Help Internal storage discussion (apps, errors)

lets see if i can translate it...
using what I know about OG evo and how it worked. (this is different because the added 16GB of builtin memory storage)

there are 4 areas for apps...(note: IS, ES, SS are initials created by me for this post only)
- internal storage (IS) - where apps are originally installed. 2GB area
- external storage (ES) - where user created data is stored (MP3 + photos). 9GB area
- SD card storage (SS) - the physical SD card you put into the phone.
- RAM is 1GB and totally separate from the rest. this is where programs are processed/running/sitting in background. RAM is faster than storage memory (IS, ES, SS)

IS and ES is part of the 16GB of built-in .. other parts of the 16GB is used by Android.
SD is like another harddrive in your computer. where you can save your created files and data.

when you install an app.. it goes directly into the IS area.
when you use Apps2sd, it moves part of the app to the ES area.
example: with Netflix, you are moving most of the 26mb of app to the ES; and only leaving 1.06mb in the IS.

android will let you know if you can move part of the app to ES..
if it can not be moved; android will not even give you an option to move..
NOTE: apps with widgets.. the widgets may not work so well if they are moved. so i normally just leave them in IS area.

hope i am right.. and this makes sense.

RAM and IS are not the same. 2gb for apps and 9gb es (as u term it) are part of the 16gb storage.

From what I remember, there's 1gb of RAM. That's where the memory running apps and functions on the phone are stored. RAM is not associatedwith storage...ever.

Ok I think I found something. I downloaded astro file manager. Went to manage my files. I also had live365 and dogg catcher downloaded. Now when you go to manage my files at top and below home, up, mul it shows /mnt/sdcard...this is the phone storage. So I long pressed on live365 and a menu came up with copy, move, rename, delete. I selected move. Then at top now shows paste.

I hit up 2x and selected sdcard2 (this is your micro sd card) this where I moved my musi from the laptop and any pics I took are stored to...again this is the micro sd card and I hit paste and presto. These 2 apps are now on the micro sd card.

Please someone else confirm, but this is not a root. I was trying to move google ske map, but couldn't find the file as I did not have enough time.

Hope this helps.

OK. You copied apps to the external sd card.

Do you find that Android will execute those copies?

/mnt/sdcard is the unix mount point for the sdcard partition of internal phone storage.

Not copied but moved it and I did try live365 and presto...worked. So I don't think a root is needed, just to know exactly where the app is.

But again someone else please confirm.

When you say that you tried running it from the external sd card, do you mean that you navigated to it on Astro, and clicked on it?

If not, reboot and give it a try.

No the icon is still on the phone. But where it is actually stored and running from is the sd card. Only thing I did with astro is move it from phone storage to the actual sd card.

So where things are normally stored either internal or phone storage, live365 is now stored on and running from the actual ad card. Just like if you moved an mp3 file to the ad card from the pc. Your playing that song from the sd card. Same thing.

I was able to move live365 from phone storage to the sd card. I even restarted and went back to astro and deleted it from the phone storage and it's not there. Live365 plays like it should.micon is still there. I restarted 2x.

No by clicking on the app on the actual phone.

Yeah. I know.

Ok, maybe we can clear this up if you do this -

In Astro, go to that apk file on your external sd card. Long press it (I think that's how Astro works) and choose the option to rename it.

Change the name so that instead of ending in .apk you have it end in apk.sav - because .sav files cannot execute.

Reboot phone. Try to run the app, report back.

I give up. Lol seems when I pressed the app on the phone, it put files back to sd card 1 (phone storage). It's not even showing the .apk,. Sorry about all the back and forth. I'm trying though.:(

No, it's all good. I have a healthy skepticism, but if you've found some weird workaround, it's good to know.

If you're not discouraged, suggest repeating the whole thing again, including the name change as the final step, using EStrongs File Explorer.

The more they fix Astro, the more I hate it - and it used to be fabulous. :(

I fully understand it now but I thought when I went to move Netflix just to test it with App2SD it said it only moved 1.06 and left the rest so I moved it back. But your saying it moved 20 something and left the 1.06 on the 2 gig storage. Cause when I tried it and went o what is on sd card which I know is the internal 9 gigs it said Netflix 1.09 like it didn't move much at all and I thought that's not moving hardly anything so I put it back to phone. Maybe I didn't look right I'll try it again. But I understand the storage now.

I searched and could not find an answer to this:

On this phone you have the option to move your Apps to phone storage. Will doing this cause slower loading times like it used to on phones that allowed you move a portion if the space used by apps to the sd card? What are the disadvantages to moving your apps to.phone storage?

Thanks

bluegold,

moved your question here since its in line with the discussions going on. i would also suggest you smoke over this thread and read on on the storage functions being discussed.

Android has made this possible since froyo or gingerbread, so other android handsets can have apps moved to different storage.

you will not notice any lag by moving apps to different storage on the device.

the advantages of moving this is to free up phone memory.

Thanks for moving the post.

So we are sure that moving the apps to the phone storage won't slow down the opening and operating speed of the app?

I know this was a concern when moving apps to the sd with the original EVO...hence a bunch of people over at XDA were using class 10 sd cards.

The Evo apps2sd was using a physical SD card.

The internal storage being used here is on the same memory chip that the app was originally located on, simply in a partition that's formatted VFAT, just like a physical SD card.

In simple terms - the onboard memory access is likely to meet or exceed any Class 10 card experience you've had.

I thought this phone was advertised as a 16 gb phone, but I don't see where it says that anywhere on the device. Am I missing something??

Well advertised space is never the actual space. Having said that, if you go to Storage you will see 2.09GB of space is allocated for internal storage for apps only. Then you will see 9.93GB of space is allocated for Phone Storage that we can use for anything. That is a total of 12.02GB..... the rest is not user accessible and is used for the OS, HTC Sense, etc.

I got the Evo LTE from the Evo 4G yesterday and realized it didn't come with an SD card because it has space for internal storage. I'm a bit confused though, how do I know what is on the phone and what's on my SD card (I have the 8 GB that came with my original Evo.)... if I would reset to factory settings would I lose everything stored on my phone (pictures, videos, music.).. will everything show up the same on my phone if I have the files split from internal storage on my phone and an SD card? Sorry for all the questions just wondering how this works before I start putting stuff on it, which I'm really eager to do.

If you have the SD card in the phone and hook it up to computer via usb and select media storage it will seperate out the SD card and internal storage so you can see both and know whats in them.

One thing that I like a lot about the internal storage is that when I flash different ROMS ( equivalent to a factory reset for the non-rooted users) it saves my game data on the internal drive whereas I would lose it if I had the EVO 4G.

(Games like NBA Jam where you have to download 300mb+ after you install it)

You will not lose anything stored on the internal drive when you do a factory reset. This includes pictures. When you put the SD card in it will ask you if where you want to store photos
