enjoying the ol skool music references. when EL TEvo arrives I'll drink some cherry wine ala Jermaine Stewart. ok i have a real question now that I got the nostalgia out the way...

in regard to using 3rd party launchers like Nova, I read that they have less lag and all that due to them not being as bogged down as sense. when using one, does the sense launcher just get stored as a file or something?? is it just a bigger all around size than say the nova launcher and is that why the latter is speedier and more fluid etc??? if rooted, can one simply delete the sense launcher like an app or something to gain more space on ram or whatever it's called that the oem launcher takes up space on??? TIA

SVDO technology has been around a while. In the FAQ, I have SVDO linked to the EV-DO organization (read: CDMA standards guys).

Basically, the way it works is straightforward - CDMA is already a multiplexing technology. SVDO multiplexes voice and data.

I think data will be at 1x - however - 1x is certainly part of the 3G standard. The video in the FAQ shows pings at 167 ms and download of around 700 kbps during a phone call.

Note to WifiMaxed - you posted the video here first, but couragedragon posted it on our forum first, so I had to give him credit in the FAQ. But you deserve credit for bringing it to our attention here! :)

FAQ link -

SVDO - talk and surf at the same time on 3G

We also have our own manual download there. :) ;)

Anything you cats want in the FAQ, let staff know! :)

I forgot there were different "layers" for data. That makes sense, I'll buy that for $34.95. :D

The answer requires a quick look at Sense itself.

Many people think of Sense as the launcher, maybe also the HTC widgets that only work with it.

Sense is that (launcher and unique widgets) and also a set of HTC apps that all communicate with each other, in obvious and non-obvious ways.

ICS validates the Sense approach by including many of the app connections that Sense had, but Android never did.

Think of it as people centric now - just as Sense tied People to SMS, Mail, etc, ICS does much of that now.

HTC announced that they were lightening up Sense in response to user complaints - and maybe that's true, maybe it was just marketing - because it made sense to lighten Sense to not duplicate what ICS wants to do under the hood now.

So - your questions:

First - the launcher. Some say the new Sense is so fast, replacing it will be a matter of choice. As always, that will be the target of fun, lively discussions, regardless of the version of Sense.

The Sense launcher (named Rosie) is just an app (an apk file) like most everything else in Android. Just like when you choose a new default browser and the old one stays dormant in storage - Rosie will become dormant while you use your new one.

Second - deleting Sense components. Honestly, this is usually a bad idea. System apps like to talk to each other. If you decide to make a piece of Sense dormant, and another app tries to talk to it, that app gets a signal that basically says, go away, I'm dormant, and the app carries on.

If you delete the dormant Sense component, the calling app gets no answer. So it calls again. And again. And again. Repeatedly. Wasting time, cpu, and power until it times out - and then starts in again. This will cause you to delete that app and replace it, and the problem will shift to a new component.

That will lead you to think that all of Sense is buggy, bloated and broken. And that's what people believe - to the point of thinking that Sense is worthless and can't be salvaged.

What to do. If you like other launchers and find the experience preferable, then strongly consider installing a Sense-less rom. In those, a good rom dev will not only remove Sense, but ensure that the apps are cleaned up to not wait wastefully for replies from Sense that will never come.

Does Sense come with a cpu price? Sure. All apps do. Maybe the apps you'll choose will come with less of a cpu price, maybe more. The general target for pure Android is less of a cpu price. I've noticed that with each version of Sense from 1 to 2 to 3, the cpu price seems to have gone down. They promise the same for Sense 4. But pure Android, with fewer processes, will run faster.

