Hi, I am running aokp build 32 with the kernel it came with and was wondering if I can get some recommendations for a kernel to flash. Im not really looking for performance enhancements but they are definitely welcome but I rarely see any lag at all on my nexus. What I really need is one that would give me a little better battery life. Also, do i need to wipe anything before flashing? Thanks in advance!

Every phone is different, and by miles it seems. Since this just dropped and there hasn't been much time to really see how it performs my suggestion would be to stick to the kernel that it comes with (Faux's 14mainline). It is very solid in all dept's. Change the governor to ondemand in the performance settings in RomControl and check "set on boot." Give it a whirl and if you're hungry for more then flash something new like FrancoM2 or Lean 3.2.2. Honestly, I've run them all extensively and the differences between them in day to day NORMAL usage are infinitesimal (love that word btw :p). However, your phone as well as you personally will take a liking to the one you have the best experience with so it's time to start playin fella! Give them each 2-3 preferably 3 days to thoroughly test on your phone. Wipe dalvik cache before each kernel flash.

Had to google infinitesimal hahahahahaha. Well thanks for the quick reply. I can pretty much get a full day with my battery so it seems flashing a new kernel wont really benefit me in my case. And what does changing the governor to ondemand do? Thanks again!

lol!

Faux has worked on and tweaked the ondemand governor in his kernel, the kernel you are presently on. He personally uses it so that was good enough for me. But seriously, with my usage it gave a touch better battery life than interactive. Interactive is a touch more responsive though. A lot of people who use his kernel also underclock their cpu to 1060MHz (default is 1200MHz) including Faux himself. It will squeak out a little more battery juice as well as keeping it nice and cool. I use the 1200MHz as I found the difference to be minuscule or infinitesimal :p

I recommend the same settings on Faux's kernel as JB did (mainly because he suggested them to me :D ). However I'm rocking Faux's 15m rather than the 14m that comes with AOKP. I highly recommend it. My battery life has been outstanding and I haven't experienced any lag.

In case your interested, I get approximately 11 hours of battery (stock battery) with, on average, about 3-3 and a half hours screen on time and all accounts and weather syncing every hour.

Like mentioned earlier, kernels react different to each individual phone, not just the model. So if Lean's latest doesn't work too well for you, I recommend Faux's 15m, since the same rule applies between kernel versions. I remember when I was on Lean for the longest time, I always stayed on 1.2.1, despite 1.6+ being out :D . The quest for the Holy Kernel is no joke! :D
