(VZW) Nexus 4.0.X Update Discussion

If not being able to make a PHONE CALL from a PHONE is considered whining, then so be it. I have called Verizon... again, and again, and again. I've also called Samsung and that's about an hour of my life that I'm not getting back. I've gone through three replacements and all of them had faulty screens so I sent them all back. And rooting and/or installing custom ROM isn't going to do me any good, unless someone specifically developed a ROM that addressed the audio reboot issues.

I bought the Galaxy Nexus because that's the phone I wanted. I didn't buy it to trade it in for a lower-end phone a few months later. That's like buying a Mustang because you wanted a Mustang but you had to trade it in for a Focus because the wheels on the Mustang keep falling off, and Ford is holding onto upgraded lug nuts even though it knows its has customers that have wheels that fall off their Mustangs (not picking on Ford; that's just the first thing that came to mind).

I want them to hurry up and release the patch because I am going with another phone if the patch doesn't fix my problem. What choice do I have? I don't pay Verizon what I do every month to surf the web or watch movies; I can do that for free on my wifi tablet.

I paid good money for this device, and it doesn't matter whether it was $30 or $300. It should work and I expect them to fix it. Period, end of story.

The point is you can complain all you want on these forums and guess where it gets you? Nowhere.

I thought so too until the lady made an appointment to call me next week to make sure that my issues where resolved with this 'software update'
I've been told a few times they were going to call to follow up. And they never did call back...last week I called Verizon about my Gnex and they told me about the update coming in May. They couldn't tell me what part of May. I told them I could wait a week but not a month for the update. They told me they are waiting for Samsung on the update and they couldn't tell me the exact date. Then they offered to switch me to a different device. Which I ended up doing . And couldn't be happier. I get great service, don't drop calls and great battery. All the problems I had are solved. So I don't have ics..so what..bottom line the tech didn't seem to confident with the update date and offered to make me happy..which they did

Good on VZW and good on you for being pro-active and not dealing with a phone you were not happy with  Bravo!

They offered me that option also. What device did you ultimately use and did you have to pay full price for it?

All the delays from Verizon really shouldn't come as a surprise. Neither can you ever trust a CSR for insider info. At best they read the forums and can give you the latest rumors. They know nothing because they are told nothing. The update will release when Verizon thinks it's ready.

You're absolutely right and I've never been critical of the CSRs because I know they don't know. I just don't like being kept in the dark. I hate that cloak and dagger crap.

Agreed, but this is a discussion forum and I am discussing my frustration with other Galaxy Nexus owners who are also frustrated. My apologies if I've misunderstood the purpose of these forums.

Naw, I totally agree with you. I hate this 007 crap VZW pulls with every phone release and software update.

Plus, NO ONE should be criticizing you because you want to vent. Since our wives won't listen to us, we have to vent somewhere. I am always amazed by the VZW fanboys here who jump on your stuff when you have an issue with the company's crappy cone of silence. And who gives a flying fig if some dude wants to vent about not getting his software update? Like I said before, read the title and move on. AND Complaining to VZW doesn't get you anywhere either. Sure, I can get a different phone, but that's not why I waited for the Nexus to be released....only to trade it 6 months later?!!?!. I want a Galaxy Nexus that works the way it should! And it should be Google's, Verizon's, Samsung's responsibility to make that product works correctly even after the sale!!! It's unreasonable to tell a person to suck it up and deal or get a new phone or root!!!!

Problems that 90%+ of people notice are what i mentioned. Problems that 10-20% notice should be put on the back burner to the issues everyone notices and get those fixes out. If they would have done that the majority of the nexus complaints would be fixed and we would just be looking for more improvements in performance and some odd here and there bugs. Everything has the smaller bugs

I have to say that, while I too am frustrated with the wait for fixes/updates, the reality is that 90%+ of people aren't "having all these problems". Not even 90% of the people on this forum are reporting call problems... and forums notoriously over-represent problems (since people don't seek out forums to post about how great their phone is).

I think there are definitely some radio issues, but I think they tend to show themselves in certain areas of coverage that are problematic for this phone. I for one haven't lost a single call or had any phone call-related problems. I think the problem exists but it doesn't affect most users of the device because of their coverage areas. Again, there are definitely issues with the radio, and I think that explains why Verizon has delayed the release for so long.... there's really nothing else that they need to concern themselves with besides the radios, right?

I also think that a lot of people with problems may just have a physically defective phone but are convinced that its a software thing by all the negative stuff they read on forums like this. I'm NOT saying people aren't having real issues with signal strength and call drops so please don't flip out. I'm just saying there are definitely some people posting here with issues that are probably a defective device that should be exchanged.

Certainly there are 'bugs' that need fixing. Keyboard lag in landscape is definitely one, and one that Google has stated is included in the next release (I wonder if anyone on the GSM version can confirm that?). I think there will also be battery life improvements as a result of tweaking the OS and how certain services operate on the phone (ie not running in the background eating battery). I'm sure there are many more bugs that we don't even realize exist that are being fixed.

I think you will see 4.0.5 pushed to AOSP before you see it on Verizon and that is what the rumors have said, that Verizon GNex will get 4.0.5 and not 4.0.4

Currently the latest source in the AOSP is 4.0.4 so unless 4.0.5 gets pushed soon (which will definitely be posted here when it does) I don't think we will see an update. Wishful thinking though - never hurts to hope.

Do you think a Verizon/CDMA-specific upate will get pushed to AOSP?

Do you think a Verizon/CDMA-specific upate will get pushed to AOSP?

From what I understand the way it works is the following:

Google pushes source code (4.0.5) to AOSP.
4.0.5 contains Android code and GSM radios.
Verizon/CDMA binaries and radios are not owned/provided by Google so you need carrier interaction.
Verizon/CDMA carrier will pull 4.0.5 down and put their radios and binaries in.
Verizon then tests the update and pushes it out to its users.

I believe this is the reason we don't get updates DIRECTLY from Google -- because of the binaries. GSM version of the Nexus have the radios in the source code by Google so that code can be pushed straight to the device.

However, people have been told for months by VZW customer support "it'll be out at <now>" where <now> is perpetually 1 month away. I have deja vu from the pre-release thread...:

Customer support could have been telling the truth the entire time as well(it's significantly more likely they were than not). They can't predict when there will be delays due to bugs that are found during testing.

The following isn't directed at you:

People just love to whine is really all it is. Delayed update = whining, rushed update that comes out right away but is buggy = whining, quick update that comes out that isn't buggy but doesn't fix much = whining. There is no winning for the people working on this update in the eyes of the forum goers.

Most of us do not have major problems. I would be happy with the phone if it didn't get another update. It works fine for me. People who have gigantic show stopping problems should get a replacement or another phone.

Trust me i promise you the users mentioned that "say" they have the update are already being prompted by Devs to drop the build to them if they do in fact have it. If so it will be out by tomorrow probably

Oh if a dev gets ahold of them and gets their time, it will literally take like 5 minutes to rip the radios out :D
