Hi. My first time posting on the Android Forum. So yesterday my Mot Triumph overheated in my pocket, while it was idle. I quickly took it out of my pocket and noticed that screen was blank, but side lighting was on. I removed the battery and let it cool for ~1hr and tried to charge it. Charging seemed intermittent and when I turned on the device, I initially got the red Moto logo, but quickly faded away to a blank screen. Eventually I heard the "Virgin Mobile" sound with nothing on the screen. I know I can get it replaced from Virgin, but is there any way to retrieve data from the internal memory? The device was never rooted and pattern locked. Thanks in advance for any help.

Possibly, the only way to make a True Backup of our phones is thru Clockwork Mod Recovery, making whats called a Nandroid backup, this is going to sound alot harder than it actually is

im going to guess your planning on getting a replacment phone and u wanna just load it up like your old one in one shot

if your phone can get into download mode(booting while holding Power, Volume down) then you can go to the post in all things root and get the CWM Recovery Img file for our phones, following the directions on the page and installing it, you can make a nandroid backup which will save to ur sd card

then you keep that backup file, when ur new phone comes youll need to put cwm recovery on there as well and then load the backup you saved from the other phone

Also after you make your backup on ur OLD phone, you could then pull the backup off the phone and to ur pc with a sd card reader, and take the CWM recovery img off and put the stock recovery img back

Now youll have a backup of ur broken phone saved to ur pc, and ur broken phone will be completly stock, so no fear if u need to send it in

***look here, your phone has saftey features to stop over heating, altho certain apps running can cause the phones todo wierd things, imma guess if ur phone was just staying on in ur pocket all day u got a rouge app stopping Sleep mode, so once you get ur replacement phone and ur backup loaded up nice, ur gonna wanna one by one remove any apps you've installed and used till you see it works fine again

If you can't get the phone to boot (at least into recovery or download mode), you won't be able save the stuff from your phones internal memory. You can copy all the data from the micro sd card though.

yea, i was hoping for him, since he says it loads the splash and he can hear the startup sounds, that thats hopefully going far enough, that if he were to put CWM recovery on he could possibly boot right into there

Thanks for the quick reply. Can I do this even without being able to see the screen (since it's just blank) and pattern locked? Also can I wipe the memory somehow since I want to wipe it clean before sending in the device?

It's odd that this happened since it was behaving fairly well for past 6 months, other than usual low signal/battery complaints.

Thanks again.

well you said that you can actually see your splash correct?
so your picture is working
and you can hear the boot up sounds, so its getting to the boot area

CWM recovery boots right after the splash screen, and before the phone gets to boot area, so i was hoping it would be possibly for you to get into CWM Recovery mode

**If you not getting any Images now do not try this, if all picture is gone now, then your only real option would be to start fresh with the new phone, altho your gmail account should hold what apps youve ever downloaded and your contacts list, as long as you've synced it

I get the initial red Moto logo screen, but goes blank from there on. Only thing I see is side-lit black screen afterwards so I think the GPU is shot somehow. I want to try to recover the data, but ultimately more interested in wiping my private data before sending it in. Thanks.

Update: I was able to go into download mode and replace with the CWM recovery.img, but when I try to boot into CWM by holding power + both vol buttons, screen just goes blank and nothing happens. It may have booted into CWM, but just not shown on the screen. :hmmmm:

Its still going thru/ past the moto logo right, hold the power, volume up, volume down simultainiously and just remain holding it, if you can't actually see a screen when it gets there id say there's probly nothing you can do,you thru download mode again can put. the original stock image back on, removing ur cwm one making the phone stock, if ur sending the phone in

I've seen a few strange cases of triumph troubles on here, I would say this is another lol cause for u to see the splash screen the picture is working, but not seeing anything else=strange lol

Would you happen to know what line option the backup is? I was thinking about just using the down vol key to try to blindly choose the backup option onto the SD card? Thanks.

I wouldn't suggest this but if u want to, and as long as its cwm recovery 5.0.2.6 I believe it'll be
1. Hold at the sametime power, volume up and volume down count to 12 while holding them, then release
2. Press volume down 5 times
3. Press menu
4.press menu
It should be backing up, takes a few minutes, ill say 5 min cause ur blind

Now after the 5 min, this is where I'm not sure, since you can't see you can't navigate out so I guess maybe a battery pull( someone else may know)

If it worked on the SD card you'll have a clockworkmod folder with a backup folder inside

Cool! Will try this as soon as I find a spare card. Thanks for all your help and will update.

yea, without sight i dont think your gonna be able to get it, putting ur stock recovery img will take the CWM recovery off making it stock again and you can send it in for a replacement is all im comin up with, some else may have an idea

It connects to a computer and stays on with download mode? Might be able to copy stuff in Linux, but I am not sure what exactly.

Other than that, I would say you are out of luck. :(

Yeah, only thing that shows up is the red moto logo and text during download mode. :hmmmm: I'm actually leaning towards not even replacing it since I don't want to send it with my personal data on it. At least it only cost me $130 for the phone. I may just wait for HTC V or Evo.

Well, from what I know....

The first thing a lot of places do when receiving defective units is wipe the device and flash it with everything completely stock. So it isn't likely that any of your info will get left on it.

That being said, I do not know VM/Moto's exact procedure with this device so I can't guarantee you anything.

I think you can get it backed up and wiped as long as CWM recovery is actually installed. So what you should do is:

First make sure you have 2-3gb of free space on your sdcard to be on the safe side.

1. go into download mode and put the CWMR on (just to be sure)
2. battery pull and make sure no cords are connected to it and leave the battery out for a good 30 secs.
3. put the battery in
4. Hold volume + and volume -, now while holding them push the power button until it vibrates. (if it doesn't vibrate go back to step 2)
5. wait like 30 secs to a min (just to make sure you are booted into recovery)
6. volume - 5 times
7. menu 2 times
8. wait like 10-20 mins (just to be sure... it can take a while)
9. battery pull
10. check sdcard for clockworkmod/backups

If that works let me know and then we can wipe your phone
