so this is my first android. frond had it loved it. just a few questions im sure have been askef thousands of times.

first it seems juice defender is the most popular battery saver? is this accurate? ive never had good luck with programs that are suppose to help battery life.

second my friend had an application that turned his mobile phone into an actual wifi hot spot so he could use his laptop with internet from the phone like a router.

third is what is all the post on routing? ive heard of ways to overclock it to speed it up is that different. is the a post anwhere that explains step by step how to speed up the phone?

i am very sorry for the newb post im new at this and really appretiate anyone who has the time to help me :)

Hello ccapital I would like to welcome you to these humble forums. Few pointers:

1. Juice defender really only works if you use your phone a lot, otherwise it won't make much difference.

2. You can turn your phone into a hotspot if it is rooted*

3. Rooting can be very scary, and daunting to some one with limited tech knowledge, in the end it is only useful if you know what it's for and the like. But yes there is a thread:
http://androidforums.com/optimus-v-...l-things-root-guide-updated-04-15-2012-a.html

4. Also check out the sub forum all things root at: Optimus V - All Things Root - Android Forums

5. Finally please spell check your post, and grammar check. It will make you seem more professional and less "newb" hope to see you post some more.

The best way to save your battery is to turn off everything and only turn it on when you need it. Turn down the screen brightness (you still have to see the screen so don't turn it down to low). Use this to keep your Auto sync from running all the time Periodic Auto Sync: GMail, etc
There are free widget apps that will allow you to turn on and off 3g, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, and screen brightness. This way you don't have to keep digging into the settings. Once installed just long press an empty part of a screen and set up the profile you want.

The problem with battery saving apps is they take up space, use up juice, and don't do anything that you can't do yourself. Unless you just have to have everything turned on?

Depending on what version of Android you have you may not be able to do this with the stock version of the ROM otherwise you will need to root your phone. Just remember that using you're phone as a portable hot spot will probably chew through you monthly data transfer rate rather quickly and you'll get throttled down by VM to very slow speeds.

Read through this forum Optimus V - All Things Root - Android Forums to learn about ways to overclock and speed it up. Again you'll have to root the phone before you can overclock it. But I found the best way to increase the performance of your phone is to install a custom ROM such as BACKside...turns the V into a totally new phone!

This is what I do. I've tried various battery saving apps, but for me, I just turn things off when I'm not using them. At home I rarely even have 3g data enabled, and only have WiFi on if I'm using an app that needs it or on the web or streaming something. My screen is just bright enough. For people who leave their data and wifi on all the time, battery saving apps may help a lot, but I didn't find they did anything for me that I couldn't do myself. Plus, I like the extra space they don't take up when I don't use them. :p

I don't have a use for the portable hotspot at this point, but for everything else I'd personally recommend going the root route. Bear in mind that will void the factory warranty on the phone, but for my money it's worth it. If you do decide to root your phone, before you begin look in About Phone - in the settings menu - Note your "baseband." You don't need to understand what that is, just look at the last number. It will be a 4,5, or 9. That will determine which methods of rooting will work for you, and will also help determine which of the custom ROM's will run best on your phone.
