VK Rom - V4.8 XWLPD

Ive had a hell of a job trying to find a ics rom that i like and more importantly didnt give me issues with something but have been using this for 2 days now and so far, (touch wood), its been perfect.

Ive tried a lot of other roms, foxhound, andyx, wanamlite, cm9, dragon, omega, litening, insanity, slim and probably some others i cant remember but ive been trying them for ages. They either gave me too many freezes requiring reboots or the toggles didnt work or too many FCs or turning itself off in deepsleep or having no signal etc....

So far the only issue ive had with this one was the wifi wouldnt turn on this morning until i rebooted so ill have to look into that. But everything else has been really good. Its really fast and smooth, the graphics and theme look really good and most importantly i woke up this morning after 8 hours and it had been in 97% deep sleep and was still on 100% battery

Ive never had that before, my GB checkrom V6 usually lost 4 or 5% over night so ill be keeping an eye on this to check if that was a one off or not

So for anyone needing an ics rom that just works with good battery life id suggest giving this a go.

really liking this rom. been using it since sunday and not had any issues. Everything just works and looks good. Also combined with siyah 3.1 it doesnt lose any battery over night. Nothing, i go to bed with it on 66%, i wake up 7 hours later and its still on 66%

Yeah, this one doesn't drain battery much during sleep. I think I will keep this as my primary from for a while.

I really do think when jkay comes out this rom will give checkrom one hell of a run for its money, as this with jkay will surely take some beating.
I love many of Dragon's aokp features such as the calendar events showing in the lock screen, more configurable widgets, dynamic battery icon choice etc, but you just can't beat a sammy rom's core apps namely the callscreen, contacts, messaging and camera which always tend to make me end up back on a sammy rom. Up to now, this is the best one I've tried.

It boils down to if you prefer aokp or sammy. I would love to see a super rom that merges all the best features of both.

Vk is by far the best sammy, and dragon the best aokp I've tried, and I've tried a lot!

Will checkrom+jkay be any better than vk+jkay? This is the million dollar question. It will have a hard job.

the battery icons are cwm flashable zips arent they?

Not tried them myself, ive kept what the rom comes with

out of curiosity im dual booting this rom with an aokp rom

After a few days on this ROM I have to say, it's the best ICS one I've tried to date. I'm extremely happy with it. On Siyah 3.2.2 it is unbelievably smooth on both navigating in SPB Shell and in the Stock Browser.

I love the bundled theme, especially the animations, but I've made a few personal tweaks to the battery icon, dialer, spinners, boot animation, startup sound, gps, fonts and a few other SystemUI tweaks, so I am new 99% satisfied with this ROM.

Why not 100%? 2 reasons:
1. If this had calendar events on the lockscreen (request posted to JKay) then on Deluxe Settings, this ROM would be a blinder.
2. The theme has the same colour buttons for enabled and disabled buttons. (eg. the buttons in manage applications to clear defaults etc) I've tried on numerous occasions to tweak this without success. If anyone knows what specific png's I need to change to address this I'd be eternally grateful. In the meantime I will keep hacking!

Its basically an old GB Dialer I had but it needed a lot of tweaking to get it to work on ICS

All this ROM needs now to be perfect is JKay.
Especially if he can get the AOKP feature of bringing upcoming calendar events through to the lockscreen!

4.7.3 is now available.
Still LP9, but has a few minor tweaks, so I dont think there's enough to warrant me to go through the faff of installing again, as I'm very happy just the way I've got it set up at the moment!

Changes since 4.7.2:
• Siyah V3.2.3
• Moved toggles in Top
• Add lock Button in the notification area
• Add Screen On Toggle when receiving SMS/MMS
• Add Vibrate toggle in Messaging Settings
• Add Signature Enabled in Messaging app
• Fix Browser save for offline reading
• Move the lock screen clock at the center

I may well go into flashing retirement until checkrom pops up. I will be very interested to see which one (VK or CheckROM) comes out on top for me

I only installed 4.7.2 half an hour before this, lol.

Only issue i've found so far is that the camera app wont work Just get a message saying warning camera failed.

Anyone else had this issue/ know how to fix it?

Camera working fine for me
Did you do a full wipe?

Try going into applications and clear data for the camera app.

Yeah, I did a full wipe as I came from Dragon ROM. I've also cleared data in the app, but that didnt fix it.

I noticed on xda that one other person had the issue. He rebooted & that temporarily cleared the problem (it came back after an hour). To fix it permanently he got the apk from a different ROM and that fixed it.

I've rebooted mine and it's cleared the problem, for now. Not sure if I trust myself to rip apk's from other ROM's and install them - would prob muck it up even more

Out of interest, would I need to do a full wipe when upgrading to 4.7.3?

sticking on the same rom and firmware, a full wipe generally isnt needed.
I always prefer to do a full wipe regardless, but its up to you.

I've not had any issues at all with my camera, but if you want to use a camera.apk from another rom then it needs to be the same base (ie Samsung, not CM9/AOKP etc.) and preferably on the same firmware (ie. LP9)

If you're not into making your own flashable zip files, then probably the easiest method is to:
1. open the ROM.zip file on your pc, then navigate to /system/app
2. copy camera.apk file to your SD card.
3. in your phones file manager, navigate to where you saved it then select it
4. click install

hawker, how do you find the battery life on VK (as opposed to say checkrom)?

plus, do you have a link to the status bar battery mod you are using? i have the same one on checkrom, would love an ICS counterpart.

I've had to do a fair bit of hacking to get this battery mod to work, as the original mod (from here) for it seems to totally bugger up the status bar. So instead of installing SystemUI.apk, i've had to install it by altering the current version with the new icons.

I've managed to get it all working now except for the charging animation. Been trying for a while on this now, but failing miserably.

I'm getting more problems with this ROM. Charged my battery overnight & this morning it says it was fully charged, but only showed 84% - and was the hottest I've ever felt the phone. It's also dropped 11% battery in 1.5 hours (which is a lot worse than Dragon or D4 ROM).

The screen brightness seems to have a mind of its own also. I keep on setting it at around 10%, but it changes itself back up to about 60% :S

VK is going to be updated to 4.8 to incorporate this firmware.
Anyone contemplating installing VK, I would suggest to hang fire for a while.
