So, I think I am beginning to literally go insane, you know, with all the new ROMs in development, and not having nearly enough time to test them out. So, i've come up with a decision, i am going to go into solitude, and spend about a week, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to begin testing, and writing a VERY detailed report for all 3 quattrimus builds, the cold as ice port, BACKside(after new build), and along with any other ROMs that i come across(if i have time). I'm even going to put off my life while doing so(gonna discuss my hidden nerdism with my girl-friend so she wouldn't get mad :p )
And im going to do so, after i regain service on my phone, which shouldnt be too much longer, just got a letter from Virgin Mobile saying that they will pay $10 if i pay $15 (i wonder how many times they are going to do this for me, this is the second time i've gone this long without service [2.5 months])
i havent been very active lately in the forums, due to me trying to live out in the real world(finding a job, and dealing with a relationship.) so this is my plan for "making-up" for all that lost time i could have spent at the computer, with my optimus by my side, running tests :p

I think reports like that would be awesome, and of great value to the individual devs. I admire your dedication to the community, but real life is more important. Never feel guilty about taking care of business in the real world. I have a hard time keeping up on everything I'd like to do, myself. I do alpha testing on ROMs and kernels that don't get posted (closed testing,) I'm a guide here, I run my own website and forum dedicated to themes, I work full time, and I'm raising two children (an 8 year old and a 4 month old) so I understand.

Whoa! I didn't mean to preach...

I wouldn't even bother with the AOSP version. It has no 3G. The thing that drives me totally nuts is all the Quattrimus builds have an auto market downloader that seems to download, not what you had installed on the previous ROM, but what the market thinks you had (not the same most times). I wind up with 20 plus apps I no longer want on my phone. If I could figure out what apk in the /system/app folder was responsible for this I would delete it in a heartbeat. Plus I have Link2SD and that is just not going to work.

If I remember correctly, you are able to disable that feature of the autodownload of previous apps.

Real life is more important, and there are times when I feel like just spending the entire day doing what nitestalkr is doing, but I never have the time I want. If I had an actual full day and I posted a couple guides and how-to's on the M forum, I wouldn't need my signature "If you need help (and I'm online) feel free to PM me or even invite me on gmail"
My signature would be my tutorials....

As great as in-depth reports and reviews would be, why not cherry pick a little? For instance, Quattrimus and Cold As Ice are both still in Alpha, which means your report will be outdated within a month or two. I'd hold off on going all in until everything is fleshed out and we have a complete release. Now, full reports for ROMs that are finished, and well established, would be great. Especially if you could work in comparisons. For instance: Harmonia 2 vs BACKside, from an objective standing.

Just my 2 cents.

You don't need service to play with roms, I know several people using rom'd OV's as media players and web browsers without service.

As for the value in it to the devs, most of us test/play with each others roms (we are just as curious as you guys) and communicate with each other on things. We share ideas, tips, help, etc... Despite the rivalries some users have regarding their favorite roms and developers, we actually aren't like that and will bend over backwards for each other which is why you often see us thanking each other when we post a rom, because we have all helped each other so much on things. I attribute that to why we have such a great developer community around this phone. Other phones may have more developers and more roms, but they communicate and help each other a lot less. We may have less people, but we accomplish a lot as a group.

Anyhow,
The main things I think you will find is that most IHO roms are somewhat similar, with only varying degrees of changes. All are pretty stable and relatively the same in terms of speed, reliability and performance, it mostly comes down to preference for those changes each dev makes. The two IHO roms that will differ the most will be Harmonia 2 and Backside, with Harmonia 2 being an extremely stable, barebones GB, and Backside being full Cyanogen and having everything but the kitchen sink in terms of tweaks (they couldn't be much more opposite).

Beyond that, the ICS Alphas are... alphas and will have issues. Harmonia 1 will be typical Harmonia, bland Froyo, but rock solid (with great battery life). And then you will find Gannon's roms, which will be all over the place in terms of fully working or not, with all sorts of different styles and types. This is not a rag on him, he handles a LOT of roms and does a great job juggling them. He prefers to play with many as opposed to perfecting one. Most find maintaining even one to be tough enough.

There, I just saved you a weeks worth of work. :p

Couldn't have said this any better myself :D and all of that is true. I usually update JerryScript on his BACKside thread on how its working with the Optimus M. And sometimes a problem that occurs on one of gannon's ROMs don't do it on the Optimus M because it's a kernel issue, other times the same issues happen on both phones and a fix one of us find usually works on both phones.
For example: gannon's newest MIUI 2.3.7 GB ROM will boot loop if you don't update from an older version that didn't have the loop problem, I found the fix myself and it was happening on the V and M. It fixed the problem on both phones by updating instead of new wipe, gannon posted my instructions on his OP for the ROM. This is why I'm on the V forums because we can get the same problems and usually can be solved the same way, unless it's an unbrick problem :p but even that is somewhat similar.

One of the main reasons why I'm waiting till I have service on my phone is, I can test on the go (3G and normal use with battery life) and it also gives me more time to do whatever I need/want to do before I start up my usual testing/feedback. Another reason why I want to do this, is so I can help most of the newcomers out on picking a ROM, cause you all know that they ask the most questions, and with more detailed answers, they would greatly appreciate it. I used to give great feedback on BACKside, and I'd like to continue to do so for all devs, even if it does become obsolete info a week or 2 later :p
