Alright I have heard the horror stories about rooting and it makes me nervous. My phone is 2 days old (purchased from Best Buy) and I really want to root it. I found the following instructions to do it...can someone give me the thumbs up on the process?

How To: Root Your Sprint HTC Hero | The Unlockr

I am worried about "bricking" it and wanted to know what would happen if this was the result. Could I play dumb to best buy and act like I dont know what happen?

I have experience working on Linux servers....I do the apache side of things and I am comfortable with the commands....though I always have this "what if" feeling in the back of my head. What if my laptop locks up, what if what if what if.....

Read the post that is stickied at the top of this forum...I suggest the manual method, so you will understand what is happening.

If you flash a new ROM, most of us are now running DamageControl 1.0 which is an Android 2.1 build. If you do it, there are a couple of things to know. Come back and ask what those gotchas are after you get it rooted. (need to wipe, flash mms update.zip, use google voice instead of VVM).

I will spare you posting the details of that ROM right now so you don't get confused about the rooting process.

One thing I will comment on regarding this post. While DamageControl is a good ROM, I don't think you can speak for all and generalize what everyone is running. There are still a lot of people that are running Fresh 1.1 and here is why it will stay in the guide for now. It is a complete ROM that has worked for a while now. While DamageControl is nice, there are still some things you have to tweak, but all in all it is a good ROM. I still would suggest that if you are new to rooting, you start with the basics, and then move on to testing newer things :).

Again, no offense to your post, just stating why things are the way the are :)

Sorry but in my opinion, if your savvy enough to root your phone there should be no problem implementing one or two tweaks to get a rom "complete".

flash the rom, flash the mms fix and make sure to set your voice mail number in the settings and your pretty much done. if you cant live without visual voice mail, setup google voice.

Your now running an everyday use 2.1 rom.

One would hope that most could do this, however each person's skill level is different :).

Either way, not going to turn this into a debate over which ROM to flash. Just know there are options out there and read the tutorial to learn how to Root and ROM.

Hey sorry bud didn't mean to sound like I wanna argue/debate.

Just trying to emphasize that flashing DamageControl v1 (2.1) is just as easy as flashing fresh 1.1 (1.5), just a few more steps involved. :)

No worries. I didn't take it as you arguing/debating at all :). I personally am using DC right now and like it a lot. I agree that it is easy to install, but for some reason, some people just don't understand how to flash updates.

I will be updating the tutorial with how to wipe and info on other ROM's soon. Right now though, I'm quite busy in RL to do much of anything else :)

Right now I don't have a lot of time to edit/update the guide (in the middle of a big painting project at home), so here is the short version:

To wipe boot into recovery, choose wipe and I believe the first option is factory wipe, that is what you want to do. There is another option (davlik-wipe) which can be done, but doesn't really need to be done unless mentioned in the ROM.
