Galaxy note UK ICS update available now!

Actually, things seem to have become smoother since just after the update completed. Maybe things were still going on in the background and have now finished.

But I sense that some of you have the same customised home screens? My home screens were replaced with default ones - all of them?

Ian

yes i did find all t/wiz home screens where returned to normal but all my custom ones were in go launcher ex and that wasnt touched so quick press on home button go launcher ex selected then ooooosssshh back to how it was but better (even though i have now moved to nova for ics).

did you find the photo unlocker ????? if not it is in settings/security/screen lock then select face unlock and it will go through setting it up

Regards

I use GoLauncherEx and everything is exactly as it was except for 4 icons which had defaulted to the Android logo (Phone, contacts, YouTube and MusicPlayer). I just copied them back over from the app drawer and they're fine. I just checked the standard launcher and yes, everything has defaulted to 'out of the box' settings (i.e. bloody awful). The OCD side of me is now going to reorganise it even though I'll never use it. Now I know it's there I can't leave it alone!

I've also noticed (as someone else has mentioned) that the screen does look sharper when viewing text. I'm guessing they've tidied up the fonts a little.

Question - I'm on the downloading progress screen, it's been sat at 100% now for about ten minutes, does that sound right? I'm not going to do anything hasty like disconnect but it's troubling that it appears to have froze.

Edit: Scratch that, the moment I completed the post it stirred into action :)

I usually turn my screen animations off, but where the update has resetted my settings etc, i cant for the life of me find it. it was usually in settings>display

Hi
the nearest i can find to answer your question is...settings/developer options/window animation scale.....set to off.
not sure if this is the same thing but its all i could find.

Just upgraded mine via Kies. Went perfectly! All apps there, all the screens exactly as they were. And I am very happy to report that the phone is as smooth as silk! Exactly what has been missing from my Note is now there - smoothness! It's no longer stuttering when scrolling through contacts, apps respond when the button is pressed (not three seconds after it's pressed), and GoLauncher animations are silky smooth just like they were on my S2. I am one very happy bunny!

On your observation on go launcher being much smoother, I've gone back to using it and it is great.

Yeah, I can only assume that ICS allows GoLauncher to use hardware acceleration so the gfx are nice and smooth now. I've tried video playback using MX Player Pro and things definitely seem less patchy/blocky. I've tried several vids (I've got 65 films and 3 tv series on my sd card) and the big dark blocks seem to have gone.

Bah, first attempt to update failed utterly. Hung on the preparing to install screen for aaaages, phone was fully functional while still connected so I had to bite the bullet and disconnect.

Phone is fine, downloading the update again now, fingers crossed it works, that first experience wasn't pleasant.

Hmmm... was just preparing to update but now I'm not so sure. If the only noticeable difference is worse battery life maybe I should stick with GB (silky smooth for me already).

A friend advised me not to upgrade to as he had a similar experience with his SII (severely diminished battery life).

*Edit - I should say most of the battery life complaints are in the other thread.

Improvements I've noticed in the teeny time I've used it;

Gmail looks ace.

AT LAST! Delayed locking (eg PIN unlock, 10 minutes after sleep). No longer have to rely on occasionally flakey 3rd part app.

Chrome! Enough said.

One handed operation on dialer, amongst other things.

Generally, it all feels far more polished than GB. I was expecting to not be impressed, but I definitely like what I see thus far. Plus this all before I try Nova/Apex.

Another immediately impressive improvement is the text input and editing. Especially on Web pages. With Gingerbread the cursor would frequently go off the edge of the screen and the cursor control aids would disconnect from the cursor's position. That does seem to have been fixed now. Also placing the cursor at the end of a sentence no longer stubbornly selects the last word. Copy and paste works much better too. I wouldn't say it is now perfect but it is much much better than before. You can now resize the text you are editing more directly, too.

Ian

PS I exclusively use the Swype keyboard.

Ooh yeah, just tried it, much improved.

Encountered my first bug - setting a delayed pin lock after sleep, 10 minutes for example, has stopped working. Now it's asking for pin every time. Tried a reboot but to no avail. Annoying, as this was a major omission from GB TouchWiz, shame that the option is now there but it fails to work, hmm.

Actually, it's weird. If the screen goes off by itself, say after 2 minutes, it doesn't ask for a pin immediately after when you try to resume from sleep. If you put it to sleep yourself, it DOES ask for a pin next time. Bizarre.

I think this is logical - if the screen times out, you may want to get back in with minimal delay. If you press the power button to shut off the display, that's a conscious action by you so the security should be activated. I'm happy with that.

You installed Kies on your PC, right? Plug your Note into the USB port and it should be self-explanatory. Just follow the instructions.

You might need to disconnect and reconnect the Note after initial setup.

Ian

whenever i go to kies air it tells me to put the ip in the address bar and it takes me to the phone thru web browser, it asks to add a desktop icon or whatever but it just saves as SD and trys to open in adobe..
