Help Mail - Internal Storage

I have a Thunderbolt with what should be 2.4GB total of internal memory. I started getting the low memory message and now I cannot even install anything, even after deleting several old apps and moving some to the SD card.

After a little snooping in my phone i found that the mail client is taking up 2.12GB of data. I only have Gmail and an Exchange account on my phone. The gmail is a completely different app, so i know it's not the issue, which leaves the Exchange account in the HTC mail app. I deleted it too, with no change. My phone is basically a brick now and I cannot figure out how to free up that data. I've gone into my outlook and removed all old messages and archived the other stuff so I know i only have 17MB of email in my inbox.

I have no idea what to do....and i really don't want to factory reset it unless absolutely necessary.

Thanks to a post HERE I figured out that the phone was storing the massive amount of data in about 7 files in the mail application under this directory /data/data/com.htc.android.mail

I rooted my phone using the Revolutionary app without issue, and I am running the newest OTA (2.11.605.9) Look HERE for instructions.

Then I ran into the problem of not being able to install a file explorer app cause the phone was still acting stupid. So I used the instructions HERE which allowed me to make the device save all new programs to the SD card.

I installed Root Browser Lite from Google Play and was able to navigate to the folder, confirm the files were the issue and remove them. Now I have 2.3GB free and only 304MB used.

I've never heard of a mail client taking up that much space, but weird things have been known to happen with these phones. Also another good practice is to clear out the app caches under the applications tab in settings.

Now that you're rooted another good practice for power users is to boot into recovery and wipe just the cache partition and the dalvik cache every so often. Then reboot. It'll take a little longer to boot after wiping these caches because android has to rebuild the dalvik cache.
