Beware of storing your phone with battery left in?

Nowhere land..
I put the question mark up because I'm quite sure not all phones or batteries are like this.

I haven't used my droid x for awhile and left the battery in it and left the spare battery in the charger (Unplugged) for about a couple of weeks. To my dismay, BOTH batteries puffed up! I'm getting ready to sell my trusty ole droid x and had to buy two batteries from Amazon.

I did some research and turned up nothing, except one website (Which I now forget what site it was). They said that it could happen if a battery is left in an unused device.

I saw a thread here by Cadillac man and the same thing happened to his droid x batteries.

Is this an isolated thing?

Here's a link to the other thread I am referring to, this happened to this guy as well. http://androidforums.com/classifieds/508559-sale-110-obo-droidx.html

If you are not going to use the device for 7 days or longer it is recommended to remove battery from device . It is written in Phone manuals usually and recommended by Phone service personnel I have encountered .

I have left phones sitting for months and nothing like this has happened, but, after this incident I will heed that warning! :D

What got me was the stand alone charger and how it made the other battery puff up as well (Shruggs).

Makes me wonder how iphones and other such devices that have un removable batteries make it. :)

Just sitting around unplugged won't make then puff up, although it's not great for them either. But being on a constant power supply with no power being drained from it will do that, and I'll bet it would on an iPhone just as easily as on any other phone.

All I know is, I left the phone turned off and stored it away for a couple of weeks. Same thing with the stand alone charger that was not plugged in. I left my spare battery in it as well. Both stored away. Something happened. Now I keep the batteries out and in a plastic bag.

Previously? The phone was a daily driver and there were no signs of battery trouble. It happened to another member here. :)

My Droid 2 had set for about 2 years until I let someone borrow it.
My DX has been sitting since December, but I've used it twice.

The batteries are still in both, no issues.

Hmmm... Must be an isolated random thing then. I do drive my phones hard with data and what not. I rarely charged the batteries with the phone because I had the stand alone charger to charge the batteries. When one went dead, I just swapped em out. Truly wireless! lol :D

Thanx for letting me know your experience. :)

I didn't think you were crazy but just your batteries. Maybe it's an issue with the DX's batteries. Is your phone still under warranty? Have you contacted Motorola about this?

No,it went out of warranty in January. It's cool though, I got used batteries that are fine from amazon for 8 bucks. :) I'll be selling it dirt cheap soon, I don't use it anymore and I don't see the point in keeping it as a spare because I live in a 4g area. :)

I had the same thing happen with my Droid X. Got new phones last fall. I put the Droid X on my desk, unplugged, as it's on an extra line we got for my daughter but she isn't taking it with her yet. Didn't use it for a couple weeks and plugged it in and noticed that it looked like there was water under the screen, which I Googled and found out was due to swollen battery.

Sure enough, I could barely slide off the cover. I ordered a new battery on amazon, and it worked fine, but again I didn't use the phone for a while and within a few days of the battery draining and the phone turning off, I noticed the "wet spot" on the screen again, and the new battery is swollen.

That's a terrible design flaw in the batteries if you ask me, and from what I read in some places, a swollen battery means it could burst! It's not like I left the thing plugged in. It was just sitting for a few days (a couple weeks if you count the time it took to drain the battery in standby) with no use.

Exactly! My droid x and spare charger (Both unplugged) sat for about two weeks. When I went to do something with the phone, that's when I found both batteries swollen. :(
