I recently bought a Samsung Galaxy Ace and it doesn't play mp4 videos. The specs provided by gsmarena show that Galaxy Ace support the following media types and codecs.

- MP4/H.264/H.263 player
- MP3/WAV/eAAC+ player

So why is it not playing the mp4 files? The video codec for my mp4 file is H.264. It's really perplexing me!!! HELP!

I think you could be right!! The video's display size 480x270. I am playing this video inside my application which is using a VideoView. The VideoView sets the video's size to 320x261

Im checking this through the DDMS interface in Eclipse IDE.

Maybe that's the issue, but I don't why is it changing the screen to that!! it's really annoying. I also tried to play the video from the File explorer in my phone, it didn't work either.

I can play a MP4 H264 vid on my Ace using the app Rockplayer lite (free).
I use Leawo Video Converter and change the resolution to 640x480 and it plays back fine.Hope this helps.:)
Best Video Converter download- convert videos among avi/mp4/rmvb/wmv/3gp/mov/mpeg/asf video files.

I could not play the file 'adventures of tintin.avi'. After I renamed the file to - 'adventures of tintin.mp4', I still could not play it. Then I installed rockplayer and the file is now playing on rockplayer , but there is no audio...

Hi, as posted above, use Moboplayer! Download it free from our app market (+ the codec) & most things will play trouble-free :dancing:

I know this is an old thread, however it came up when I was looking for something, and I reckon the solution is still relevant, not just to the Galaxy Ace (people are still using this phone, I've just picked one up: cheaper than an iPhone).
I believe it'll be because of the file extention. The player on a default setup will only (?) play files with a .mp4 extention. And renaming a file with a .mp4 extention will not help. It has to be created with that extention as there are some differences in the files.
It will play YouTube videos. However, that's in the browser, which is something different!

As we all know, Android does announce that MP4 is one of Android compatible formats. However, people still encounter the issue of Android won't play MP4. Why? The reason is MP4 is a container format which means this format may contain various kinds of audio and video codecs while Android is only compatible with MP4 encoded with MPEG-4 or H.264 AVC.

THere is a guide which introduces a powerful tool named Faasoft MP4 to Android Converter to solve "Can't Play MP4 on Android" issue so that you can play any MP4 files in Android phones and tablets.
