Moving data from 1 memcard to another

Hello,
I bought a Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo V in february. It had roughly 300MB free space, and bundled with a 2GB Memory stick.
Now I'd like to swap in an 8GB stick. (I'm down to 40MB available totally, phone+card)
How do I do so without losing my Apps, Settings, Photos etc.
Can I just put the new card in, hit format, then connect both to a PC via card readers and copy paste?

That method will work. If you don't have a media card reader, you can just copy all the files to the computer, put in the new memory card, and copy all the files back.

Make sure you have enabled seeing hidden folders. That worked for me. Although unlike you, all my apps and data aren't on the memory card so I don't know how they'll be affected.

This is what I do. I do this routinely so I always have a backup of the SD card in case it goes bad.

I always format new SD card on PC and had never a problems with this cards

first the good news, it worked... for those that might stumble upon this in the future, i simply copied all folders (including hidden) to my pc, formatted the new card in the pc itself (since the option was dimmed out when i inserted it into the phone) and pasted the files onto the new card...
tested, all apps running, settings and data intact...

now to my new problem...
the phone had 34MB free when i started... and i'd been unable to download updates or new apps for a couple days now... infact, it wouldn't even allow me to run gtalk.
so i went down the list of applications, hoping to move everything to sd card...
i was only able to move a couple odd apps... games no doubt... all 2 that i have installed... a mileage tracker, and gps car locator than i've downloaded... and that's it... all in all, i cleared out 16MB... i still have low memory indicator... there isn't a single app i can now move to sd...
any solution?

angry birds for instance went from 26MB to 6MB... skype from 20MB to 1MB
i'm so baffled by this, dunno if it's misreading, or it dumped files, i refuse to believe temporary and log folders comprised the bulk of these apps.

What you are seeing is the amount of data still residing in Internal memory. The app was taking up 26MB of your Internal memory, now it's only using 6MB, the rest is now on your SD card.

i was under the impression i can download indefinitely as long as my memcard has space.

Some use Internal and some use the SD. It all depends on how the app was written.

No. I've seen some large apps automatically move itself to the SD during the install. If it doesn't you have to move it manually. You can install App2SD. This app will detect if an app can be moved to the SD and ask if you want to move it.

No, this is not the case. You can download as long as you have enough internal memory. Apps are only one thing that uses internal memory. SMS, MMS, email, app cache all use internal memory,

I have been thinking the same thing - using a few SD cards as backups for my Galaxy Note.

You’d better have a backup of the SD card in case it goes bad. You may try some management tool. And the manangement of your contact will easier.
