Root root switch question

I think you may be slightly confused here so I will try to help you out.

The HTC Dev method for android 2.3.5 (h-boot 2.18) is the only one that leaves a watermark. Any of the other methods will change your H-boot to 6.xx but that is automatically changed back when you unroot. The HTC dev watermark (it says ***UNLOCKED*** at the the top of the h-boot) stays there even when you unroot and instantly voids any warranty.

There are ways to get rid of the watermark now, but it was permanent when it first came out.

I followed the method to get rid of it but I couldn't get unrevoked to work(which would have gotten rid of it. So I used revolutionary and it left their watermark. The tut that showed unrecoked showed screen shots of it gone, that's why I'm asking

In order to help you we need to know exactly what you did. After doing the HTC DEV method to unlock the bootloader you should have used this guide to get rid of the watermark:
[GUIDE] How to achieve S-OFF after unlocking 2.18 HBOOT with HTCDev.com - No More Watermark! :)
If you'd prefer to root/NAND unlock using Revolutionary, you can substitute the Froyo ROM file (in Step 10) with a Gingerbread ROM file (any version up to 4.54). The latest version unlockable with Revolutionary can be found here.

Is that what you did?

These different tools just use a vulnerability in the h-boot to give you root access. You cant "switch" root by using another one.

The vulnerabilities they used get patched in newer h-boots

Does your phone show S-off?

yes like rxpert says revolutionary does not show the watermark. if you still have it then sounds like your attempt to downgrade the misc partition did not work. when you entered the commands did it match with what it shows in the guide? and you need to make sure that whatever the guide says is supposed to happen actually happens before moving on. if something goes wrong do not skip that step. try and get the issue resolved first before moving on to the next step.

also what is your hboot now?

I got root and s-off. I am fully rooted. But, it shows -Revolutionary- where -unlocked- used to be at the top. I had to replace unrevoked with revolutionary as I was getting the error: software too new? with unrevoked. This isn't a big issue, I just didn't know if I could switch root methods after I was rooted

ok kewl... another quick question for you...

when flashing kernels, does it need to be done as pc36img or just from the recovery? i still cant seem to figure out when to rename roms and kernels or not.

Roms you will never need to rename. Only when you use a PC36IMG file which can be used fornumerous things. With roms and kernels you just need to flash it in recovery. On the phone now but there is the gingerbread guide that explains how to flash roms and kernels.

Thats fine, thats not a true watermark and will go away when you unroot. The **Unlocked** is the watermark

Mine shows revolutionary at the top as well and I have never touched the HTC dev method
To be fair, by definition, the text -Revolutionary- at the top of HBOOT is in fact a digital watermark. It is just a different watermark than the one left by the HTCDev unlocking process. In fact, the locked 2.18 stock HBOOT also has a digital watermark ("LOCKED (OOW)"), that allows Sprint/HTC to easily tell whether the phone has been unlocked.

As Rxpert said, the unrooting method for Revolutionary root will remove the Revolutionary watermark completely.

Using HTCDev.com to "relock" the 2.18 HBOOT however, will leave a watermark that says "RELOCKED" on HBOOT, which will alert Sprint/HTC that the device had been unlocked, and thus warranty has been voided.

While I'm sure there are a few EVOs that still qualify for the manufacturer's warranty (only a year old?), I think most are out of warranty anyway, so the watermark is really irrelevant. If you have Total Equipment Protection on your Sprint account/line, it doesn't matter if you return your device rooted or not. In fact, you're basically paying for rooting protection, in the even something happens to your device (of course, the deductible will apply if the phone has to be replaced).
