Root [Guide] How to make a bootable CWM (ClockWorkMod) or TWRP bootable sd card (06-04-2013)

Hey, I've read over your forum as many times as I can with out murdering someone, I have 5 Sd cards ranging from 128mb to 8gb and I've used everyone and flashed dozens of twrps and cwm onto them using both win32 and winimg I used 7zip to unzip them and they always successfully flash but when I put it in my nook and power it on it just boots up it never starts loading anything It doesn't do anything, I'm on 1.4.1 and then I updated to 1.4.2 I tried switching to a mac (been using w7) and it wouldn't flash the img to the sd so I gave up after 30 tries or so, I'm frustrated and lost, I've honestly tried everything I can think of, I just want a custom rom on my nook if anyone can see what I'm so obviously missing or needs more info to help me feel free to ask!

thanks in advance, I'm sorry for being aggrevated but I've rooted dozens of devices and I've only had this many problems with one other one (and I sold it after I fixed it)

If you plug your sdcard into your computer and see 4 files on it, you probably flashed it ok.

Are you on a Nook Touch? This doesn't work with the Touch.

It says nook color everywhere, but honestly I'm not sure how do I double check? and it does have the 4 items the uimage and uramdisk are there if I understand correctly that's what I need. Any more idea's or am I just a lost cause?

Thanks by the way, I really appreciate you taking the time to hold my hand and walk me through all this, it isn't what you want to do all day I'm sure, but I very much appreciate you doing it! and does it matter what class sd card it is? B&N suggest a 6 or higher, I know one of mine is a four, but I'm not sure on the rest

I tried imaging the 16gb_clockwork-3.2.0.1.rar onto a 16GB Sandisk Class4 card using Win32 Disk Imager (Run As Admin).

It kept telling me the card wasn't big enough.
When I view the properties of the image, it shows 14.9GB, or 16,006,394,880 bytes
When I view the properties of the card (even after reformatting it twice) it shows 14.8GB, or 15,915,974,656 bytes

So right now I'm using the 4GB image...
That shouldn't affect how this all gets onto the Nook Color, should it? The rom will go where it needs, and I can eventually use a blank 16GB card for extra storage?

... or you could use a 8 gb image. :D

No, it doesn't make a difference but you end up with a 4 gb card, not a 16 any more.

I like to use a 2 or 4 gb card and dedicate it to a recovery card and leave 8 gb or larger cards as data cards. Once you have data on it you don't want to lose your backups and use it as a recovery disk.

Bit of a newb question ; just got nook color software version 1.3 and i want to flash to cm7.

Can i use 16gb_clockwork-3.0.2.8.img? or should I use 16gb_clockwork-3.2.0.1? I'm concerned the 1.3 vers may be prevented from flashing since all the tutorials i read use 1.2.

thanks

oh oh..i should read better lol

"bootable cwm (3.0.2.8) sd card image (does not work with B&N 1.2 or greater partitions unless updated to 3.2.0.1)"

It's all done the same way, just use the cm9 file and the gapps. The technique is the same as cm7. If you're rooted, you can use the Rom Manager method after downloading with gooManager, much easier.

I'm going to wait a few weeks before updating my wife's NC. I don't think they're as good as the one I have installed on my HP Touchpad. The screen lagged the last time I tried it.

What are you running now, stock, rooted, cm7? (Makes a big difference.) :D

I updated the TWRP images to the latest version 2.1.1 and updated the guide.

Let me know if there's a problem. Sorry, no NC here to test them.

You can also update your current CWM 3.2.0.1 or TWRP bootable sdcard by downloading a zip file and copying two files to your card... much easier than reflashing it and it doesn't erase or wipe your card. :D

The only reason for a bootable sdcard is to install a rom on your NC or to repair it should it become unbootable. You'll want to use your 32 gb sdcard AFTER you have a rom on it.

I recommend picking up a cheap 2gb card just for this purpose and setting it aside when finished and to use your 32 gb for data.

OTOH, you can use any of them for the 32 gb card, but you'll need to remove the partition from it after to use it for data. If you flash a 2 gb image on your sdcard, you'll end up with a 2 gb card until you remove it.

I just purchased my Nook Color with the sole purpose of rooting it. I bought the 8g with a 32 g SD to maximize the storage.

The images for CWM 3.0.0.5 only seem to go up to 16? SHould I use that? OR what do you suggest?
Your statement "I bought the 8g" makes me wonder if you bought a Nook Color or a Nook Tablet? The Tablet comes with either 8GB or 16 GB. The Nook Color has only one hardware configuration.

If you have a NT, you might want to check out the NT forums:

I am really sorry I am just so confused .do you have any idea why the touchscreen would be unresponsive?I have scoured everything I could read and could not find that similar problem.Am I missing anything else. I
Does it need to be plugged into the computer. do I mount from there?I just feel like I am so close. I dont want to mess up the card because it is the only one I have and with my laptop being broken I cant take a chance. Any sugesstions would be awesome.

If you copied the files to your sdcard and it works on your NC (using buttons now instead of the touchscreen), but not on the new NC, the problem isn't you.

The only thing I can think of is it's because of a system update on the new one (or it's a Nook Tablet). B&N can't be fond of people hacking their tablets and not buying stuff on their Market.

FWIW, the Nook Tablet will have a microphone hole on the top, opposite of the headphone jack and be a darker color than yours.

Your laptop is STILL broken? :D

yes my laptop is still broken and it is driving me crazy! As soon as we get our new car I will get a new laptop. You know who the hell knows. her software version is 1.3.0.Its just crazy!I never could get the other coppied over to the sd card. Will you please dumb down to my level and explain one more time how to change twrp can I just add to it? I love using it. Can we have both?

To have both, you'd need another sdcard.

B&N 1.30 should work just fine. I don't know why it wasn't updated to 1.4.2 yet tho, unless it was rooted.

Is this NC rooted? If Yes... Does it have Rom Manager or Play Store on it so you could install RM and update it that way.

You just open the zip file with WinRar (or whatever) and extract the files to the sdcard. It'll ask if you want to overwrite the files and if you click "yes", you'll have to replace the files later.
