Root Flashing questions

I got my E4GT a couple weeks ago. It is an EL29. I'm not really sure what that means, I guess that's the Gingerbread version or something?? If so, how is that different from my Android version which is 2.3.6?
I've previously flashed roms on a couple of other phones (Hero, Nexus S 4G) and I didn't really know what I was doing but I flashed the roms and they worked and I was happy.
I've been doing tons of reading before I do anything to my E4GT (already rooted it though). From what I've read, I can flash a rom, a kernal, and a modem. I don't quite get what it means to flash a kernal or a modem or why I would want to do that.
So let's say I want to try the Blazer rom. How do I know whether I should flash a new kernal or modem, and which ones should I choose?

If you're gonna run Blazer Rom...You don't have to do anything...Itll run fine just the way it is...It will come flashed with Stock kernel and EL29 Modem...The rom is very stable...battery life is great...and the EL29 Modem is excellent...Just flash it and you're good to go...
I think it has an ICS theme but you can flash any theme you want if you don't like it...

BTW 2.3.6 is the GB version of Android the newest version is 4.0.3...Which is ICS...

So you're saying when I flash that rom it includes the kernal and modem and whatever I had on my phone gets overwritten. Is this true with all roms? I'm still trying to figure out when I would ever need to flash just a kernal or just a modem...

Yes you will overwrite everything with Rom change...Do a Nandroid Backup first and install Titanium Backup to backup all App and Data changes if you want...Youll be always be able to go back...

You can always just flash a modem or kernel for a change if you think the rom isn't running up to your expectation...Steady has some nice custom fast kernels to overclock on XDA...modem changes are for gps and connectivity problems sum work or run better than others...location has to do with that sumtimes after rom change update PRL and profile...that usually helps...Im sure you'll be more than happy with the Blazer Rom...A lot of people are running ICS Roms now...They are quite nice as well...;)

the rom will include the rom itself and a kernel but not the modem. and yes that is the case with all custom roms but not the case if you flash a "stock rom", be it true stock or a leaked version via odin. i will quickly explain what a rom, kernel and modem is and what they affect. a rom is your operating system of your phone, kinda like what windows 7 is for a pc. what it has in it will vary from dev to dev and can be themed by them or you can theme it yourself depending on certain aspects of the rom itself. a kernel is the software that ties in your operating system (rom) and your hardware. it sometimes can be over/under clocked depending on the kernel. it also contains our recovery, be it stock or cwm. modem controls all your radios. phone, internet, wifi etc..
will you ever need to flash a modem or kernel you asked, well that depends on a lot of variables to be honest like is it suggested by the dev, etc..
hope this helps some.

Well I had my E4GT (EL29) for a couple of weeks before flashing a new ROM and it worked flawlessly. Four days ago I flashed the Blazers ROM and immediatley I started having speaker and call problems. My ringtones and notifications sound weak and scratchy sometimes, and other times sound normal. When I call people or they call me, they can barely hear me and the call quality is horrible. When I try to play music sometimes there is no volume, like its muted.
Rebooting the phone doesn't fix it. I don't know what is causing this but I guess I will go back to stock ROM and see if that fixes the problems...

Well that is a by product of ics for some unfortunately. You could try volume + from the market and see if that helps it some. I know a few devs are including that in their roms as a fix.

Blazers ROM is ICS? I thought it was GB EL29. So you're saying this is a known problem? Where can I read more about this.

Just for fun last night I flashed Calkulins E4GT 2 v1.4 ICS ROM and it was the same thing. Crappy speaker sound (sometimes totally mute) and horrible call quality.

I'm going to go ahead and unroot and go back to stock and see if that fixes it.

Sorry, overlooked that about blazer. It is a known issue with ics roms though. Try volume + and see if it helps before going back to stock.
