well with kernels it will always be YRMV. so you will need to try some kernels out and see which ones fits your phone better. basically what works for you may not work for me. also give the kernel a few days to settle in before making the leap to another kernel. also always make nandroid backups as well.
make sure that the kernel matches with the type of rom you are on. the stock rom is sense and most likely gingerbread so you will need the gingerbread sense kernels. froyo sense kernels will not work on a gingerbread sense roms. and there are aosp kernels which is for aosp roms.
a lot of people like anthrax, but for me the freedom kernels seems to do well for me (try the aggressive version).
They will work, but front facing camera will be upside down because HTC never released the latest source code for the 2.3.5 kernel. If you never use that (I don't), then don't worry about it and go ahead and use it.
