Opinions on HTC EVO V 4G

I'm still on the fence with this one (someone has already leaked a rom for it) as I'm unsure if VM will force 4G payments along with the monthly fee, or if they will allow us to still use the phone using 3G (the phone is 3G and 4G capable).

Not sure how I feel about owning an HTC phone to begin with as I don't care for Sense UI. I love it's widgets though.

They didn't mention anything about a 4G surcharge so I think it'll just start at $35/month.

It'll just be a matter of time before someone develops ICS ROMs for it like CM9 or (hopefully) AOKP.

I'm sure you're right, but I'm still a tad leery of an impending surcharge. VM USA isn't making the wisest decisions lately IMHO.

According the all the press articles there is no 4g surcharge but all the people on a $25 plan will have to move to $35 price. So that is the only price change unless signing up for tethering. I can't believe there are any people willing to stay on the Triumph over this phone. I'll probably get this now instead of switching to t-mobile's $30 plan.

If you don't like sense you just change your launcher. I too would have preferred vanilla android but we are getting ICS so this is going to be a great replacement for a phone that I have had to call CS and get a replacement for 4 times in less than a year. I know every product line has a certain amount of defective units but the triumph ships with multiple defects from the huawei/foxconn factory. I've never heard of someone having to replace 4 or more phones due to manufacturing defects before.

Indeed hehe. I tried this with my boyfriends HTC Eris, but when I added Launcher Pro he completely lost all availability to the Sense widgets, which in my opinion is the only thing worth keeping from the UI. I ended up uninstalling LP so he could keep the cool widgets he likes so much.

Ok, so they added tethering. I occasionally use the built-in tether feature on my Optimus V, and have never been warned about it, because I use very little data when I use it. How are they going to know that someone is tethering?

I know there is a way, It's how the other companies know and throttle you.
I'm not exactly sure the technology behind it but it basically looks for surges in your data usage.

Though if you are not using highly data intensive programs, I doubt that it would be a problem.

Alright, whenever I use it, its just for doing things I would do on a phone, I just want a larger screen, like a laptop. I really hope this phone gets good dev support. That's why I am still with the OV.

Unthrottled 4G? HELL YES.

My opinion of the phone: It's about damn time. The Triumph was a half-ass attempt by VM to get people interested into prepaid again. The Evo V 4G delivers- 4G, 3D camera (which... is whatever, for me anyway.), a dual-core processor, and ICS right out of the box. It won't be a phone that in a year I will go "I HATE MY PHONE," even if VM doesn't update it, the developer base for this phone is big already, and will only become bigger. AND! It is supported by CyanogenMOD.

As far as 4G goes, sure it's WiMax, but it ain't going anywhere if there is a base to support it. (And I think Boost/VM along with the people on Clear can do just that.)

Just my two cents. Carry on!

Just so you guys know, VM handles some RIL stuff differently, so any custom ROMs for that phone will have to be made to work with VM. It won't all work untouched from the other 3VO versions. Granted it will be a lot easier than making ROMs from scratch, but it isn't just flashing other 3VO version ROMs and viola!

I wish I had stated that. *facepalm*

4G has the same limits as 3G. 2.5gb per month before throttle, or 3.5gb per month with the purchase of the 4G hotspot device and monthly plan.

This was updated and they stated that they will not be throttling 4G data.

"Update: We just heard from Sprint that 4G data is truly unlimited and will NOT be throttled
