Help Sudden death after ICS upgrade

About once every day or maybe every second day my ICS upgraded SGS2 just dies.
It takes a very long power button push or even battery removal/replacement to restart it.
It did it just now when I rejected an incoming call.

The worst thing is that I often don't know that it has turned itself off and it can sit in my pocket or on my desk for an hour or so. Then I wonder why the phone is so quiet, then I look and it isn't on

I'm a complete amateur at the Android OS - How can I go about isolating the cause of this issue?

I would take your phone, under warranty, to a Samsung Service Point and explain your situation and they will re-flash it for you.

You could, of course, do a Factory Reset of the phone which would return it to its virgin, out-of-the-box, state but with ICS still installed, in case it is one of your app's or settings that is causing the problem. You would then have to re-sync your phone with Google to get Contacts, Calendar, app's back again... provided you've backed them up with Google.

I remember reading that the kernel which came with one of the ICS firmware's was prone to sleep of death. I'm pretty sure it was either the Optus or one of the Netherlands releases.

That sounds nasty old boy!

Will try and track that firmware down.

In that case OP, I suggest option #1... Samsung Service Centre.

That version causing SOD was the first release of the LP9 firmware. I believe it was corrected with a second release of LP9 .

I'm glad Optus does not have the "SOD" bug!!


I think I'll hang on for a while and see if the frequency of shutdowns gets better or worse.
If it gets worse, I can do a factory reset and reload all my stuff reasonably easily.
The put the apps back one or two at a time to try to isolate the cause.

I did a factory reset yesterday and reinstalled half my apps.
So far, no SOD.

So I did the factory reset on Friday and so far - 3 days later, everything is working fine. No SOD.

I've only reinstalled my main apps and I have taken care not to install any of the apps that have to do with screen locks or stuff going on when the phone is asleep.
No more Noled, no Lookout, no Magic Lock, no SMS Blinker, no Phone Setting Master, no Pocket Locker.

The phone is running better - A couple of things like Gmail Notifier widget was very laggy and now updates to the correct count immediately, so it's all looking OK for now.

One week later, no more SOD!
It looks like it must have been related to an app that I had installed.

Gotta say that without Noled and Lookout and a few other lock screen apps that I was running, and maybe with the two factory resets as well, my battery life is absolutely outstanding now!
Had the phone on charge for only 3 hours in the last 30 hours. Battery is at 69%! That included around 90 minutes talking time yesterday and over an hour of Angry Birds this morning
