Welcome to the forums! :)

Rooting a phone is the same thing as getting Admin access on a PC.

From there, you get more options and control of your phone, for example, installing DroidWall, the Android firewall, or getting more backup options.

In addition, yes, you can replace the system altogether, but that's not the only point of rooting. And as anoniemouse says, not really desirable here.

Moving this to our root forum for you. :)

here are my summary for reasons/benefits for rooting my HTC ONE X :)

1. better battery/phone performance on the custom firmwares - eg, ARHD - efficient and clean

2. Titanium backup
this is by far the most powerful/simple/efficient backup available for android. Many ppl rooted their phone just for this

3. battery meter mods - show percentage of your current battery power on the top bar battery icon.
i dont know why htc/android didnt inbuild this feature..

4. 3 dot menu bar removal mod
background: ICS4 (the base operating system our One X is on) apparently by default has a 'bottom bar' where you can press for menu/option for apps. eg go to evernote or facebook, your notice the bar is right at the bottom of the screen with 3 vertical dots in the middle.
The thing is once you familarise with your phone you'll realise this is rather annoy as it take up that extra space of your beautiful screen.
By rooting you'll be able to apply this mod and get rid of this black bar on the bottom!!! (author re-maps this function to 'long press the home button' which is brilliant).

5. remove branding and bloatware
my came with vodafone branding and useless bloatware for me.

Hope this helps ppl with understanding their phone more :)

Downside at the minute and it is a biggy is that you lose your warranty for unlocking the bootloader. However with the kernel source released the devs and community at large are looking to achieve a non HTC involved security off exploit (S-OFF) so as to achieve root and more without losing warranty and to allow the phone to be put back to stock before you make a warranty claim.

This approach for me is highly beneficial as the device is less than 12 months old and its cost a small fortune I don't want to be throwing a valuable warranty away. With 1.29 and the Apex Launcher I'm happy atm. El Presidente and D-U-R-X will vouch my flashaholic tendencies so trust me when I say I want root bad. However for me it really isn't worth the risk of having issues getting hardware related issues fixed because of using htcdev.

Agree with you, thats the only thing that is holding me back at the moment. I m sure someone will get the S-OFF fixed soon enough as a lot of people have taken up this phone after seeing how much of a letdown the sgs3 was.

don't confuse the OP by talking about root and custom roms in the same breath

ROOTING IS NOT CUSTOM ROM

The same method to achieve both (unlock bootloader via htcdev) is the common factor

rooting by itself does NOTHING to improve anything on your phone, it gives you admin rights to then make further changes / mods (some of which can improve battery life sure)

but the biggie is custom ROM (like ARHD mentioned above) which is flashing an entire OS, thats where people talk about getting better batt life etc.

I suggest you go to XDA and get reading...

Both void your warranty ;) and as such I can't with all good conscience recommend anything requiring the use of htcdev to gain even root access.

I come from a Motorola Droid X. As most know by now, it has never had an unlocked boot loader. Unlocked boot loaders allow you to install different "kernels".
The phone was rooted early on and thousands including me did and are still installing custom roms on the phone.
Getting root means a developer does indeed have the ability to make many changes to the operating system. This would be called a custom rom. A fully unlocked boot loader means a developer can completely change the kernel. This would allow you to install a completely new OS.
The words root and rom can indeed be used in the same sentence.

I do agree 100% however that doing either can cause your warranty to be voided! Be very knowledgeable of why/what you are doing before hand :)

An example of a rooted device running a custom rom,,,,,,,,,
