New phone: Galaxy Nexus or EVO 4g LTE

Good morning all, Its finally time to upgrade from my evo 4g. I have always loved HTC's Devices. But now, I'm due for an upgrade with sprint and im not sure which way to go here. I was going to go with the EVO 4G LTE but it has been delayed, so next best thing was the Galaxy Nexus. Just looking for some advice here. Should i wait for the LTE or go with the Nexus? I get 4g in my area but my current evo just stays on 3g and wifi when I'm home. Searching for 4g with the EVO seems to drain the battery (surprise), so im sure ill never have 4g LTE in my area, Meriden, CT. Please discuss!! Thanks!

I love my Nexus (Verizon) and wouldn't trade it for any other phone currently on the market or coming out over the next half of the year. The screen is amazing. Battery life is ok, as good or better than what you'll get with the EVO LTE. Ice cream sandwich is very nice. Some complain of poor reception but I get as good reception as any other phone I've owned, if not better.

simplest explanation, it's a newer phone and technology moves fast. just because it recently came out w/ sprint doesn't mean it is new, it's been out. the htc evo 4g lte and the htc one x are more recent.

they're the same price. the evo has a better processor, bigger battery, the kickstand, sense ui (that's a preference but i like sense ui over the other interfaces available), beats audio, hd voice (won't' be able to take advantage of that for now but you'll be ready), the kickstand.

the biggest difference is the camera however. the onex/evo4glte camera is amazing. from what i hear people are disappointed with the nexus camera and my roommate has one and it doesn't seem very special (i like the way my pictures come out on my original evo better). besides more megapixels (which are just a small part of the things to consider in a camera) it has a better light sensor and chip, could handle low lighting better than other phone cameras available, and can shoot hd video and photos simultaneously.

like i said. same price... no contest. the nexus is a good phone but it's no evo.

Both are good phones in their own right, it just depends on what you want and like. The Nexus is also fairly new to Sprint. If you want the pure Android experience with no bloatware then the Nexus is what you want. If you want a dedicated camera button, bigger battery and micro sd card access go EVO 4G LTE.

You mentioned kickstand twice...anywho.... TI OMAP 4460 1.5GHz vs S4 Snapdragon 1.5GHz...I wouldn't say either is superior. Each are good at different things.

My Nexus has a bigger battery than the EVO 4G LTE. 2150 mAh. It is the extended battery but it is factory from Samsung. Also, I understand the EVO battery is non-removable. That's an issue for some folks (not for me, but it is for some, I'm personally for designing batteries bigger and as part of the phone).

Sense, yes, it's a preference. I like it (Wife has a Rezound and had an Eris before) but I prefer vanilla Android. I flash custom ROMs quite a bit and did with my OG Droid.

beats audio, HD voice

Beats audio is nothing more than a pre-tuned EQ and the Nexus has EQ settings as well. Now that they don't come with Beats headphones/earbuds so you've got nothing there. HD Voice?? Really not sure what that even means and I'm a techie. Companies add HD to anything now because it's a buzzword for high quality, really doesn't mean a lot unless there's a spec behind it. I'll assume it means HD voice call quality which is not a standard as far as I know so as you said, can't be used.

The One X takes better low light pictures because of its f/2.0 aperture which is slightly better than the f/2.8 of the Nexus. HOWEVER, it is not because of a backlit sensor of the One X because both have backlit sensors. Anything above 5MP on a phone is moot because you're pushing the limits of such a small sensor with that many pixels. Diminishing returns really kicks in around 5MP. Both cameras also shoot still pics while shooting HD video at the same time. Really, the One X camera is nice, but so is the Nexus. If you know what you're doing you can take great pics with either.

Just wanted to set the record straight. The One X is a great phone but so is the Nexus. Don't let people tell you otherwise because "it's already been out since December". There's not a phone on the market or coming this year that I would trade my Nexus for and there one HUGE reason for that. It's vanilla Android and is easily unlockable, rootable, and because of this there is tons of dev support and customized ROMs available.

also, the LTEVO will use a second microphone for noise cancelling to provide clearer voice.

as for the processor, sprint's galaxy nexus has a 1.2 ghz Sprint Galaxy Nexus specs | Android Central although i agree most people won't tell the difference between these two very capable phones' processors. (LTEVO wins though!)

as for the camera, i forgot about the dedicated camera button, which is nice. HTC has really pushed the camera on the OneX/LTEvo (only LTEVO has the dedicated button) as a selling point. Like I also admitted, megapixels have little do with it. But, the LTEvo camera will undoubtedly trump the Nexus camera. While the LTEvo camera is doing amazing in reviews, I seem to remember a general feeling of disappointment in the Nexus camera (too lazy to find sources, so take that as you please). I do, however, maintain that i often prefer pics from my OG evo over my roommate's Verizon Galaxy Nexus.

