That's interesting... According to Android Central's article last week, the Nexus One was "confirmed" to only be available from Google, so why would they be shipping them to Verizon?

Someone doesn't have their facts straight, just wish I knew who ;-)

My biggest concern now is... my NE2 isn't up until July. When the Droid released, VZW sent me an early upgrade invitation on any smart phone. If it does wind up being true that you have to order through Google... will I still be able to get it a couple of months before my NE2 is officially up?

My wife and I are in a similar situation as our plan is up in July but we are eligible for an early upgrade tomorrow. I just called customer service and asked them the question posed above. The CS rep could not verify a release date for the phone but did say that Verizon currently does not have any phones that they support on their network that they do not offer the same pricing plans and early upgrades for.

According to her, she believed that we would be able to get the subsidized phones early on the family shared plan. This is obviously just more speculation but I think that her guess is better than mine.

Either way (subsidized or not), I will be purchasing two Verizon N1s on release day!

If google wants to hurt apple they need to sell the nexus in the actually stores. The common person will not know or want to order the nexus if its not in the store.

I'm not sure what to think about the sales issue. I spoke to three store managers where I am (which is Lubbock, TX not the mecca of technology). One was sure it would be sold in stores. The other two were not as sure but couldn't see any reason as to why it would not be sold in stores. One of them provided me their information and I will keep contacting him. He said that he would be able to tell me if they are selling in stores a few days before it launches since he will know for stocking/shipping issues. So, per the rumored release on the 23rd, I will be calling everyday starting on the 20th. I'll post anything I know. I encourage others to do the same to see if we can nail down more info.

Two points,

1) The initial news outlet was incorrect about the shipment to Verizon, later reports have corrected this by stating HTC shipments to Google for the Verizon compatible phone.

2) I see no reason why Verizon would carry it in stores, unless they arranged for a demo/display model with Google. For training or marketing, whatever. The phone will be sold online just like Tmob and now Att. If there is a decent argument the other way, i'd like to hear it. Up until now, I've just heard wishful nonsense.

It should also be noted to those still holding out for nexus one in verizon stores, that would completely destroy the market for the Incredible. Do the logic....

.....same reason the N1 is not appearing in Att/Tmob stores. That shelf space is reserved for the HTC Desire. Google's strategy is clear now, they want to control the full Android user experience thru their N1, but allowing HTC to partner with carriers to pimp out Android on N1 "cousin" handsets. Apple is ****ed.

Give Verizon a call .... they might give you a service credit. It was offered to me when I disclosed to them my pkans to get a Nexus One on Verizon.

Exactly. It's impossible to make any definitive statement at this point one way or the other because nothing is official.

the Nexus is not meant for the common person or the average joe... that's the beauty of it... it's a showcase device for the latest Android OS and apps.... if VZ wants an in store Android HTC device, it will be the Desire or the Incredible...

That's like the equation for failure. It should be approachable and it really is--the Android platform--so there is no reason for Google wanting it to be a failure of a device.

No, this strategy will be a resounding success. 18 months from now, Android will have taken most of RIM's market share and will present Apple with a infinate army of foes. As stated earlier, N1 is not a consumer phone, Google doesn't care if they undersell analyst estimates. They only care that Android gets exposed to the consumer market. That is precisely what is happening, I can't even count how many android phone's (including N1 cousins Incredible, Desire, Supersonic) will be available by the end of 2010. On top of that, N1 is being offered to all major European and US markets via Google. Yesterday Att, today Sprint, next week Verizon.

Apple has no place to go, because they have cornered themselves into fantasyland. No matter how superb Iphone iterations become, Android will ultimately outpace Iphone OS in the consumer market because of Google's determined effort to keep their offerings open and free to the marketplace and developers.

I have been critical of Google for their introduction of N1, it was pathetic by many standards. But they have learned a great lesson and as usual will recover quickly. That is SOP in Mountain View, learn thru iteration.
