Root ZTE U960 ROM Discussion

Ok, update i've looked in to the installer, looks like the spreadstrum baseband is not included.

BTW according to the images size I'm able to understand what's the recovery image.

It's the file called G:\Program Files\ZTE\DL_U960_CMCC_CHN_EU\version\RF.ZTE so should be sufficient to replace it with the custom recovery image (recovery.img) to have the phone flashed and rootable.

You must

A) root the phone
Checked with adb root => adb is already running as root

B) check for working adb shell (there are a lot of tutorials about this)

C) flash the recovery.img (included in my rom from post #8)
to which location?

D) get in to recovery with one of the known methods: volume+ and power (remove the battery if doesen't work), quickboot from the market, the command adb reboot recovery form PC's command prompt.
Volume + and power are not working for me
if i use adb reboot recovery phone screen gets black => G3 screen => battery charging screen (phone still connected via USB cable but no more available with win-Explorer)

I did this with HUAWEI U8860 and when i do the same with this phone screen turns pink on the phone (i have to press vol +and- and power on when charging with USB) and i see a connected drive in win-explorer containing one folder "image" holding files amss.mbn, boot.img, cust.img, EMMCBOOT.MBN and recovery.img

Can i flash the recovery.img using adb push <local file> /image/recovery.img?

My rom is inside the 7zip package, you have to unpack it, you can't rename the whole 7zip to zip, and you cant use the stock updater because the signature is not from ZTE, this is the main point to have a custom recovery.

BTW, my rom is superseded from Catty's releases.
Ok, got it!

Works; had installed ETO-Version before

I don't know as apk is not able to flash it to my device...it switches off and then to battery charging screen if i leave it attached to USB or to OFF when not attached to USB

Hey guys!

I don't know why but recovery is not working for me.
I have touble to get into recovery mode. When i hold power and Volume+ button during start it shows (Original?) G3-logo and then nothing happens. Even if i continue to hold both buttons it starts(vibrate)-shows logo-black screen?-starts(vibrate)-shows logo...and so on.

I now tried to flash solutors B13 rom (renamed to update.zip) via settings/about/System updates but no luck again. It starts, reboots the phone into recovery mode (why is this working from here and not if i try to do it manually?), then i do get a screen with statements:

  1. finding update package...
  2. opening update package...
  3. verifying update package...
  4. E: signature verification failed
  5. Installation aborted.
  6. Rebooting...
And i end up with my old chinese rom which i want to replace...
download the recovery from the link below, and then unzip them to a clean foloder and then click on reco.bat to start installation of your recovery.
u960 recovery.zip - 4shared.com - online file sharing and storage - download
after this install only catthy 62 rom (U960+MOD+2B03+v1.5.0+ib_Catty)
and then your u960 work well.

If your chinese improve you can kindly translate the help file of the OneClick tool Deposit Files :D

I think that the key is to first install the usb driver which you find under the Win32Driver folder inside the Installation directory...

Currently I don't have a winxp box to try... Under win7 x86_64 it doesn't work...

I think that the key is to first install the usb driver which you find under the Win32Driver folder inside the Installation directory...

If you have join me installed the driver step can be skipped.

Anyway I decided to edit this thread to make it easier to read, and more newbie friendly.

To have the phone updated you need:

A working XP32 machine and the drivers installed (either from join me sw or the ones included on the 02b08 one click updater package)

Then :

#1 Download, decompress and install the 02b08 one click updater (archive's PW is zte_u960)
[if you need them, the older 02b06 and 02b07 versions are still available for download]

#2 replace the file RF.ZTE with the one I've uploaded here
the file location is usually C:\Program Files\ZTE\DL_U960_CMCC_CHN_EU\version\) but the location could be slightly different depending on Windows' language and drive installation.

#2b If you want the adb support in recovery you can use the newer Catty's recovery, download it here (rename recovery.img as RF.ZTE then follow the step #2 instructions)

#3 Start the update process using the previously installed updater

#4 If the process went trough correctly (dial *983*154# to check your actual version) and the phone rebooted correctly, you can turn it off and reboot it in recovery mode (turn it ON keeping the power button and Volume UP depressed) and apply the update package I prepared to get the phone rooted and gapps installed in one step.

#5 you can (optionally) flash one of the modded/overclocked 2b08 kernels i pubblished here

#5b alternatively you can flash also one of Catty's mod kernels to get the 1.4Ghz overclock and init.d function (see the linked post), are based on the old 2b06 rom, but should work w/o any problem on 02b07 and 02b08.
Is better to wipe the phone after this step to avoid market problems.

#6 If, after the flashing process, the USB function of the phone doesn't work as expected (E.g., no USB storage available), you may need to use the set mode utility to switch it back to its original behavior. (select the option on the left and confirm with the button on the left)

#6b You can get the same effect dialing *983*87274# and then selecting the first option (thanks to nothingman76, who spotted this info)

[Edit 15/05/2012]

replaced the root + gapps market package that had some problems with the market with the V2 (root + gapps/playstore), if you have already downloaded it, please redownload and reaply the update.

[Edit 10/06/2012]

Here you can find the update package to 2b07.

(It's meant to be applied via recovery after the official 2B06 process described above).

Here you can also find the 2B07 Spreadstrum baseband (SIM 1 baseband).

(it's meant to be installed via research download sw, you can find it on post #65)

[Edit 24/06/2012]

Added packages and instructions to update directly to 02b07

Adedd Catty's recovery link

some instruction's refinements

[Edit 20/07/2012]

Added packages and instructions to update directly to 02b08

[Edit 23/07/2012]

Added link to 2b08 OCed kernels.

have you tried both wipe and nowipe versions ?

I can't see any problem using the OC kernel on the older rom, BTW is better to understand why the v1.5.1 isn't working for you.

I do have the same behaviour that scooterfips describes in post #235. I am able to flash Cattys ROM 1.5.0 but not 1.5.1.

Now to better understand why this happens: How can I contribute to figure out??? If you tell me what you need from my end i will support this as far as i can.
scooterfips will be reading frequently here and in the german forum i will keep him informed about our success.

You could start to post a screenshot of the result of

*983*154# (mask the serial numbers)

to see if we can see any obvious differences.

The Solutor,

I have been able to update the baseband using a Win XP laptop. I have tried to flash 1.5.1 but still get the issue with the "white noise" screen (or mash of pixels screen) when booting. What's weird is that it looks like the phone still works (you heard sounds of booting, you can plug the USB and see connection to the computer), just the screen is fuked-up. Remember that I have been able to flash 1.5.1 by replacing the data/boot.img from Cathy's ROM 1.5.0.

See below the details of my phone:
Software version: ZTE U960 2B03 MOD Cathy V1.5.1/ZTE U960 2B03 MOD Cathy V1.5.1
U960SPV1.0.2B03/ZTE_U960_V1.0.2B03
Hardware Version: ts6c
Flash Type: Hynix/H8BCS0QE0MMR-4EM-C
Screen Type: 0x03

I've uploaded my new kernel 2B06 here with 386Mb of ram, init.d support and overclock to 1.4GHz.

and the version without overclock with 390Mb of ram here ...

Try to use it on your own risk and hazard ... as always it is ...

Hi Catty,
in order to user your kernel do I need to first install the 2B06 using the zte upgrade tool and then apply your update from the recovery ?
I'm currently using your rom 1.5.1 with the overclock and I didn't manage to run the zte oneclick upgrade tool. (I attach the phone and when a press the start button the phone simply reboot...)

Thanx!
