Root HTC Evo with No Sprint Service

Hi,
I have no Sprint service. But I want to make it work with WIFI only.
However Sprint disables that and it requires a Sprint plan even though it has WIFI capabilities.
If I root it, will that enable it to work via WIFI? Or does it need an Unlock also?

What can I do to make it work with WIFI only? I don't want a Sprint plan right now. Thanks.

I bought an EVO and don't plan to activate it with Sprint. The phone has so many other features (camera, music, wifi, large screen, etc...) that you don't need to be a slave to a plan to get use out of it. It's baffling to the community here. If I didn't work from home and lived in a rural area, I would need a plan. But I understand we're in the .5% and the other 99.5% users have a Sprint account.

My wifi works without any problems both in Brooklyn where I live and in Manhattan. I was amazed that I was able to walk several blocks listening to Pandora without any interruptions and have access to many free wifi spots. I'm using a local connection for wi-fi at home to play with and I've downloaded a number of apps. I'm also able to sync with my google accounts and download messages automatically if I choose.

So you shouldn't be blocked by Sprint if I'm understanding your situation. Next, for me is finding a sip provider so I can make and receive the occasional calls and also text when in Manhattan. Other than that, I work from home and have no need for a plan.

Check your wifi settings and make sure they're turned on when you need them. It will check to see which networks are available if any in your range. I have not rooted my phone but did download the fix sent in late June once they re-released it. I've not rooted the phone either although I might do it to get better battery life and get rid of the Sprint apps I have no use for, like Nascar, Sprint Zone, and whatever else they think I should need. Hope this helps.:)

Hello,

I am a new user here. I came across it looking for something related to the WiFi question with no service. I was a customer. But I am out or work so long that my bill went to collection. I have been able to use my HTC EVO 4G device on any WiFi with no problem and get a lot of use out of it that way.

Last night I was researching on other things I could do. I found out about the Tethering which at one time I paid for. An Rooting with Gingerbread which I did.

I am picking up the project with fresh eyes today.

I was able to connect my EVO to my PC but not to the internet. I am wondering if it is because of my account being closed. I have only tried on this machine which has a funky WifI card that could be it.

Anyways my next questions get a little deeper. I understand what a ROM is I think but why should I get one? What does it do? Speed the processor? What is overclocking GAH?! So many questions I will make it all simple.

If you had my phone what would you do with it to getthe best use out of it. My only thought was to buy a stupid Hot Spot device to carry around.

Thansk In Advance,

Thansk In Advance,

well first off can you connect to the internet? i think with your account being closed that you probably only use your evo when you have wifi so not sure if tethering without wifi will work.

and roms are the os for the phone. it is like running windows 7 or a mac os like snow leopard. there are two types of roms aosp and sense.

sense roms have the sense launcher on top of the android os. most ofthe popular sense roms have sense 2.1 and sense 3.0 (there are roms in beta right now that have sense 3.5). our evos will never get past sense 1.0, but the devs have found a way to make it happen for us.

aosp stands for android open source project. these roms do not have sense cooked in. they are pure android. they tend to be smaller in size compared to sense which is huge and takes up a lot of room. aosp roms perform better and tend to give better battery life.

so trying out a rom is up to you. you can always make a nandroid backup and try them out. there is a sticky at the top of this forum that has all the current roms to date. check the out.

You can open WiFi on any android device no carrier needed.. make sure you go to home>menu>settings>wireless & networks and check on Wi-Fi.
Then right below that is Wi-Fi settings, click on it and you will see available networks. Sounds basic but I know a lot of people who do not know this!
You can also download Skype or other voip and use on the Evo! Free # and voicemail w google voice even!

I have a brand new EVO that is unactivated that I rooted, but I connected via wifi no problems, synced my contacts with Google and cruised around on the net. pulled the battery and back in the box it went for safe keeping, never thought about the Skype deal, going to have to give that a try too! Having some surgery next Friday, will be off about 3 weeks, so I know what I'll be spending my time on while its cold and snowy outside and I'm out of work for a while! (Damn, and I was scheduled to work Xmas too!) you guys will be sick of seeing me on here when this is all said and done!:)

This is not working! I just got the EVO LTE and gave my daughter my old EVO 4G for all of the above purposes (wifi use basically), but it won't connect to wifi. I have a router at home and it says it is out of range when I'm sitting right next to it. The 4G also won't pick up wifi on public networks. Any advice?

The 4g is never going to work without sprint service. If you answer the above post we should be able to get you squared away

This is NOT true! My daughter got an htc evo from her aunt just to use for internet and she has 4g all the time!

The thing I need to know is since the phone has no contract/service how do we update it to the newest version of android?? is there anyway??

She uses this phone for everything except calling. There is a free texting app, and the google market works as long as she is connected to wi fi

i have an og evo that is no longer activated and i can only get internet via wifi, so if you do not have a contract then you should not get any mobile date (3g) let alone a 4g signal.......you might want to contact sprint to see if you have actually cancelled the service before getting charged for it.

and once again is the phone rooted?

Can some please tell me...
How in the world my deactivated Boost Mobile phone is connected to Sprints 4G?
I thought I had soft bricked my ZTE Force, so I switched my account to another phone. Today, I was just playing around, trying to figure out how to fix my ZTE. Even though it is deactivated, I started the hands free activation... Next thing I knew it was connected to Sprint server with a funky numeric user name @hcm.sprintpcs.com and the MDN & MSID are identical numbers (when it was on boost, the MDN was my phone number, now they are 4 numbers). The phone kept trying to go through the activation process, but I stopped it in the middle. Yes, it has been rooted but messed it up when I flashed the wrong google package to it, I could get 3G, no 4G, and could not make, send, or receive calls or texts. I did flash the stock ROM back on it. I tried everything I could thing of, find on the web, and entered # codes to try to fix it. All I wanted to do was, be able to have it as a HotSpot for netflix... It is doing that now. I really didn't know what I was doing, before the bad flash or with the deactivated ZTE to get to where it is now.
So, now I have a deactivated Boost Mobile ZTE that is connected to Sprint 4G.
Can someone please tell me.. How is this possible? Free 4G
