so people thought because android is free, users would get the updated versions of the OS as soon as they came out, that the update would be full as opposed to partials, and free of charge. but nothing is further from the truth.

the mt3g is stuck with android 1.6, and so are a bunch of other android phones.
the droid is getting the 2.1 update but it wont be the full version of 2.1; from what i understand, it will be missing something.
newest android version is never free of charge because you actually need to buy a new phone to get it. so if you want android 2.1 and you have a mt3g, tuff luck cus u need to spend money and buy the N1. bogus!!
the multiple versions in multiple phones with different hardware limitations with multiple versions of one version has resulted in android's "fragmentation", which also messes up the android market, limiting availability of certain apps to certain phones. another reason y open source sux....

LOL, I think you totally missed the point of Open Source software. It doesn't mean software is free as is gratis/libre and it doesn't mean you get frequent updates as soon as they come out. All it means is you have access to the source code and can modify and use it how ever you want. Free as in Freedom not free from cost.

You don't realize that it isn't an android problem, or an opensource problem you describe...it is a carrier problem. That is why everyone should buy their phoens outright, and never sign a contract. I bought my n1 outright, have a 60/month to month contract, and can sell it whenever i want to upgrade to the next great phone. I rooted and installed cyanogen on the 1st day i had it, and I got all updates(multitouch)weeks before my non-rooted n1. Android is so far superior to iphone os because of this openness, that we will see android surpass iphone sales this year...and all the good developers will jump ship to android.

wow now why would they want to tailor an operating system to the abilities of the phone? that just sounds like liberal brainwashing to me, no reason to not just run 1.6 on the droid even though it has more memory and more processing power.

Linux, the open source unix that android is based on, is a growing and thriving enterprise in and of itself on servers and PCs; Android will do so as well both on phones and "pads". There are differences in versions and devices, but mostly, it means lots of options. No, each device won't get upgraded. How many winmo or iphones have been updated for free, from the manufacturer or service provider - to a new version? How many new iphones come out per year, versus android options. Will the Android market continue to be more fractured than the tightly controlled OSs, of COURSE it will. Which do you think will see the most innovation, that can and will be moved to new devices - at least going forward, and in some cases, backwards? The single source OS's, like winmo or apple, or Android? I know the answer, hopefully it is now obvious to you.

Folks have to get over the desire that their older, outdated (think one year MAX) hardware will get updated; some will, but it's luck of the draw. The hardware evolves so much every year, the older devices won't stay compatible. I don't want the devs spending serious time on backwards compatibility. I want them to concentrate on the future - and that's what they always do regardless of what I think! So, you'll see the most alternatives, with the best chance of updates (without rooting) on Android. If you're willing to root, your options go up WAY faster than any other device.

"predictable" is not a contribution to this discussion. i got the mt3g the day it was released, before the droid existed so dont give me that little girl android phone nonsense. at the time mt3g came out, it was the stock in trade.....again, you have not contributed anything valuable to this thread.

i understand ur point. i guess at the end of the day, android rewards the geek and the risk-taker who roots and hence is not for everyone. this is why i think it's going no where. the geeks will always prefer android no matter what. the rest of the crowd will buy android phones only because of a lack of better options; the average verizon, t-mobile, and sprint customer is buying the android phone for its hardware and for the absence of good palm hardware and absence of the iphone. the minute a true average consumer device such as iphone or a good plam device shows up on the shelf, android looses its appeal. it is google's saving grace that palm cannot produce good hardware. by the same token, it is google's saving grace that iphone is only on at and t.

I dont really want to wade into this one but isnt your problem with handcent. The phone is only as good as the software. Android is a great starting point of an OS. My phone works better for me than any other similar operating system. Updates will happen but dont expect problems to go away with the latest version. Its just not realistic. Open source is communism now? No, not really. One big difference is that in a communist society, you don't get to choose whether to do your job. That's why people start slacking off at work and productivity for the entire country hits the shits.

Open source software, on the other hand, people who want to program will do it anyway. They actually care, no one is forcing them to do crap. The downside is the lack of polish, but that isn't always an issue.
