I am just curious to know if you rooters have had issues (not that us early 2.1 loaders arent). this is really sick and sad but, the more problems you guys have the better i`ll feel :(
so far i know you cannot overclock (haha) no navigation (haha) and its a mess to sync (nananana!).
is that all?

AND FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THINGS HOLY CAN SOMEONE FIND A WAY FOR US 2.1 LOADERS TO GET ROOT!

side note, windows phone seven series cannot download apps outside of the market, cannot replace SD card, cannot multitask and is basically a MICROSOFT verison of the Iphone....so im with android forever!
DRROIIIDD!!!

We have navigation, you just have to do a little workaround to get it working.

I haven't had any syncing issues, what issues have you heard with syncing?

Google Maps won't update to the latest version in the market place.

I haven't had any other issues so far.

HAHA! :)
no but cool.
ok...i also want to know so that if 2.1 (the leak) gets rooted what to expect.
but nonetheless NANANANAN! :)

No, you can't overclock yet. It's not built into the kernal to exceed 528Mhz. This will come in a future rom though.

Okay...that's along the lines of what I was thinking. It looks like root has been accomplished but now the task of putting the extra stuff on there is going to take a little time.

So I have a question about the root process. You were able to put an unsigned 2.1 on the phone so does this mean that with future updates and such, you have to find an exploit in each updated image (signed) in order to add updates to the previous rooted image?

I'm not trying to find fault because I really don't care. I'm enjoying my 2.1, root would be nice but since I'm not running out of room yet its no biggie to me, I'd just like a way to get rid of the bloat if/when necessary. Overclocking and stuff like that don't interest me on the Eris, if I wanted the biggest/baddest phone I wouldnt have this one ;)

I would like to know the differences though just because I could still root the wife's phone and give her my leaked 2.1 if there was some major advantage. I like to hack and play but so far I'm still learning android so its all new to me anyway.

So...no ill feelings here, just curious. And thanks to the folks that have the time to work on this stuff for the rest of us. I hope you all don't get discouraged by the I want it now now now now folks!

Once the phone is rooted that's it. The devs won't have to find exploits in future Android OS releases. Android is open source, so when a new verzion is released, they can cook up a rom based on the new version that works with our phone, and it can be installed on a rooted phone easily.

Well, the main advantage is that typically custom rom's run better than official releases. Devs can remove unneeded crap, optimize them, etc. Everything on the phone can be customized, including boot screens, etc. You can do full backups of your phone, tether over wifi, etc.

Currently there isn't really any advantage in rooting your phone unless you have the knowledge to manually do stuff via the console. Unless you're knowledgeable in linux, I'd wait on the rooting until more stuff is polished a bit, roms are cooked up, etc.

Okay...so why don't you guys just put the leaked 2.1 over 1.5 instead of the older release that you are using? Oh...and one more question. :) Android is open source but Sense isn't right? So if sense is closed does that mean we will be without sense in rooted versions?

GrdLock...just to clarify...I know that rooting 2.1 leaked has not been done yet but what I'm asking is for the simplified version of why you can't put leaked 2.1 over 1.5 instead of the older version that you guys are using. I know that it's been tried but just want to know the why of it in a non-dev language.

The leaked 2.1 has a higher software version than the Rooted 2.1 which has a lower software version number. and thus the leaked version wont let the rooted install because it thinks you're "downgrading".

No, 2.1 was rooted. But it's an earlier build of 2.1 than the previously leaked 2.1.

Look at it this way.

rooted 2.1 = 2.1a
leaked 2.1 = 2.1b

You can go from 1.5 to 2.1a or 1.5 to 2.1b or 2.1a to 2.1b, but you can't go from 2.1b to 2.1a or 1.5 or from 2.1a to 1.5.

If that makes sense raise your hand. :)

So if 2.1a was rooted then theoretically root for 2.1b would...oh wait. Ya. I think. ..... Be soon to follow? And maybe we would just have to root the phone. And install the rom that is still on my sd card?

Did that make any sense?

What likely happened is HTC patched the flaw or exploit in the 2.1 version these guys are using.

this. The rooted 2.1 has an older kernel than the original leak which means the original leak is actually a newer build. The original leak had a few exploits patched that the rooted version didnt. This is also why you cant get root on the original leak because it would require a downgrade.

Soooo...just had this thought and it's probably been asked a gazillion times but how does it work if your rooted when the OTA comes out? If you install you lose root, or keep it? And since its probably safe to assume that the OTA will be newer than the leak and the root (2.1c as it were) will it now be "easier" to root the OTA version somehow or use whats in it with the rooted version?
I'm not looking for someone to give me the whole technical briefing or anything I'll try to read when I have time, just wondering if once the OTA flies what happens to the rooted folks and if leakers will see any benefit.
