Help can the evo work without a carrier

i have an evo that is not activated, but i still can use it with wifi. that is the only way you can get data with an evo that is not activated. otherwise you can tether it with another phone or get a wireless card from one of the wireless providers.

Same here. I text from my EVO using an app called Text Plus. The app even lets you make calls. You can buy minutes very cheap. 100 minutes for $1.99. But I"m running off wifi. I'm planning on flashing to Boost soon and using the "daily" plan, not monthly.

I have seen it, were they flash over the evo to boost mobile but where r u going with that? It’s still 55 bucks. There’s got to be a way to have 3g active even though the phone is not. I have seen with my own eyes a G1 rooted and it was non-active and it had working internet. Any thoughts I’d love to hear them!

Not sure if the person who had the G1 was using radio's from a carrier that was easy to access as far as internet. I've heard of people using Verizon radio's on the EVO but have never witnessed it personally. I'm not sure how often they check systems to make sure there is no illegal use or if they do but that would be the closet to what your asking that I can think off. However those phones still have service with sprint and are roaming

i just got to believe it is possible! My other idea is to put the deactivated evo 4g on on the same line as the new phone so i can use the root of the evo for wifi teathering and then use the new phone for phone stuff idk. there has to be way to connect to some 3g with a deactivated evo :)

Im running a vzw prl all day every day. Sprint service even a mile outside of town where i live sucks, and verizons is pretty damn good. If youre rooted, flashing the vzw prl is pretty easy, but you need to be on a sense rom and the phone has to be active on the sprint network. I get about 1.7 Mbps down and about 500 Kbps up vs about half of that with the most current/up to date sprint prl. I did get one gestapo letter from sprint about 5 mos ago or so, but havent heard squat from them since then. I got em to lay off by flashing the stock prl back and downloaded a bunch of random crap that i instantly deleted just to bolster the amnt of in network data usage, since then the words been mum from them. When i dial *2, i get the "welcome to verizon activation" message. But a word to the wise, you CAN and very well may get booted for doing this trick. It happened to Mr. Ed and EVOMattNC.
