Root Wireless Tether in Infrastructure Mode

It's strange that others are having issues with wifi tether. I've never had any issues with getting it to work on my Prevail. As long as I set it to the Indulge and softap (master) its worked fine. I wonder if something changed when they built the newer phones since mine is one of the first ones. Hmmm
I got my Prevail in September, I think. 6 or so months after release.

I have had no issues using it to tether with laptops and PCs before, it was only when trying to get an Android device on it, that trouble ensued. Prior to this tablet purchase, I created an ad-hoc network with the app barnacle for my tethering needs.

I too was banging my head until I read this thread and finally the post by 82iNqcQP (thank you). I too had to change the DNS settings within the app, wifi tether. Now, my Transformer can connect to my phone's wifi signal and surf the web. Sweeeeet!

Here's what I did: (to clarify and sum it all up for any who may be helped...)

With a rooted Samsung Galaxy Prevail,

  • On PC (or phone), Download android-wifi-tether from here (direct link) and copy it to your SD card (if on PC).
  • On phone, open File Manager, locate the file you downloaded (Download folder or somewhere on SD card) and install it.
  • Go to Play Store (Google Market) and search for "abd terminal emulator" app and get one. I used the free one listed first.
  • Open the abd emulator and you get a command prompt.
  • Type:
  • get dns
  • Within the text, you should see the Boost Mobile DNS servers #s you'll need. There are a few, The ones you want are paired together and look like mine below. Write them down and exit the app.
  • Mine are:
  • 66.1.0.132
  • 66.1.0.133 (Yours should look similar)
  • Open the wifi tether app, open settings,
  • Open "Device-Profile"
  • set to Samsung Galaxy Indulge
  • Open "Setup-Method"
  • set to Softap for Samsung (master)
  • Open "Change preferred DNS"
  • set to ...1st # string you wrote down (mine was 66.1.0.132)
  • Open "Change alternate DNS"
  • set to ...2nd # string you wrote down (mine was 66.1.0.133)

Tether should now work for tablets. Set up encryption within app.

To Prevent wifi from turning off at phone sleep...:
  • Press Menu hard-key (enter phone settings)
  • open "Settings"
  • Open "Wireless & Networks"
  • Open "Wi-Fi Settings"
  • Press Menu hard-key
  • Open "Advanced"
  • Open "WiFi Sleep policy"
  • set to Never
After changing those settings, the tether works for everything. Android tablet, laptop, desktop... In fact, I'm posting from my desktop connected through my cell-tether now. :D
Ok does this only work for tablets? Because I'm not trying to connect my tablet, I dont even own one. Im trying to send out a infrastracture signal through my tether to connect to my video game systems, but it only sends out ad-hoc signals.. I was succesful in actually sending out a infrastracture signal when I used the wifi tether beta and used the following settings: Changing the device profile to "Samsung Galaxy S2" then changing the setup method to "softap (master)" this not only sent out a infrastracure signal, but unlocked a "blue tether icon" that appeared on my notifications screen. However when I clicked the "Portable wifi tether" option. It gave me an error.. I was able to connect to the signal, but the internet wouldnt connect.. Also Ive tried the abd terminator and when I type in "get dns" it says "permission denied" any suggestions guys? I can provide screenshots if needed..

I read that this was also good for PSPs and other gaming systems that can't use ad-hoc. Certainly worth trying.

Infrastructure mode works for everything I have, but I sadly have no gaming systems to test it on. I use my desktop for that. (Skyrim) My desktop sees this one as a wireless network, like my house network, whereas the ad-hoc networks looked kind of funny in the list of wireless signals available to me.

I believe I found my DNS with a app called "set dns" but even after following the guide above I wasnt able to pull it off. Most likely because I have a ZTE Warp and not a Samsung Prevail.. I didnt even have the option to change the setup method to softap.. oh well.. I guess ill have to continue waiting until someone makes a custom rom for it that will enable the built in tethering..

Haveing a problem geting my ipod to conect to my tether. I followed the instructions. But it didnt work. I deleted app and reinstalled it 2 times. When i start tethering and connect the ipod it shows that ipod is connected to my phone and is useing bandwidth. My ipod shows its connected to my phone and shows the network connection symbol. But when i open up the browser it says theres no connection

Did you try this?

Thank you very much for the WiFi Tether for Root Users beta info. I have a Sony Tablet S and wanted to tether connection from my rooted Samsung Infuse. All your explanation was very useful, just that in my case I had to choose "Samsung Galaxy S" which has the most similar profile to my Infuse's, because the apk doesn't give a direct option for my device's model.

For those of you who don't know the difference between ad-hoc mode and infrastructure mode:

Ad-hoc mode is commonly used for tethering, rather than being a hotspot access point it uses direct communication with another device (aka a computer) and basically "shares" it's internet connection with that device.

Infrastructure mode is Like a wireless router that broadcasts, directly, the network connection. Certain devices, such as phones or psp's will only discover and connect to infrastructure wifi access points.

If you want to tether (wirelessly) your xbox, ps3, psp or other phones to your 3g service You need to use infrastructure mode. This is something I've figured out that works on the prevail for getting it to tether in infrastructure.

NOTE: You will need root access for this to work.

First get the new wireless tether 3.1 beta1 from android-wifi-tether - Wireless Tether for Root Users - Google Project Hosting

Then change the Device-profile to Samsung Galaxy Indulge

And last change the Setup-Method to Softap for Samsung (master)

You'll want to keep your phone awake during use or else you will lose the connection (I haven't figured out anyway to get past this) so you'll want to find a "stay awake" app such as "Stay Awake Widget"

Happy Infrastructure mode tethering :D

this didnt work for me on my laptop i try 2 see what's wrong i don't think it's geting the "dns" i downloaded the Terminal E. typed in "get dns pressed enter on my fone access denied need help!!!!

are you rooted?
If so, type 'su' first (no quotes)
Code:
su
get dns
If not, that is your problem :)
