Do the reported multitouch problems affect you?

So i think most of us here know that the nexus one (or any HTC handset) has a problem with flipping axis when doing certain multi-touch gestures. Its reportedly a hardware fault so a fix is unlikely. I myself don't have have the N1, but plan on getting the HTC Desire which im assuming will have the problem too. So would any of you say that your experience with the phone has been dampened because of this? Anyone here who plays games regularly on their phone have nagging issues with it? I was really looking forward to some android gaming on my next handset, but now i dont know what to think.

Lastly would you recommend the phone even with this in mind because i was set on the Desire (essentially the same as the N1). I wouldn't know what to get if i couldnt get the Desire..

No, no one here 'knows' that there is an issue due to the fact that there are atleast 3 programs to test it and 2 of them say there is no problem. One program says so, there's no current reason to believe that one program.

To answer the question directly, I play games for hours every night on mine and have had zero issues. I'm at boot camp so I'm using this as my only form of electronic entertainment currently.

Are you planning on getting the Desire for the Sense UI? Because you know you could always root your phone and put the Sense rom on your Nexus One...

There is no issue... everyone is hating on this phone since day 1 cause their all jealous of the snapdragon..... meh

Affects jack-squat. It only becomes a problem if you're trying to touch the screen in very specific ways, so not really an issue for day-to-day use.

partly because of Sense UI, but mainly because of FM radio, and the fact that the Desire will be made available in Europe. The n1 only ships to the US and UK right now, so there's no way for me to get it.

Anyway the responses from this thread so far are positive, it seems that this issue is exaggerated. That's good for me I'll be getting the Desire then!

Yeah, I get the touch issue almost daily. Usually I'm just streaming music on the way to work and if I get a text and try to open it up I noticed that the screen is acting all backwards....my buddy, who also owns this phone, says it happens to him once in a while too. Never happens while playing a game or surfing the net, almost always when I'm streaming music and then go to do something else. Weird really. Simple to get it recalibrated though, simply lock and unlock the phone and it's fine for about a day or so.

There are no "problems", but there are some rather serious limitations. The particular screen HTC used is limited to 2 fingers max and will snap the points to the same axis when the points get close.

The axis flipping problem might be able to be fixed via software and only shows up if you move faster than a certain threshold, which is why some people might not notice it.

None of these limitations will effect pinch to zoom or other standard multi-touch features, and indeed 99% of apps out there won't have any problems. However, some games that want to have more complex interfaces will be much more limited.

Its only a dealbreaker to multi touch games, which is all of them for the nexus one.
Don't get me wrong, I Love my nexus one, I love it to death. For games I have my itouch (All it's good for )

It's just really annoying though. There are many things unplayable because of this.

I'm hoping the devs will cook something up. If the problem is consistent enough then maybe the multi touch code could be rewritten. Yes?

Really? Which 2 programs are you talking about? As far as I know there is one program that shows there is a problem and another that you can't tell if there is a problem because there is no color coding as in the first program. So, that program is definitely not saying there is no problem. I'm not familiar with a third one. Also, just because you don't notice a problem when using the phone, it doesn't mean there isn't an inherent problem with the phone.

You do realize that multi-touch involves more than just pinch-to-zooming right? It has nothing to do whether you use double tap. I'm not trying to be disrespectful or anything..just pointing that out.

Which programs prove otherwise?

By the way, it does affect me because it assures that Android developers won't be implementing complex multi touch controls to their apps--like Street Fighter IV which is available on the iPhone.

Steet Fighet should work even with this limitation because you dont actually cross the points of contact, your fingers stay on the two sides of the screen

Unfortunately the touch recognition switches between first and second fingers from time to time without crossing the Y-axis, the Y-axis causes an inverse flip which is a different issue.

i notice this issue on two apps. the one that was written to test it and shown in the video and multitouch paint.

on multitouch paint if i put my fingers together and draw lines out to each corner, then back, then back out to the same corners, within a few draws the lines then draw out to the two corners where my fingers aren't even going to.

this is so easy to replicate i can do it within 10 seconds every time.

I've never really had a problem with the multi-touch on my N1 but to be honest I can't see many apps where I could be affected. Most of the apps I could see would be affected are games.
I don't currently have a single multi-touch game on my device.

Can anyone suggest an app that would use multi-touch? I've got the test apps and the multi-touch paint app which clearly shows the problem with the axis crossing over and inverting. Like others have said, with this app it is very easy to replicate it over and over but again, I am still unaffected during day-to-day use.
