Hey Everyone..

First post here and I hope I stay..

Anyway my grandfather is getting a phone, and needs a contract, but doesn't know a thing about cellphones. So basically, he is getting a voice contract with a smartphone and we swap phones. We both benefit right?

So basically, this will be my spare phone, and I will see if I like it enough for it to replace my iphone as my primary device. Anyway here are the questions I have :

1) Is it possible to get the HTC Magic/Dream with only a voice plan contract with Rogers?

2) Which phone should I get, the HTC Dream or Magic? I heard there were many fixes in the Magic. Both of them cost the same amount of money.

3) I listen to music a lot and heard that their is no 3.5mm headphone jack. What kind of jack is there? Is there an adapter?

Alright guys, I am getting the phone after all. Going to buy the phone with a data and cancel the plan and pay the 100$ fee.

Basically, my questions are still here :

Which is better HTC Dream or Magic (G1 or G2)? Can someone list all the differences?

Where can I buy accessories such as cases and screen protectors locally?

Are you asking about the G1/ADP1/Dream vs the magic/Mytouch 3g/ion or are you asking about G1/ADP1/Dream vs Hero/G2 touch??

I am asking about the HTC Dream (G1) vs the HTC Magic (Google Ion/G2/MyTouch3G)

Why do we need 3 names for one phone?

I am not considering the hero since my carrier doesn't have it, and while I would like to buy one I am mainly buying this phone for Android OS/UI, while the Hero has Sense UI (I Believe).

Magic has more ram, more internal memory(which can come in handy because you can't install apps to the sd card) and a better battery(though I'm pretty sure you can replace the battery in the dream with a better one). Obviously, the downside is that you don't get a keyboard, although it is nice having a thinner phone.

Screw getting an adaptor. Just get a good pair of Bluetooth headphones. So much easier..

I could have sworn you could get them without a data plan if you paid a bit more.. maybe that was a different phone though. I don't know.

just to clarify the HTC Hero is the G2 NOT the magic/ion/mytouch 3g and the reason for all the names is because different carriers rebrand and rename the phone ...

Alright I will go with the magic since it is apparently better and I dont really have a use for the external keyboard.

How much internal memory does it have, because I was going to buy an 8GB SD Card. Which one's are recommended for use?

Also sorry about that because I read somewhere that the Google Ion is the Magic.

Also I really need the adapter because I love listening to music and I bought expensive headphones for the cause. So is the adapter included or do I have to buy it somewhere else?

Also what kind of cool mods can you do with those phone? I am coming from an iPhone 3G and you can jailbreak and make it do all kinds of crazy things, are there any hacks with this phone?

Ok, if you go with the magic any sd card that is class 6 is a good choice.... as for the ION it is the magic you confused me by calling it the G2 which is what the HTC HERO was re-branded so i saw it as you referencing two phones so couldn't answer either way... as for the adaptor i know its included with the G1/Dream but I personally use wireless headphones.. As for your iphoneism "jailbreak" yes you can root your phone and make it do ALOT more and use custom builds the options for android FAR exceed the options for a "jailbroken" iphone.... but then again right out of the box the phone has the ability to do more than the iphone so....

Alright so, I have heard about this so called "Root", and unfortuantely could not find any FAQs etc on the topic, I did search.

So here are my next set of questions.

1) How do I root, what are the dangers of rooting, and what are the advantages?

2)I tried the showcase dream at the store today (its just the casing of it, no internals) and the trackball seemed rather stiff. Is it really like that?

3) NVM this last part. Found some. Any especially recommended MicroSD Cards?

1) if you search this site for "root" ( Android Forums - Search Results ) you will find a wealth of information including instructions on how to do it... Basically if you have ever used a linux based system rooting adds the su / sudo / superuser to the phone
allowing you to access and manipulate things on a core/root level... meaning if you can think of it chances are you can make the phone do it...

2) On my dream/G1 is it is not stiff at all probably just a beat to hell demo that you tried...

3) specially recommended ones???

Sorry I weirdly edited the post..

Recommend MicroSD Cards. Would something like this be good? : HIGH SPEED Class 6 8GB Micro SD MicroSD Memory Card 8G on eBay.ca (item 260456276869 end time 31-Aug-09 17:00:00 EDT)

Going to read up on rooting, If I have any questions I will post here.

Also I heard some paint chipping issue on the Magic, true or false?

Like i said sd cards just make sure you go class 6 as it does greatly affect your speed even more so if you are rooted....

as for chipping i heard there was a paint issue on gen 1 white Dream/G1 phones but NOTHING since but i am also not running a mytouch 3g/magic so cant say for sure....

if you need help rooting feel free to email or pm me....

Alright cool, I pretty much understand how to Root now.

But I still don't know the pros of rooting. What good comes out of root?

its not so much of what rooting does its the doors it opens because you can now modify ANDROID itself not just the apps and things you add to it... hard to explain entirely if you want to see how much it expands the phones abilities simply search the market for "root" and see all the apps you can get then look around for rooted builds and see what functions etc they add as well...

The adaptor did not come with my rogers magic but you can buy them pretty cheap.

Rooting also allows you to put custom roms on your phone which can greatly change the performance/features/look of your phone.

I thought the class of an sd card only had to do with writings speed. How does this affect the performance of the phone?

most rooted builds also move cache and apps to the sd to improve performance and space hence the faster the card the faster the apps etc...

Sweet so that means I can store apps on the SDcard?

Thats great. And what do you mean by rooted builds, its like an android firmware with some tweak in it or what? I will have to restore or upgrade to a rooted firmware to get some kind of tweak?

There are a LOT of different rooted builds you can browse them here Builds - GetYourDroidOn and yes they all have different levels of modifications done to them... and as far as returning to a root build you can do that with the builds from here OTA / Un-Root / Official Builds - GetYourDroidOn and yes you can store apps and more on the sd
