Root [CM7 Easy Installation]

Hello Everyone, hopefully I'm just missing something. I tried the steps below and keep running into a problem where it's stuck on the Ascend boot screen (not the CM7 boot screen so there's no boot loop):

Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache partition
go into advanced
Wipe dalvik cache
back out to main menu
go into mounts and storage
Format boot
Format system
Format data
Format cache
back out to main menu
Install zip from sdcard
Choose zip from sdcard
select CM7 zip
select gapps zip
back out to main menu
Advanced
Fix permissions
back out to main menu
Reboot system

I've tried it with these ROMs:
PlayfulGod CM7.2-Ascend (09122011) (748 OverClock defaulted to 710)
PlayfulGod CM7.2-Ascend (09132011) (710 OverClock defaulted to 710)
PlayfulGod CM7.2-Ascend (09132011) (710 OverClock defaulted to 600)

Always seem to get stuck on the Ascend screen. I'm rooted. Originally had 2.2, rooted via Gingerbreak and when I couldn't get it going, I tried going to Metro PCS stock 2.1, used Z4 to root, then tried the exact steps above, even the extra formats and the permissions fix at the end. Waited 15 mins during each boot and it's stuck on the Ascend screen (before the CM7 boot screen).

---- Edit for additional info: Well, since that didn't work, I went back to Metro PCS stock 2.1 following a sticky thread here, then went to 2.2 via OTA and I can't root my phone now. Gingerbreak just sits on:
Rooting ....
Running exploit ...
This may take a few minutes !
Device will reboot on sucess !

Waited about 20 minutes twice.

This keeps getting better and better! :)

Any ideas?

You are the second Ascender that I know that switch back to 2.2 then ginger break wouldn't work. Google SuperOneClick root. I would give you the link/program but I'm on my phone. It will root you.

I think I'm ok for now. I went back to 2.1 and I could use Z4root and it worked. For kicks, I went back to 2.2 OTA again and it wouldn't root so I went back to 2.1, rooted it, then I tried Bobz's last ROM and that worked so I'm a little behind, but at least I got Cyanogenmod on it now.

Glad to know that I'm not the only one with the rooting problem.

Now if I can only get any of PlayfulGod's ROMs to work on my dumb phone...

Hi guys, I just installed CM7.2-Ascend-09132011-signed to my ascend, and now the usb connection from phone to computer doesn't work. Its saying I need to install drivers, but doesn't find any drivers to install?

Also, it is asking for a CD to install the drivers but of course there probably isn't one. So help please.

@Zepyonx

I also noticed after CM 7.2 that my phone didn't seem to connect to my computer in the same way. I had to install drivers.

In my case I have and use PdaNet and when you install that on your computer it gives you options (that you can access at any time) for installing drivers.

That's how I got it to work.

So try downloading the trail version of PdaNet and see how that works. It worked for me.

I have had an awesome time on here learning how to juice up my phone. Ive been running with Cynogen for about a year now and it was really fun but my Ascend got lazy and slow. So I have upgraded and got the Huawei Mercury. My question is after I put my Ascend back to stock how do I clean up my SD card to just the contacts and my pictures so I can put it in my other phone? I dont want to wipe it or leave any of files that could arent necessary for my other phone.

Thanks for everything from all who hace helped me!!!!:)

There's a few ways you could do this:

1) Use a file explorer app,w/the most popular being ROOT EXPLORER,navigate your SD Card & delete any unwanted content.

2) Get a card reader & use your desktop/laptop to view the contents of your card. Then, you could copy all the content to your desktop & wipe the entire card,or,just delete the unwanted content.
You could also accomplish this by hooking the phone up to your PC via USB or,wirelessly,w/the app SAMBA FILE SHARING,or,a similar app, just look it up in the ANDROID MARKET.

3) Transfer/import all your contacts to your GOOGLE account & upload all of your pix to PICASA, & then format/delete all the contents of your card & then import the contacts & pix back to your SD Card.

Hello all. First off I wanna thank all contributors to this thread. I have a rooted huawei ascend running 2.2 and am attempting to get cm7 on my phone. I already downloaded cm7.2 (9/13/2011) and gapps-gb (06/13/2011). I have a few questions tho before I continue on, and any help/answers are greatly appreciated. P.S I'm kinda noob as far as installing new roms and what not, so my questions are apt to show that.
Ok, first will this combo (cm7.2 (9/13/2011) and gapps-gb (06/13/2011)) work good together?
2. Is cwm 3.0.0.5 or cwm 5.0.2.3 more highly recommended? I know the thread says cwm3.xxx but cwm 5.xxx offers "Allows sd-ext to be backed up and restored. Unofficial." Which I've read it has issues, but sd being backed up I kind of like.. I dunno, what do you all think? :-D (I'm a mess)
3. Does the sd card have to be blank? I have stuff I don't wanna lose and have no access to comp to do partition thingy. I can format my hubby's card and use it, but does the sd card I use to complete flash have to stay in the phone after it's done?

