Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 Storage

Hi, I just bought my first tablet EVER !!!!! I got the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 on Sunday from Best Buy. I've been playing with it and was trying to load a movie on it and saw that I didn't have enought space.

It says 8GB, but when I look at available storage it says 4.59GB. I called Samsung and they said the other 3+GB are taken up by the OS and some room to restore it. Does that sound right? Is this normal to take up so much space?

As it is, most movies are 4+GB so I can even hold one movie on it. I guess I'll have to put them on a SDHC card. BTW I'm using .MP4 for my movie format.

Yep, perfectly normal. Same on almost all devices, even PC's and Macs. iPods and iPads.

I just ordered one of these for my Galaxy Tab 2, even though I won't be getting the Tab until some time in June:

That should hold more than enough.

I have a 32G SDHC card in my GT27.0 but don't know if it's an ICS issue or a hardware issue but the OS doesn't allow moving apps to the SD card so it can only be used as data storage. I have music and video stored there and can access that content fine but can't move apps to the card.

Same problem... Bought galaxy tab 2 7" with 32G SD card... but cant move the apps to the SD card... Is that ICS issue?

Also, this is actually for the Galaxy Tab 1 and not the 2 so it may be a limitation of ICS.

even though it says 8gigs, after samsung loads their bloatware it's more like 4 gigs at best. i have downloaded one full length movie and 5 CDs. i'm waiting on a 32gig memory card i ordered from amazon

The issue is that the Move to SD Card option is NOT avaialable.

i've read that it's an "oversight" and not a limitation in ICS.... i would hope so, since it just wouldn't make any sense...

Yes it comes from the factory with ICS.

ICS does not allow moving apps to external storage. Some, but not all apps will allow you to specify where its' data is to be stored. Will be much better once some of the older apps are 'upgraded' for ICS.

I assume you formatted the card when you first installed it. Kies is kind of flakey. Works best for me via usb with wifi on the Tab turned off. Also do you have Kies on your computer? If you don't, download it and use the computer version and not the app on the tab. If all fails, use a SD adaptor and insert into computer and transfer the movie to the media directory. It's too bad the app droid air doesn't work with the Tab. Great free app that I use to transfer files from my computer to my Maxx without a problem. A big negative on the Tab. ICS is not all it's cracked up to be. A pain if you have an SD card.

i have a mac, so not sure if i can insert the the SD adaptor. i do have kies on my computer but it will never open up. in the past on my skyrocket, i would just open kies on my phone and type in url into my mac. i was able to download 2 movies onto my phone that way.

on my tab 2 7.0 i attempted to manually move 2 kindle books to the external SD but could not find the files. called samsung and the first line of tech support could not help. went through my files etc and nowhere to be found. but when i open the kindle app, the 2 books were there and able to be opened. they scheduled me for a call back with the next level of tech support.

I wasn't sure if you had an sd adaptor slot on your mac. I have one on my iMac, which works great. Also I purchased WiFi File Explorer PRO from the app store which allows me to do it through wifi on my iMac. Great little program and can transfer everything to my sd card or into the phone directores.

i have an old macbook (it will be 5 years old next month). i'll wait for the samsung tech to call and see if i can find and move my kindle files to my SD card and give kies air one more try. i just looked up wifi file explorer pro. great reviews from both customers and tech publications. i'll give it a try if kies does not work. again, thanks so much for your help.

Cant help but notice the file size of your films. Most of my 2 hr films are about 1.5Gb once ripped (use Pavtube).
