reasons why I should not trade in my G1 for iphone?

I dont want this to be a iphone G1 Comparison review, and I love the android concept and my G1 phone, BUT ....

Im am getting sick and tired of the non stop lag. Everything I do is lagged behind. Icons popping up, applications running and stalling. Yes I have closed everything. not sure what the point is if you have a $400 phone. Yes I have wiped the phone clean 3X. There is still 20mb left of internal memory.

My brothers iphone i used again and everything is so smooth scrolling. Everything pretty much just pops up. you can type a message or google search without the pausing wondering what you are doing. I understand this is a new OS but so was Iphone and it didnt have this much pausing and jerking around.

Please tell me reasons why I should not go out and trade my G1 for an Iphone. dont want to complain but this is ridiculous.

Hi.

I agree. I was a little disappointed with the slight lag in doing things; scrolling open the Apps drawer, switching pages in the browser... just those little fractions of a second make such a difference in the sense of quality.

But, I'm a developer. I work with developers. I can tell you with complete certainty that the lag is NOT a problem with the phone; it is problems with the applications.

That may not really matter to you, but the reason I think it's relevant is this: faster apps will eventually replace the slow ones.

The other advantages the G1 has are:
* Easy Google integration
* More application types supported (such as services)
* Easy battery replacement (if and when necessary)
* Far broader support (eventually). Android will be running on ALL sorts of devices, from phones to copiers, cars to netbooks, within a year
* Larger market of applications (not yet, not by far. But in a year or two, look out!)

Think of it this way: there was a day when PC users might have asked the same question about Mac's. Apple is using the same strategy with their iPhone as they did with their Mac's, and soon they'll be the "little guy," and we PC's (Android's) will be the in the "in" crowd.

One last comment... if you are experiencing something more than what you would call "lag," may I suggest you check out someone elses phone, or try a show model at a T-Mob store. Your phone may be damaged, and you may need a replacement.

I like the fact that it's open. I made the decision to go with an Android phone because of that fact. It was open and I wanted to get into development for it and didn't want to have to jump through hoops for the iPhone.

Android is still new and catching on and like Scott said above, as more apps get out there and it picks up steam the quality will go up. It pains me to cruise through the iTunes store (for my sons touch) and see some of the apps and games available while the Android phones are still getting started. And it pains me even more when my iPhone friends laugh at my phone since I can't even buy apps from the Android market yet...but I'm holding on with hope

Those are all good pts. keyboard, google integration, battery replacment even though the battery sucks crap.

Thanks for the insight on letting me know its not the phone but the apps. I thought that the supposedly high end processor should be fast enough.
And when you are a pc guy you think in terms of GB's when it comes to RAM not a measily 90MB. Those were the late 1980's!

Yea the marketplace needs a major overhaul. come one. not even screen shots? And the games are like early 90's video arcade gaming. I thought this was a high end phone.

ehh i agree android can be annoying at times. my g1 runs into weird restarts and bugs, but i think thats mostly because of jf1.51. applications tend to lag once in a while too, but when i overclock it seems to run a lot more smoothly. the snes emulator still lags quite a bit but ive been using a class 2 card for the past week but even with a class 6 there was significant lag. the only reason im sticking with the g1 is because of the qwerty, but as soon as a faster qwerty comes out im getting one. i will never buy an iphone, i just hate apple so much.

if i changed os's id go with the palm pre's web os.

Unless the new iPhone that has copy and paste (finally catching up to 1999 PDA's!) the iPhone does NOT multitask, it does not let more than one program run at a time -- whereas the G1 does. The lag is possibly from running a lot of background processes and apps. Download TasKiller and you should be able to see what's running in the background, causing the lags.

My phone doesn't really lag. Honestly if you're experiencing enough noticable lag, you've either got too many apps running processes in the background or there's something up with your handset.

I've limited the amount of processes that run in the background. When it DOES lag, I've noticed that the 3G/E/G icon has activity -- so something is updating -- causing the lag.

I also love the app "Memory for Lemmings" always seems to get my phone back on track when it slows down and I've killed processes and still have lag.

Honestly, since downloading TasKiller and using it to find problem apps, and removing apps that I don't need that seem to run in the background a lot, I rarely need to use Memory For Lemmings.

Widgets can cause lag, because they're the same as having an app that's always on. Even ones that aren't active. I had one of the CNN widgets, liked it at first, but then I removed it from the home screen (but didn't uninstall) doesn't matter, it was running anyway! So I uninstalled it.

And running 5 little programs i guess is a lot for android. I have taskiller and lemmings and monitor what little memory we have. Why on earth would they include so little ram for a supposedly multi tasking phone. I would expect more for paying a lot of money for it.

My lag and stalls are frequent and include simple text messaging pauses while it thinks as to what key i pressed.

Thats the plan. Love the Hero looks. as soon as it is released here in N american and has a reasonable price, I will look into getting it.

for now I have sinned and bought an Iphone. At least its a smoother interface, albeit some annoying features

The hero is not out in the U.S or Canada yet. probably not till late this year.
If you get it overseas you are paying and arm and a leg.

The magic is same as the G1. Great OS but buggy and slooooowwwwww

When that gets fixed, ill be sure to get my Hero or other android phone.

Your logic is flawed. Too much of anything is a bad idea-- that's a basic reality. That doesn't mean you can't use widgets, and I never said any such thing.

Talk to the widget developers who design them as resource hogs. Not every widget does this, the calendar widget - built in - for example, never shows up on TasKiller - it manages to always be on the screen but never comes up as a listed process. Yet that CNN widget I downloaded was running in the background even though it hadn't been added to the home screen as a widget! You get me? It's not a question of not being able to use widgets, it's a question of overdoing it, and a question of devs making resource hogging widgets. Some devs have the right idea, they're designing their apps and widgets for a phone that's going to have other apps and widgets -- in other words, they make their programs smooth, simple, and lightweight. Other devs, however, seem to be designing their apps as though no other apps or widgets exist -- or theirs is supposed to be the centerpiece of your phone.
