Hey I have a new esteem and I don't know how high I can overclock it without it rebooting and what not. I know with set CPU that you can uncheck set on boot. Will that work? Any ideas on how to check without reflashing
MAKE SURE YOU DON'T check the SET ON BOOT box until you find a stable clock speed.
To find you highest stable clock, just start at a clock speed like 1.7 GHz, and then run a stress test. SetCPU has a stress test built in, and run it for 1 minute. If it's good, then bump it up to 1.8, 1.9, 2.0, etc. You'll hit a point where it'll just freeze up on you. Don't worry, you won't damage your cpu much, if at all. Just pull out the battery and retart. If it froze at 1.9GHz, then your stable clock should be at 1.8GHz. Run the stress test again at 1.8GHz for 5-10 minutes. If it doesn't freeze, you should be good to go.
If you really want to be more certain that it's stable, you should run the stress test for over an hour (when you overclock computers, they usually recommend that you run the stress test for 24 hours, and I've had the test fail at the 14th hour before), but for your phone 5-10 minutes should be fine.
Usually I lower it 100-200 MHz from my max stable clock speed for better stability and longer life for the cpu. If you play cpu-intensive games for hours at a time, then I would definitely lower the clock a bit. If you feel your phone getting too hot then I would lower it as well.
