MMS Download KNOWN ISSUE

Two Heroes in my household. One has MMS download issues and the other one does not.

About two weeks ago I could send but could not receive MMS pics. It would have a download button that when pushed would cause the word "downloading" to appear indefinitely, but no download...

Took it to the local Sprint Service center to take a look at it. They said leave it here for 2 hours so we can fix it. It's not a known issue. We will probably have to reset your phone (read: Officially -"never heard of that problem", unofficially - "oh, another one of these").

Two hours later (really?? two hours to do a hard reset??) we picked up the phone and it seemed to be working. Downside: all contacts were duplicated and all the apps/settings had to be re-done. Not surprised about the latter, bugged by both.

One week later the problem is back. MMS won't download again. Sends pics just fine. This time I call Cust Svc and quickly get transferred to the advanced technical guys who tell me that.....

THIS IS A KNOWN SOFTWARE ISSUE THAT HTC IS WORKING ON

Wow. Ok. So do I have to do a hard reset? Nope. I was instructed to dial ##XXXXXX# (XXXXXX = your MSL, unique to your phone) and go to edit mode and erase and re-enter both the mobile number and the MSID exactly as they were before and then press the menu button and select "commit changes". It says nothing changed, but apparently this resets the connection. Then I was instructed to go to ##3282# to check the MSID and make sure it was the same. No problems there.

Customer Service guy sent me a picture MMS and I received it. YAY! Thank you thank you and hang up.

I tried again from another phone and..............Downloading......

NOT WORKING AGAIN (within minutes)

Call back to Cust Svc - quick transfer to the technical dept.

"Yup, that's a know issue. HTC is working on it and they haven't sent out the software update yet. We're really sorry. I can call you back in a week and let you know if there is a fix yet. Let my manager talk to you."
manager-"We're sorry, we can't fix it. If you get survey, answer question number 5 with "I don't know" so that we don't get a bad review like we would if you answer "NO""

So, if you've read this far, thanks. I don't know if anyone else has better advice to make this work like it should. I hope the software upgrade is something that comes sooner than 2.1. I appreciate the helpful spirit of those that recommend rooting, but I'm not ready to do that, nor do I really want to.

I know there are others who have had this problem (since it's finally a "known" issue). What have your experiences been?

matbob,
thanks for your post. and to those others that posted similar threads on this issue. i just started having this issue (as far as i know) on friday. i've had the phone for about 6 months. not rooted and only 3 simple apps/widgets have been on my phone. i was also part of the group that had problems just receiving regular texts intermittently early on. got a new phone and bamm - still same issue. quit blaming it on the physical device and start fixing the sprint/phone interfacing issue! there are 3 hero's in my household (with varying usage) and mine's the only one doing this.

friday night i talked with up to 4 sprint techs and adv techs (total talk time of about 3 hrs). each had different techniques to solve this. tried everything that OP mentioned. one rep said that she has to "reset the data cache" every 6 months on her smart sprint phone. one guy even mentioned that restarting my account (w/o extending my 2 yrs) has fixed it. right. nothing worked and some advice actually made my data connection get disconnected or get the error code 67. "hard reset" my &ss! i'm glad i'm getting feedback that that is only a temp fix before i did it. i had to argue with a adv tech "mgr" because he was saying they could fix it and i didn't want to (hard reset). yeah, look who's f$%*ing wrong now. yeah, still pissed, just ranting. i ended up getting a "small" credit because sprint is so effed right now with the androids. when i argued with the amount, they said to be happy because they aren't supposed to give any credits for "software" issues! yeah, right, call enough times and someone (not even a mgr) will give you a credit - no questions. ranting over.

what i did try was to reduce things taking up memory. don't think it has done much. i also noticed that with the buildup of pic texts that weren't downloaded to my phone yet, i get old pic texts very very slowly (but only a fraction of them).

anyways, from the lack of urgency of this issue on this forum, it seems like a smaller problem than i imagined, but i don't believe it.

**people - test it out by having a friend send you a pic text or send one to yourself!

thanks,
-s

I have seen this issue sort of simmering here but not get really hot for weeks now. Many of the people who experienced it reported that when they called in to CS that they told them it was not a known issue. At least now I have confirmation from Sprint CS that it is a KNOWN issue and they admit it and HTC is supposedly working on it.

They told me that the problem is some software interference with some program, they just haven't figured out what yet. They said that some users were having trouble downloading data through email and that some were having the picture MMS issues I have. It apparently has to do with some software update. I suspect they are related, but it is strange that they seem to manifest randomly.

I take what they say with a grain of salt considering that they are not the ones trying to fix the problem, much less software engineers. They only know what they are told and then they have to repeat it to us. Pardon the pun but it's like a bad game of telephone (where each person whispers the message to the next until the end when the message is nowhere near its original). I at least hope that HTC is truly working to resolve the issue and that the fix doesn't have to wait till 2.1 drops.

I have also experienced this problem (I also use Handcent). The download issue started about a month after I got the phone and after calling Sprint they told me that I needed to hard reset the phone or exchange it. After about a month I finally gave in and did the hard reset but a month later the problem was back. In my opinion hard resetting my phone once a month and having to recustomize everything just isn't worth it. So I have been having people send the pics to my gmail or I go to the Sprint picture mail website to view them. I also sometimes get a "hiddensenderaddress" message after getting some MMS as well. And sometimes the MMS only shows up in my notification bar but when I click to open the message it disappears and doesn't show up in the thread. Even the disappearing messages will be on the Sprint picture mail website though.
