[Verizon] Question about flashing kernels and radios

So we flash them both the same way, in recovery? No more hboot flashing?

Still wipe cache and dalvik? Whether flashing the kernel or the radio?

Hey, one other thing. Do I need to unmount the phone from my pc before unplugging? Because it seems that in several modes(like when usb debugging is enabled) there doesn't appear to be an option on the pc or the phone to unmount the phone's storage from the pc. Really wondering about this. I use Windows XP.

When flashing a radio there is no need to wipe anything.

When flashing a kernel, I personally like to wipe cache and dalvik cache, even though Imoseyon, maker of LeanKernel, my kernel of choice, never does. Your mileage may vary.

Lastly, any time I transfer downloaded files from PC to phone, no matter the OS, I properly disconnect my phone, then flash.

I have Windows 7, and the only thing I do is close the file explorer window. I have never had a problem. I haven't seen a way to unmount it either. Just close the window & unplug.

One other thing, at least for this newbie. I learned that you don't rename the kernel file to update.zip. Just install it as is.

How, exactly, do you do this? Because, as oxfat said above me, I can't find an option to disconnect.

The flash method for radios depends. If they are packaged into a flashable zip, recovery is the answer. If its just an img file, fastboot flash in the bootloader. Hboot on HTC phones is slightly different in that it will scan the SD card for a specific filename and can be used to flash radios, other hboot versions, or full system images (rom.zip aka ruu in flashable form).

I believe some of these toolkits (wug's etc) have provisions for it but the down and dirty way is to install the android sdk onto your PC, then interface the phone with the PC via USB cable. While on the bootloader screen and with the desired img file in the platform tools folder of the sdk, you run a fastboot command from a command prompt on the PC which then flashes it to your phone. There are instructs in the stickies of the gnex root forums to help with the particulars.