Oh and did I mention the kickstand?

Oh boy, head spinning. I do prefer a more pure aneroid experience. However I have always loved htcs devices.
Kickstand is nice,better camera is nice. Sense, I'm not really sure what that does for me . What is the bloatware that's found on the evo and how is the nexus more pure?

Even though I agree that the Galaxy Nexus is a great phone, I have serious disagreement with some of your points:
1. TI 4460 vs Snapdragon S4: If you are a techie, you should already know that S4 is superior to OMAP 4 in every way imaginable (performance, power consumption, etc...). Before the introduction of the Galaxy S3, the S4 and Tegra 3 were kings of Android. In fact, when the Galaxy Nexus was first introduced, the major disappointment with it was the lousy SoC (TI OMAP 4460) compared to Samsung Exynos in the Galaxy S2. Games like Modern Combat 3 should show you where the OMAP 4 shows its age. Or you can try watching 1080p h.264 high profile videos on your Nexus, you will see how laggy it becomes (or try to play youtube full HD desktop site on the Galaxy Nexus). Please give me one reason why OMAP 4460 is better, because I don't think there is one.
2. Screen: Please put the Galaxy Nexus side by side with the One X/ EVO 4G LTE. The screen on the One X is among the best I have ever seen, and it is definitely better than the Nexus (Pentile screen is a major no-no).
3. Camera: I agree with you that mega pixels don't mean much, but the sensor is where it matters. The camera on the One X is clearly the better one.

To be honest, unless someone wants pure Android experience, I don't think there are a lot of reasons for me to recommend the Galaxy Nexus right now.

I'm wondering how you came to the conclusion that the Nexus battery life is as good or better than EVO LTE, when

1) There's no indication you've owned the EVO LTE
2) You come across as a fanatical fanboy

Ok, this is my second time having to reply due to a messed up internet connection losing my first one. All I was doing in my post was pointing out some flaws in the reply saying there was no competition between the two because there is, in fact, some serious competition between them. Yes there are aspects where the Evo wins, but there are also aspects the Nexus wins. The OP needs all of the info, not just info from Evo fans. HTC makes great products. My wife owns one herself and I enjoy using it some. I just prefer my Nexus. You will not notice a huge performance gap between the two as some have suggested. I've also heard the pentile arguement time and again, but this really is the best screen out there, especially for videos and gaming. I've followed the Nexus from initial announcement and heard all the groanings when it was discovered the screen was pentile. You don't hear those now.

To me this boils down to do you want Sense or not.

The EVO 4G LTE annoys me to no end just because it is neither 4G, nor LTE. It has an LTE radio of course, but Sprint does not have LTE anywhere and won't for close to another year. So it's not really LTE. This means it works on Sprint's current 4G HSPA+ network right? Wrong. It doesn't have an HSPA+ radio. It only runs on 3G. Despite the fact it only runs on 3G, they still bill it as 4G LTE which annoys the piss out of me and I'm shocked they don't get sued for such blatantly false advertising.

I"m sure the phone is an awesome 3G phone. It just ticks me off that they advertise it as a 4G LTE phone when it's really neither.

I'm trying to hold out for the evo lte.... But my current evo is giving me serious issues right now. Won't charge, slow as hell, when it does charge it's at a rate of 1% per half hour. Cameras interface is completely white, so no pictures. It's breaking in half, I need this release asap or I am going to be forced into the samsung

Sorry to bump this thread gain but..... What is meant by a more pure android experience? What does htc sense do for me? And if the evo gets rooted, is htc sense removed anyway?

Are you somebody who plans on customizing your phone past launchers, do you want future updates out fast (either by ROM or official OEM released), and stock ICS? If so, go GNex.

Are you somebody who wants a kickstand (available in certain cases for the GNex btw), sense4, and a camera that works well in low lights? If so, go EVO 4G LTE

PS: A pure android experience refers to the way that Google intends Android to be on a phone-- currently the only phone running 100% pure ICS that I'm assuming you would consider is the Galaxy Nexus.

Honestly, the major deciding factor is Sense4 vs Stock ICS, at least IMO.

I ended up getting the EVO saturday. It wasn't easy, I had to threaten sprint I would cancel my service if they didn't move my contract renewal date to 6/2 (paid a $45 early upgrade fee). I went with the HTC because the last time I didn't I was surely sorry. (g1 to the Motorola cliq) big mistake. I might root this one in time, not sure, the last time I did on the reg EVO I had all sorts of problems with gmail, voicemail, phone would only ring 1-3 times. It was more of a hassle just to broadcast WiFi for free...

Fully agree with you there. Sprint really jumped the shark on their LTE network. However, the Nexus is in the same boat...