However - on a dual core Krait, I think we have yet to see how noticeable all that is.

~~~~~~~~~~
Is root required? No.
Just as you can use Handcent for SMS or Boat Browser as your defaults on any HTC without root, you can try different launchers, dialers, and contacts (People) apps without root.
Is Sense better? You tell me. I'm a Sense lover, and no matter what I promise myself, my screens fill with widgets, shortcuts and goodies. Then I look at my son's Samsung, configured super minimally and incredibly clean - and every time I hand him my phone back, I think often that maybe I'm just doing Android wrong. :) A clean layout is mighty nice, too.
Probably missed a good part of your questions, but I hope this helps. :)
So if our battery is not removable how are we supposed to go off the grid Hollywood Style without smashing our phone to bits?
It is essential to my Zombie Survival Plan
Surely you've heard of Will It Blend? :D
PS to 3vodroid - congrats on the gold! :) Is it just me, or is that brand new?
K, Fox is starting to SUCK. About every other commercial has been for the HTC One-X, no EVO yet but it sucks to see it all the time and just wonder when finally.
I'm thrilled they are showing HTC commercials....even if its a million times. I've noticed they are showing it alot more lately ever since this debacle. Stick it to crapple. It won't be long till we see our gem....the EVO LTE showcased.
HTC EVO 4G LTE Android & HTC Sense - YouTube
Not sure exactly what to make of it, but it's from inside sprint and looks halfway official.
And on a side note, I'm curious as to why Sprint hasn't been advertising it's SVDO ability. Seems like a good selling point.
EDIT* It appears there's a bunch more of these floating around on the insidesprint youtube page. Check em out
Awesome write up. I have to say from my experience with sense 4.0, that it is much lighter than I expected. I am a big fan so far and I wasn't a fan of sense before.
I will probably go to a senseless rom at some point, but it is keeping me happy much longer than expected (I first thought maybe a couple days, lol). My experience with it is on a One S, but I am sure that the LTEvo will be similar.
How hard can it be?
From left to right - One S, One X, Evo.
Gratuitously lmao! :rofl:
PS, yes, actual triplets. ;) :)
Oh goodness. As a guy I grin and nod (crookedly like I have game.) As a father with 1.5 daughters I am SUPER sympathetic for their father. That poor poor man.
I wonder if the new launcher will be somewhat customizable? In previous versions of sense you could pick from 2-3 different styles, I've ONLY seen one version of the new sense launcher which is of course the default.
I foresee that in a few days, I will no longer need to answer that question :)
**Fingers crossed** I hope so!!!
Actually I did really like my Hero except it didn't have enough internal storage and the silver was peeling off the power button for the 2nd time. But mostly, I just got the bug to get a new phone so I got the Shift. :thumbup:
Under settings there is a "Personalize" section. And you can pick scenes (6 options), skins (4 options), wallpaper (lots of options, including custom), lock screen style (6 options), a toggle for lock screen shortcuts, and a home screen option for the # of screens and widgets and such. This is all on the One S, but I would assume it is pretty much the same for any Sense 4.0 device (the numbers and options may differ). Most of the options don't change the overall style a lot, but I bet some smart folks can make new ones for this stuff. ;)
Yes sir it is :D..... And on a side note those " will it blend " videos are hilarious. Have you seen the one when he blends the ipad? I can't help but watch It over.... And over and over and...
you sound like you are a seasoned non sense user. care to recommend a basic, fully functional, stable senseless rom for me to try for the first time? I'm not new to rooting and roms in general, I've just never tried going senseless. seems like a good time to try with EL TEvo in route, 3vo getting passed down, and OGEvo about to join the best buy family...sorry if too off topic
I don't know what ROMs will be available for your device (so I can't be specific), but I assume CM9 will be available before too long and that is always nice. I bet there will be a couple different flavors of that and other AOSP based ROMs.
I hate recommending ROMs for folks, it's something you just need to try out and see if it fits what you like. I am sure once it's released and had a bit of time to get the ROMs worked on, you will have plenty of options and the fine folks here can guide you to something you'll like better than I could. ;)
Thanks for the info, do you happen to know if any of the launchers differ in appearance than the default by much? I've seen a One S in person but haven't got to play with one much yet.
