Help Kies and ics update confusion

Ok, so I have an unlocked international version. When I first got the phone I had an ota update to 2.3.6.

After reading various posts on the internet, some are saying you need kies to update to ics when the time comes because Samsung don't push their updates ota. Is this true? I'm confused, because as I said, when I first turned my phone on I could update to 2.3.6.

On my HTC's it was always ota.

Some updates are OTA as your aware. Big ones like ICS are usually via KIES. So they do do both

Neither Kies or OTA sends notification. You have to check for updates on both methods.

And just for clarification..... Small updates are done via OTA. Major updates as in ICS are done via Kies.

There is an option in Settings->About phone->Software update to push messages about new updates.

It has notified me about all the minor revisions and I presume it will notify me about those that need Kies.

Kies does pop up a message asking if I want to apply an update when I connect my phone and there is an update pending.

Which is what I said....
I did say neither will send a notification, you have to check manually.
Manually on the phone is as you mention under Settings.
Manually on the PC is using Kies when you attach your phone.

and no, your phone's Settings will not notify you if an update is available via your PC's Kies software.

I mean I am automatically notified of OTA updates. I do not have to manually check.
