Root To Root, or not to Root...

That is the question.

I am trying to understand better what the advantages/disadvantages are to rooting my Le Pan 970.

I have version 4626 running.

I have the files to upgrade to the leaked version, 4749 but don't know if I should do that before or after rooting.

I want to upgrade to gingerbread. Do I have to root to do that?

Currently I have the original 2g sd card but am planning to swap out to a 32g card. Would that affect the order of upgrading and rooting?

Thanks!

Check out the forums at LePanLife.com, they have step by step instructions for both rooting and installing Gingerbread.

Root before the upgrade so you can do a full backup with Titanium Backup, you might have to root again after the update but it's not a big deal.

If you're going to flash Gingerbread you technically don't need the upgrade as it will just replace it anyway, and you do need to be rooted for Gingerbread. Mine is rooted and running CM7, love it!

Swapping cards doesn't affect either, just make sure you save any backups saved to the old one.

Well...
The moral of this story is, perhaps, "Not to Root..."

I rooted it and then powered off as per instructions, and powered on and now I have a soft brick.

Opens to the black screen with the Le Pan logo in white.

And that's it baby.

So, clearly many have had successful experiences: but not I.

I am waiting, over on the development page that has the rooting instructions and files, for a response to my request for help, but so far everyone has been mum. Which is making me think they don't know what happened either...

Man, am I sad....
