What do you use the big screens for?

Hello,

Lately phones started coming out with very large screens (4" and above) - how are you taking advantage of that?
Web browsing? Games? Movies? (maybe another not so obvious usage?)

And what do you think the screen cant help with? I'm guessing texting, calling and emailing can be done just fine with a 3" screen.

I'm just wondering if its worth it, taking into account that phones are getting heavier, bulkier, and use more battery.

I was afraid of the screen size when I went from the Droid 2 to my GNex. After using it for a few weeks I grabbed the D2 and couldn't for the life of me figure out how I lived with such a tiny screen. It isn't just the size however, the clarity is much, much better as well.

3inch screen vs 4inch or larger:

1. Larger keys. Basically, the touch points are larger on the larger screens are are thus more accurate and able to type faster. You can also see more of the previous message in the SMS app. This the biggest advantage of a large screen. Honestly I don't think I'd like anything smaller than a 3.7inch now.

2. Reading. You can see more of what you read in a bigger font.

3. Web browsing, movies, picture viewing and such are better on larger and higher resolution screen of course.

4. Playing games is also easier.

Comparing the screen size of my ipod to razr Maxx, I can say the small 3.5 inch screen is too small for comfort and accurate typing.

Ipod screen felt cramped in my hand and I had to constantly put it down to stretch my hand. Typing was a mess. My accuracy was so bad, auto correct couldn't even fix half of my words.

With this 4.3 inch screen, I'm having no problems with comfort in my hand or typing.

Bigger screen makes for a more enjoyable gaming, movie, typing, and web browsing experience. Reading is the number one advantage. I can have more text on the screen, larger, and hold the phone gather away from my face.

I can't seer myself using anything under 4 inches. Any bigger than about 4.7 and I will have to stretch my hand and fingers to much. I think 4.7 is perfect.

I have large hands & fingers so the larger screen really makes typing easier for me. Besides that the larger display makes for better reading, web browsing, movies, & games. It's just nicer to have more real estate (so to speak) while using your device.

The general rule I've found to be true is that the perfect phone size is the device you can hold in one hand and reach the opposing edge of your phone with your thumb. My female friends seem to like the 3.7"-4" the best and my male friends like the 4.3"-4.6" and beyond.

Again, display size is one of those subjective things. If you like the giant 10" displays on the tablets then go for it! That's why Android is so great! Because we're in control and we get to choose what we like on a personal level.

Battery life can always be improved by an assortment of things, but having that large crisp display is something you can only get by purchasing the right device for you.

I used to have the droid 2, but switched for a droid x because I hated the slide out keyboard I never used. I got the bigger screen phone for the bigger virtual keyboard to help reduce typos.

I guess it depends on how much you type with your phone. I write full articles for my blogs on my phone sometimes and a bigger screen with bigger keys on the virtual keyboard is a God send.

I have the galaxy note and I can not see myself having another phone in the future that's smaller.

Viewing full websites is a joy, instead of mobile versions. Keyboard much bigger so less mistakes etc.

Large screen is nice, but it comes at the expense of a larger size of the phone itself. I like the form-factor of the Nexus One - pretty compact, fits nicely in a pocket. But the screen, well, could be bigger.
Now I'm playing with Galaxy Nexus. The screen is gorgeous. In landscape you can browse the normal desktop versions of the sites! But you can really feel this device in a pocket.
So, now I'm torn between these two sides - want a big screen, but a small form-factor.
Hmm... It reminds me... Wasn't it always like this with PDAs?

I have the Note and I can honestly say that you soon get used to the screen size and any other display that I come across, I think is too small. You soon adapt to the extra size and find yourself with a routine that accomodates the phone.

Well, I believe you. Even after just a couple weeks with 4.3" screen on Sensation returning back to Nexus S with 4" was quite noticeable for me. And I just cannot do anything on my daughter's iPod with its tiny 3.5" screen.
But I am still looking for a suitable way to keep the phone with me. When I have a jacket, I put the phone in a pocket there. My shorts usually have many pockets, so also good enough. But when I wear jeans and a shirt, it becomes a problem. I can always feel the phone in the jeans pocket, and when sitting always need to adjust its position to be a bit more comfortable. So I am not sure how even Galaxy Nexus could fit (I actually tried - it didn't). And I guess I would need a separate bag if I bought Samsung Note.

I looked at the note in an AT&T store. Yes it's a great device with a big beautiful screen, but I have to ask, how do you carry it daily? Are you a suit and tie guy and carry it in your jacket? Do you just hand carry it and it stays on your desk all day? What about weekends? Thanks.


As for the OP, I still love my 4.3" Droid X screen. When I 1st upgraded from the 3.2" Droid Eris screen, I knew bigger was better. Much easier to read, select links while browsing, etc.

If I go out to dinner, I treat it as another guest. The phone gets it's own seat.

Some days I'm a suit and tie guy and I have the phone in a leather flip case which also has space for a few debit/credit cars and some cash so it's cut out my need to carry a wallet too. I also just carry it in my hand. Living in London I don't really put anything in my pocket anyway because of pick pocketers.

Regular days/chilling at home, I just put it in a gel case. Even though I don't, when it's in its case it can fit in my pockets of jeans and Chinos easily. Skinnyjeans wearers may have a problem though lol.

I handled a one x yesterday and the size of the screen felt small compared to my note.

I hope in the future Samsung release a note 2 or something similar with the same size screen. No way can I go back to a smaller screen now.

Its really a "once you go _____ you'll never go back" kinda thing.

Its hard to understand why looking from the outside, so I completely understand this thread, but once you've had a larger screen, you'll never settle for less than.
