Anyway, I'm finally upgrading my dying Droid X to the Nexus - just put the order in, should be here Monday-ish. Looking forward to the ICS, the lack of Motoblur, and perhaps less shovelware.

Have some concerns about the radio, but it was time for the upgrade. Just here to learn. Don't know if I want to try rooting yet.

Yeah so just make sure you're absolutely happy with the device during your 14 day trial period. The radio issue is sporadic. It may not affect you, it may affect you only a little or you may want to throw it in a wood chipper on the reg like myself. Either way we're here for your help if you need any.

Depending where you are the radio might seem weak. I get about 1 less bar on my GNex than I did on my iPhone but the call quality seems better, probably because the ear speaker on the GNex is LOUD!!

My biggest complaint is with battery life. Coming from the iPhone I drain my battery under 10% daily where my iPhone would hardly dip under 50%. Will probably root soon and explore some options.

Glad to have you on board. Be careful with rooting, not because it's hard, but because having that much power over your device is addictive!

I was looking at the Maxx before this one, specifically for the battery. I've already ordered the extended version from Amazon, which should help a bit.

I guess I'll just have to wait and see if it works. I'd really like everything to click together nicely - I've been wanting vanilla Android for a while now, the resolution looks sweet, and I'm very excited about ICS.

That said, I'm more than a little worried the more I read about the radio, battery life, and random reboots. Because that sounds a lot like the X I'm ditching.

coming from the X is going to be a night and day difference. the screen is going to BLOW YOU AWAY, however the signal and battery life will leave a little to be desired.

my first bit of advice, dont pay attention to the signal bars....they WILL show lower than what the DX showed. its just how ICS displays them on 4.0.2.....4.0.4 updates how they are displayed to coincide with how other devices display signal bars.

and i would highly suggest Rooting and throwing on the 4.0.4 radios and a 4.0.4 ROM. it is super easy to do, it would take maybe 30 minutes once all the files are downloaded, and if you ever think you may do it in the future, do it on day one since unlocking the bootloader removes EVERYTHING on the phone...including the "SD card" data. so at the very least, if Rooting is even in the very back of your mind, i would unlock it on day one. its easy, and easily re-locked.

i had SOME issues with the phone in the first couple days...data drops mainly. so after reading, i unlocked and rooted (was going to do it anyway) and flashed the 4.0.4 radios and a ROM. and immediately held a 4g connection much better, and if it did switch to 3g, it was pretty much instant. I was happy.

and with a nexus, the great thing is, all these ROMs are SUPER stable. i haven't had a single random reboot since i threw on my first ROM. its amazing...especially coming from my DX, and thunderbolt which were not the best phone for running AOSP on.

First things first...

This is ICS. The first 3 days or so are going to be hell for you and your battery! A new OS that is different than you're used to and so cool that the phone won't leave your hand much! From admiring the great screen to watching YouTube vids in HD with LTE because it looks amazing, loads fast, and the new aspect ratio!

Then after that you'll notice, man this is pretty darn killer!

The phone or the dull battery? Both!

This (to me) is the best Android device right now. Hands down.

The battery is the only thing that should worry you. The radios are a problem to some, but it being unreasonable is a problem for few.

I had the MAXX and the battery is the only + to it. The screen in my eyes was so bad I returned it and found a GNex on Craigslist.

.... oh and don't get me started on rooting.

First of all - thank you to everyone who left a reply. The advice was very much appreciated. I only waited so long to respond because I couldn't remember which of the android forums I was on (hint: it's androidforums.com heh).

Anyway, I did get the phone yesterday - and it's just not for me. I can see why it's loved, but it's a little too temperamental for my taste. I kept getting screen "jumps and jitters", the reception at the house was HORRIBLE - not just the stated signal strength, but couldn't use it at all without turning on wifi - and using the Swype beta was causing sent messages to be broken up into 3-4 gibberish texts. The screen was beautiful, and was fast and sleek, and ICS was a joy to use - but it's too much of a PITA for my modest needs.

Anyway, I'm sending it back tomorrow and getting the Maxx after all - it's settling, but at least I'll be more familiar with what I'm getting into. I'll probably migrate over to those forums as well - but I did want to thank everyone again for all the help!

I was working with a guy last week who had a Maxx. He got better reception than I did on my Nexus. And he has better battery life of course.
In spite of those two things, there's no way I would trade him.

I hope the Maxx works out for you, but I think if you traded your Nexus in for another, you wouldn't have those problems.

My brother thunderbolt has better signal but my nexus has better speeds haha. Last night i hit 32.6 downlink and 16.1 Uplink, Never lose a 4g signal.

Yeah, quite often signal bar and data speed doesn't correlate the same way as the other phones. A lot of times nexus works data faster than low signal bar makes you think. So this is leading to perception of bad reception though there are some with legit signal drop issue.
