Tablet Question

I am a big android fan. I really like my droid phone and have zip problems with it. That said, I decided to surprise my wife with an android based tablet (running 2.2). This was my first tablet of any sort. We had it one day and had the screen freeze a half dozen times. Back to Amazon it went...

So, my question...

Do tablets normally have issues like screen freeze of is this an actual issue only with my specific tablet??

While this is known to happen in every computing device from time to time, do keep in mind that the kindle runs an OLD version of Android that is very heavily modified and was never intended to run on tablets. It is a bit laggy and has been known to have some input issues. Also on the hardware fron the tablet has relatively low specs. If I were you I would get a proper Android tablet and load the kindle app. I know it is more expensive, but the upcoming Asus Transformer 300 should be an excellent alternative, though it is 101".

for a 7" tablet, if you must have something right now, IMHO the Nook Tablet is better than the Fire, and it can be either run stock or hacked to run CM9.

Samsung also has the 7" Galaxy tab 2 for $250, which has similar specs to the Nook, but runs ICS (a bit modified b Samsung).

Personally, unless you have to have something right away, I would wait until summer for the release of the Google Nexus Tablet, which is supposed to run stock ICS and be 7" inches (it is being made by Asus as well, which makes the best Android tablets IMHO).

I am sorry, I was unclear...The screen freeze is on a le Pan 970...(now back to Amazon for credit)...I just did not want to replace it with another device if the problem is endemic on tablets.

And this is the very reason why Android gets a bad wrap. You have all these grey market and brown box retailers selling garbage with old Android versions and people think they are going to get an iPad experience. Android takes the blame, because surely the tablet can't be the problem, since it was paid for with hard earned cash.

Do yourself a favor. Buy a quality tablet.

+1 for buy a quality one, even if it's an iPad.

Your other comments reminded me when Netbooks first came out and they put linux on it. Lo and behold, the versions of linux they put on them was pure crap, none even came with a known brand linux but some in-house hacks.

Yeh, you do tend to get what you pay for with these things.

Cheapo tat from Shenzhen, from $60

The problem is really endemic with the cheapo crappy things of often unknown brands. e.g. "le Pan", "Won Hung Lo" or whatever. Not so with quality devices like Apple, Samsung, Lenovo, Asus and similar.

The 'off brand' is very well reviewed and costs between $400 and $200 depending on the device...Too often in the world of computers, the assumed quality associated with the name is unmerited. Have you ever tried to get HP to do anything that works through their customer service. The iPOD is a decades old technology and is sad compared to my Droid 3 for music and file manipulation. Many folk sell great gear or software but suck if anything goes wrong or worse, charge a fortune to fix stuff that should work to begin with.