And I'm going to stop there, sorry for long post, I tend to want to know all the details before doing something that could brick my phone. Thank you to everyone who responds. I greatly appreciate it, heck the fact that anyone would read this whole post, I greatly appreciate it! lol

1) The selection of CM7 09132011 is fine,it's the most functional version of CM7 available for the ASCEND.

If you run into the problem of getting stuck in a bootloop, you may have what is known as a "LAZY" ASCEND,simply meaning the CPU in your handset is a bit weak & cannot handle the 710 mHz that the normal CM7 90132011 is maxed out at.If this is the case, try a LAZY version, which is clocked @ approx 672 mHz.

On the other hand,if your ASCEND has a stronger than average CPU,try CM7 09122011,it's clocked @ 729 mHz.

2) Try out GAPPS dated 8/28/2011,I believe it's the latest update available for the ASCEND/CM7.
Don't be alarmed if the MARKET looks dated when you first load this up.It will update itself within minutes after you first open it.

3) I'd go w/the 3.0.2.8 version of CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY (CWM 3.0.2.8)It's 100% functional & the SD-EXT function works,where in CWM 3.0.0.5 it isn't.

4) For the DT A2SD (APPS TO SD CARD,one of the coolest features of this ROM) to work properly, you need to partition the SD CARD.Sadly, this will delete any & all content from the card.If you can back-up your card contents to various cloud-based services(PICASA/DROPBOX,etc.....)then you can do all of this w/o a computer, even partitioning the SD CARD.

Partitioning the SD CARD can be accomplished within CWM RECOVERY 3.X.X.X. See TOKENPOKE'S " ULTIMATE ASCEND CUSTOMIZATION GUIDE" for the step by step instructions for this & all things root related, including Installation of CWM RECOVERY,CM7,GAPPS & of course, rooting your phone.

just finished with my install of the lazy cm7, just to be on the safe side. gotta say, nice work!

you guys are awesome

edit; just finished with the upgrade to 710, awesome, super smooth, awesome apps, awesome audio control and eq, did i mention its awesome! once i get that little green card in the mail, i got a donation for ya!

the super lazy 640 whatever it was, was too laggy between apps and scrolling, it was nice though, but even after a couple boots, and double checking caches were clear, i couldnt take it anymore.

I posted this in the CWM installation thread, but I'm reposting this here hoping it will help. Successfully flashed CM7 on the Ascend!

I was able to root a Cricket Ascend with Z4 Root, and also installed SuperUser and Terminal Emulator. Then I put CWM, the CM7 ROM and gapps on the SD card. I was getting nowhere with the Terminal Emulator commands, so I downloaded ROM Manager. With that, I was able to flash CWM and boot into the CWM recovery screen (which will show orange text against a black background and give many more options rather than the stock four).

After backing up everything (apps, texts, contacts, SD card, etc.) did wipe data/ factory reset and wipe cache. Flashed the CM7 ROM. Stuck in boot screen for a long time, so I took the battery out, went back into recovery (POWER + VOL UP + SEND [far left bottom button]). Wiped data and cache again, then went into "mounts and storage" and formatted the boot, data, system and cache (I should have formatted battery stats, since the battery readings have been rather erratic, but I'll save that for later). This did the trick!

Once you're in there, be careful of overclocking. I had it set to 710 (I went with a lazy ROM), and the Ascend kept rebooting. Moved it down to the mid 600s range. Aside from that, everything works well, or at least as well as this crude little phone will work.

THX for sharing your experiences w/us,all tips & tricks vary a bit from phone to phone w/the ASCEND(or so it seems).
Hopefully your experience will serve someone else in the future.:D

No prob. That's why I posted my experiences.

It's not my phone, it's a friend's (I have an LG Optimus V, which I had already rooted and flashed). The Ascend is not a very good phone, IMO. A bit crude for my tastes. And I did notice that even after flashing GB on it, it still ran pretty sluggish. ADW Launcher kept force closing and freezing up. What I did was to go back into ROM Manager and I selected "Fix permissions". Since then, it has run considerably better. I also turned off all animation, since the phone can't handle it well anyway. Not perfect, but the phone is running better than it ever has.
