Which tablet to buy?

Heya all,

I'm new here and was wondering if you guys could help. I am just looking at tablets to buy and I am a little overwhelmed by the ranges I have to choose from.

I ruled out ipad because it just doesn't seem to meet my needs so looking at Android tablets.

I originally started by thinking about buying a kindle for reading but decided it would be better to get rid of my netbook and buy a tablet. So looking for something to replace my netbook.

I need a tablet for:

Reading (Books/Manga/comics) (Something easy to hold for a long period of time without straining)
Watching movies (Anime/iplayer etc) (High dif)
Use for Skype
Games/Apps

Most tablets will let me do the above but because I want something to use when I'm travelling aboard e.g. like a netbook

Something with an expandable memory (Micro SD)
Something with a USB port (allows you to connect your camera etc to the tablet to load picture on to it)
I would like a pressure sensitive stylus (something like a wacom sketch/note taking/photo editing)
Something I could attach a keyboard to.
Something that possibly lets me change and edit microsoft word documents (Not sure if this is possible but this is just when I'm travelling or basic changes I have my main computer to do the rest).

From my research I looked into Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime. Which seems really good. And with the attachable keyboard it has the USB connection. I could even buy usb adaptor thingy to make a USB port if I don't want to carry the keyboard around with me. And it seems to have a great battery life.

But the problem is, it's a little too expensive for me. After selling my netbook/old computer I have around

The only tablet I know of that has a dock is one from the transformer series. Have you looked into seeing if you can find a used one perhaps?

Yup looked at some used ones and they seem to be going for high price too including the price of pressure sensitive stylus and I'm off my budget. Maybe I should wait for the price to drop. Not sure how long that will take.

Anyone know much about lenovo thinkpad? It comes with a stylus and I think you can get a keyboard but not sure if it has a USB port though. Not sure how it compares to the transformer

Probably because they are Windows monstrosities, for more detailed info check my thread "Writable tablets". I think that the drivers for those types of pens were already available ( Windows ) so that's why you see them there.

The Thinkpad has a keyboard/case from what I've seen ( online ) comes close to the Asus. I agree that the Asus would be perfect if it came with a digitizer.

Here is a warning. The way a digitizer generally works is that there is a signal sent between pen and writing surface. So you will not be able to buy a digitizer and have it work with a tablet unless the tablet is designed to work with a digitizer.

I think in the coming months many tablet makers, including Asus, will be adding digitizers to their tablets. I have no real knowledge that they will, but I think the biggest untapped market for tablets are those that want digitizers. Low hanging fruit--so to speak.

So if you are willing to wait a little you may find many more.

Sorry seemed to have missed your reply all together.

Yup I agree there isn't much out there with true digitisers functionality, which is really a shame. I think thats going to stop me from getting the transformer.

I hear samsung note tablet due to come out soon has a pressure sensitive digitiser with it which seems promising but then again it doesnt have the keyboard and usb connectivity. Looks like I'll have to wait around and see what comes out rather then spend all my saving on something that doesnt meet my needs.

In the mean time my contract for my mobile is running out....I'm debating weather I should just get the samsung note. The more I read about it the more I want it. Will be kind of in between a tablet and mobile. And meet my needs until I good tablet comes out that I'lll really want. Maybe windows tablets will meet the mark...with technology moving so fast you never knows whats coming next.

We have demo'ed a few units including 2 flavors of Thinkpad and Transformer slider, and Transformer with doc.

Transformer with doc- Doc is pretty cool but useless most of the time. I dont create any documents on the tablets so the dock made it too heavy. But the tablet it's self is snappy and has a fantastic screen. Wider than my ipad 2 and looks clear just like the ipad. The texture of the shell is so much better than the ipad making it easier to hold and manuver.

Transformer slider- A bit clunkier than the other one with doc. It looks to be close to the regular transformer except it's thicker and not very easy to hold while laying on the couch.

Thinkpad- Really good interface, I like Lenovo's navigation system. But this tablet is thick and clunky. The screen is not as bright and vibrant like the Asus.

Of the 4, Transformer, Slider, ipad2, Thinkpad, I think the Transformer is the best. Nice clear wide screen, textured body, Android navigation, Optional Dock for when you need to compose emails.

Went to see the transformer looks amazing. But still decided to just get the note for the time being. Will see when the new transformer comes out Or any other devices that are likely to come out soon.
