ICS 4.0.4: A Review (No Improvement)

It's been almost 2-3 weeks since I've manually updated to ICS 4.0.4. I liked it at first, but after the 3rd day or so, I of course got used to it and started seeing the performance impacts. Here are the things that I dislike most:

1. Blank Home screen - Wtf? I thought this problem almost was gone away with 2.3.6, but now it's back, and WORSE than ever. After almost every app, no matter if you keep pressing 'back' or 'home', the home screen will go blank for at least 5-10 seconds (more common when pressing 'home').

2. High Memory Usage - So the Nexus S has 500MB of memory, with about 330MB usable memory, correct? Why do I ALWAYS have only 30-70MB left, at all times? I even added up my open programs and they usually add up to around 40MB (minus Settings), but it always shows me something like 270MB is being used. Even adding up cached processes still doesn't equate to that much. Even tried a task killer, but it only kills the ~40MB that's open.
- So either there is a huge misrepresentation, or the memory is being dumped. This is causing lag in almost any app, including games such as Temple Run (very embarrassing to give a friend the phone to play on). BTW, the 'Recent Apps' does NOT kill the tasks.

3. Overall Sluggish Performance - There is virtually no improvement over Gingerbread. Apps/games run the SAME, I still get the same/if not more lag. Many apps still crash also. Clearing recent apps lags when swiping it off the screen. Opening app drawer and swiping fast also leads to a bit of lag.

4. Aesthetic Bugs - The new Caller ID is not any better than the old one! When selecting a a high-res picture, it comes out to some blurry one when you're done editing a contact's caller ID picture. What the ***? Half the time, when someone is calling, it'll take time for the picture to show up, and they chose to cut out the bottom third of the picture. All in all, the Caller ID almost stinks. Even music, when opening music you gotta scroll at least 4 times to the right to find your songs. No EQ or preference settings in 'Google Play Music', and I'm glad for lock screen controls, but they should have added a forward slider on the lock screen too.

5. Panoramic Shot - Cool feature, but why does it take ages to process once done, and why does it come out THAT low-res, even after finishing processing? Waste IMO, cool to show people but will almost never use it.

Overall, now I can see what Apple does and why people like them. They do everything perfectly and save users any trouble. They're smart. I thought ICS would topple them, but boy it's just another Android OS. I was always an anti-Apple person, but I can actually see it. Stability is where it's at. Can't believe I'm saying it, but I am starting to dislike Android. Next phone will be a BlackBerry or iPhone, or if Android decides to step up their game I might pick up a high-end phone. Google takes forever to release this, and in the end it isn't even worth it. I spent too much time typing this up because it's not even worth it. Haha.

Have you considered that perhaps there is something wrong and maybe it wasn't designed to run this way? Have you done a reset after updating?

My phone was a bit sluggish at first as well, after the factory reset (which they recommend after any major update) it was a lot better. It got rid of the blank screen (mine only did it for a second). I still get low RAM sometimes, but after rebooting the phone it is back to normal and it takes a few days to drain down...this might be a single app or two making things worse, I'm still investigating.

Anyways, point is, there is something going wrong, it shouldn't be running like this. Do you really think Google would release it that way?

Is apps all I'm losing? Contacts and stuff will stay?

Is there an option to reinstall everything at once?

Could I save the app data on my computer/sd card?

As long as you sync your Google account, your apps, contacts and calendar will re-sync after the initial setup following a restore. However, unlike windows backups you will not have the homescreens set out as they were before the restore; you will have to do this manually again. The only way to circumnavigate this is doing a Nandroid backup, but for this you need to be unlocked and rooted.

Okay. So I won't lose any app data, correct? I'm about to do this today right after I receive the answer.

I decided to do a reset as my phone was more sluggish after going from 4.0.3 to 4.0.4 via over the air update. I'm not currently rooted. To give an overview. I lost SMS messages which I should've expected without backup but not too fussed. I did a backup a month or so ago of them anyway. Once I'd put my wifi password back into the phone and my google account my apps were re downloaded. As for app data it was a bit hit and miss. Have had to enter all account and passwords again for tapatalk, twitter etc. Also annoyingly my games lost data such as quell direct and stick golf. Definately more responsive after the reset though. Perhaps I'm missing something but if an update come out every 3 months and I lose various settings then it is a bit of a pain. I'll probably look at some separate backup app next time to try and save game data. Hope this is of some interest to someone.

Onlyskillz, I have to say that I've nothing but praise for ICS. I agree over the first couple of weeks when I upgraded to 4.0.3 I had some bugs with certain Apps hanging but these were soon fixed with updates. With 4.0.4 I've got better battery life but still not as good as 2.3.6 but I'm happy to sacrifice this for the superb interface with ICS.

My wife has an iPhone 4 and it feels like a very old phone in comparison. I think the Nexus range of phones bring something unique to the smart phone market because we can set them up in the way we want with relative ease. This can have its frustrations but I enjoy being able to update my interface when I need/want to.

I have no idea what rooting means and I don't mess about with custome ROMS I just use the phone out of the box and check into here if I go astray!

Give it a chance!

Well, I am running CM 9 nightlies and I am more than happy with my phone. not saying, that there are no problems but overall its far better experience than CM 7 and its getting better everyday.

I know, that you are not talking about CM but stock ICS, anyway my opinion is that ICS is by far superior to Gingerbread. New UI rocks!
