesn't mean software is free as is gratis/libre and it doesn't mean you get frequent updates as soon as they come out. All it means is you have access to the source code and can modify and use it how ever you want. Free as in Freedom not free from cost.

newest android version is never free of charge because you actually need to buy a new phone to get it.

Not true, you are free to download it and do whatever you want with it from here...

you are dumb...just root, and you get any updates you want months before carriers decide if you can or not. You don't realize that it isn't an android problem, or an opensource problem you describe...it is a carrier problem. That is why everyone should buy their phoens outright, and never sign a contract. I bought my n1 outright, have a 60/month to month contract, and can sell it whenever i want to upgrade to the next great phone. I rooted and installed cyanogen on the 1st day i had it, and I got all updates(multitouch)weeks before my non-rooted n1. Android is so far superior to iphone os because of this openness, that we will see android surpass iphone sales this year...and all the good developers will jump ship to android.

LOL this is the most non-logical post I've ever seen on this forum.

Android will certainly not fail. Android is absolutely essential for the future of Google.

I wouldn't say it's ESSENTIAL, but rather SUPPLEMENTAL, and yes I believe my temporary banning was a load of hooey and a personal vendetta. But I suppose that's only an opinion, as I have nothing but innuendo and circumstance to support it.

Welcome (Android Open Source Project)

you need root so that does not count. if anyone can get it, why do droid users wait for verizon's OTA?

you r dumber for 4 reasons:
1-u did not understand the main points of my arguments
2-u r rude
3-u took the risk of bricking ur phone while u rooted.
4-u suggest rooting for other people. FYI, if u must root ur phone to get an updated OS, then it does not count.

, hardware and carriers will limit who can get updates. If a phone just doesn't have the power to run the latest version how would you expect that to happen?

very true! but the outcome is the same: users are NOT gettng the updated OS, period.

So, let's see your credentials. Do you know much of anything about software development? At all?

It's hilarious how you ignore the "all Android phones will get updated to 2.1" news.

it's even more hilarious how you ignore the fact that "will" in your statement means unspecified date in the future. y is mt3g still on 1.6? blame it on t-mo. blame it on HTC, but the outcome is THE SAME: people are just not gettin the updated OS, period.

you mean like a 32 bit os versus a 64 bit os? Same thing but different capabilities.

wow now why would they want to tailor an operating system to the abilities of the phone? that just sounds like liberal brainwashing to me, no reason to not just run 1.6 on the droid even though it has more memory and more processing power.

i think you, sir, miss the point of android in the first place. Adaptable, intuitive, and you can fix whatever bugs you like, instead of waiting for windoze to fix their proprietary mess.

frankly, i did not understand your first two paragraphs. elaborate. as far as adaptable, i am not sure what u mean. intuitive? i disagree. users fixing bugs? that's only if the user is a tech whiz! what if you're just a normal average guy who wants a phone that works like a champ right out of the box? so if android is intuitive and has user-fixable bugs, then answer the question:

i had a mt3g (1.6 version) and had handcent sms. everytime i wanted to send a txt msg, the stupid phone asks "complete action using..GV, handcent, messenger, sipdroid....blah blah" and off course, i not only select the application but i also tell stupid android which application i want as the default. u'd figure that android would know the default app next time but NO! the stupid idiot android keeps askin the same freakin question "complete action using..." it's cus the ******ed OS does not work. so much for adabtability. it did the same thing with superdial and any other system replacement app that i had. so my question to you is this? how do you fix this bug?

what the hell did you get banned for? i read most of your posts as well as a few others , because of your knowledge about android, I never saw anything for you to get banned

Linux, the open source unix that android is based on, is a growing and thriving enterprise in and of itself on servers and PCs; Android will do so as well both on phones and "pads". There are differences in versions and devices, but mostly, it means lots of options. No, each device won't get upgraded. How many winmo or iphones have been updated for free, from the manufacturer or service provider - to a new version? How many new iphones come out per year, versus android options. Will the Android market continue to be more fractured than the tightly controlled OSs, of COURSE it will. Which do you think will see the most innovation, that can and will be moved to new devices - at least going forward, and in some cases, backwards? The single source OS's, like winmo or apple, or Android? I know the answer, hopefully it is now obvious to you.

Folks have to get over the desire that their older, outdated (think one year MAX) hardware will get updated; some will, but it's luck of the draw. The hardware evolves so much every year, the older devices won't stay compatible. I don't want the devs spending serious time on backwards compatibility. I want them to concentrate on the future - and that's what they always do regardless of what I think! So, you'll see the most alternatives, with the best chance of updates (without rooting) on Android. If you're willing to root, your options go up WAY faster than any other device.

Hope this helps.

No, you are mistaking the architecture for the applications you are using. Why did you get a little girl's android phone anyways? Perhaps you should have gotten a phone with more ass and the more elaborate version of android.

And thanks to the poster above me, we can

"predictable" is not a contribution to this discussion. i got the mt3g the day it was released, before the droid existed so dont give me that little girl android phone nonsense. at the time mt3g came out, it was the stock in trade.....again, you have not contributed anything valuable to this thread.

i understand ur point. i guess at the end of the day, android rewards the geek and the risk-taker who roots and hence is not for everyone. this is why i think it's going no where. the geeks will always prefer android no matter what. the rest of the crowd will buy android phones only because of a lack of better options; the average verizon, t-mobile, and sprint customer is buying the android phone for its hardware and for the absence of good palm hardware and absence of the iphone. the minute a true average consumer device such as iphone or a good plam device shows up on the shelf, android looses its appeal. it is google's saving grace that palm cannot produce good hardware. by the same token, it is google's saving grace that iphone is only on at and t.

The irony here is killing me. Really.

"you r dumber for 4 reasons"

Gotta love when someone calls someone dumb when they don't use correct grammar. Just saying.

sorry no time to spell check. btw, it's very unimaginative to call people out on their grammar in forums like these.

I wasn't calling you out, I was pointing out irony, difference. I find it funny that someone who wants to be "corrective" of another individual blatantly makes mistakes of his own. Like the saying goes, what goes around comes around.

I dont really want to wade into this one but isnt your problem with handcent. The phone is only as good as the software. Android is a great starting point of an OS. My phone works better for me than any other similar operating system. Updates will happen but dont expect problems to go away with the latest version. Its just not realistic. But that goes for the Iphone, Blackberry and Windows software too.

Well said.

*Applause*

The way Apple deals with these problems IMO is they just leave the feature out completely. MMS anyone?

Open source is communism now? No, not really. One big difference is that in a communist society, you don't get to choose whether to do your job. That's why people start slacking off at work and productivity for the entire country hits the shits.

Open source software, on the other hand, people who want to program will do it anyway. They actually care, no one is forcing them to do crap. The downside is the lack of polish, but that isn't always an issue.
