google voice problems

Ive read up online people having issues making outgoing calls with google voice... that is not my problem, but it might be related.

I just got an Eris yesterday, and I am trying to get my google voice set up on here. I installed the application from the market place. I started going through the set up steps. I was able to sign in no problem, but when google voice tries to "verify" my phone number... it just hangs there until eventually it tells me there was a problem with google voice and it could not verify my phone number

anyone have this problem or know how to fix it?

thanks for the help, im excited to be a new android user!

You know why I uninstalled Google Voice? I would text friends from my computer when I was doing homework because I found it less distracting than picking up my phone. Also, I type a lot faster on a keyboard. And I can post links in texts faster to send to others with smartphones.

But...the texts still came to my phone. Can't stop that since I never text from my phone because I have unlimited. I just wanted to use Google Voice on my laptop. Can't change the settings. You have to sit with the annoying notification. Signing out on the phone doesn't work, turning off the internet doesn't work.

It got so annoying I just ditched it. The Skype app looks to be more useful than this. I still send texts on my laptop using Google Voice, but it's no long on my phone.

In case you didn't know, it's not free calling because you use an internet connection. It still dials a number out.

You can change google voice settings on the computer to make it not send a txt to your phone. Then it would only send an email when you receive txts. That's how i use gv to get free txting since i dont pay for a txt plan.

Also, we have Friends & Family on our plan so we set our google bridging numbers as one of the F&F numbers so we get unlimited outgoing minutes. Our minute usage this month was only 150 out of 1400 thanks to Google Voice.

I know the IM app that they have is free to use, but I think Skype charges for text messages though don't they? No telling what they plan to do with the new Verizon software though.

+1

We are on the F&F and use our Google voice numbers majority of the time now. We used about 450 of our 1400 last month and zero text messages by using Google voice. I am currently just sending text out using the Google voice app though and even after receiving them via the stock messaging app they don't appear to be costing me anything. I probably sent and received 50 text via the Google voice app last month and they aren't showing up on my bill.

Do you have a text plan?

I turned off Texts on my phone and use GV exclusively. How do you receive GV texts with the standard message app? I would love to have the texts pop up! Currently I have everything emailed to me. I use a gmail addy so they are pushed to me.

I currently have the $5 for 250 text per month plan, but I am planning to drop it very soon. I am still playing with everything and double checking my bill on a regular basis to make sure I am not getting charged for any of the text I am receiving. So far so good though. I was testing with a few people in my office on the first day and I haven't been charged for anything. I am still waiting on my current bill to really confirm this though.

My setup as far as it goes is that I am running 2.1 on my Eris and I have the Google Voice app V 2.0 on my phone. For SMS I just unchecked forward SMS messages to my email and they are showing up on my phone. I have been able to send and receive using my Google voice number with no problem. I always send via the google voice app, but I receive in both.

I will update you once the bill comes and I can see how many txt I have sent and received for the month.

OTD and I chatted offline but we can't figure out why she can receive her Texts in the stock Message app and I can't...

Here is my setup...

Running 2.1 leak (same as OTD), my GV number is different than my Cell number (same as OTD), I disabled "Forward SMS to email" in GV settings (same as OTD), we both have GV set to NEVER update...

doing this, I CAN receive the SMS in the GV app, but then I have to normal delay GV has (up to 5 mins). I did NOT receive the SMS in the message app...

edit: I also have Texts turned off by Verizon. I use Google Voice exclusively for SMS. OTD currently has a Text plan... might be a factor...

Anyone have any ideas? Solution?

Thanks.

Only setting I see in Google Voice pertaining to this is the "Forward SMS to Email" check box... Maybe it's a setting in the Messaging app? What app are you using?

I just have the stock messaging app.

Under settings for the app I have Auto-retrieve checked, priority is normal, received notification checked and play notification sound checked. That is it for the setting in the app.

Those are the only setting I actually see on the phone with regards to sms at all though.

I have that box checked so that it gets forwarded to my Gmail, which is pushed to my Eris so that's almost instantly.

There's the option "Receive SMS on this phone (mobile phones only)" in Google Voice. Click on your number from the website and then Edit. Then you'll see "SMS Settings"

But that shouldn't work if you disabled texting with Verizon.

Curious as to what is in your "Connection settings"? Is it:

Name
Production

MMSC
http://mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms

MMS proxy
Not Set

MMS protocol
WAP 2.0?

If they are something other then that I think it might have a play in this. Since it looks like the stock messaging app pulls from verizons servers directly...

That is the way it is set and it is all grayed out so I can't change anything. I originally figured that they would be pulled from Verizon and that somehow any message I was getting via GV was going to go against my messaging plan. However, when I look at my usage I am not getting "charged" for those messages. They don't show up at all on my Verizon information.

OTD, since you have a Text plan... do you ever see messages on your account or do you only see them if you go over 250 per month? Maybe since you're not over, you don't see anything...? Grasping at straws. :)

No, it shows every text that I have sent or received in the past month with the exception of those that went through my Google Voice number. I was just looking at my bill online and it doesn't show anything going to or from that number. I have sent and received roughly 300 text this month and I'm only showing 33 in my Verizon information. I did blow through an absolute ton of data though. It looks like I used just under 20 Gb of data. I am so screwed when they change the billing.

EDIT: My bill is showing 19614429 Kb that converts to 18.70 Gb. Is that right? God, I need to just put the phone down more often.

I just installed google voice and turned off receive txt notification. As of this moment I don't know where the contact list is for google voice app. Seems like the best way is just to type the name out until the list comes up.

I would just dump my txt plan, but I do send pictures and receive them too. Or do you guys plan to have people just e-mail them the pictures instead.

You can start typing your contact's name and options will show up. Or you can use the People widget and select the button that says "Send Message" for the number. The first time you do that, a pop-up will ask which program you want to use...Google Voice or Messages. You can check the box that will set it as default and then click GV.

I email pictures. Maybe down the line, Google will allow pix messaging? Who knows...

excellent.

What is this about OTD and other using 2.0? My GV seems to be 3.0, is there a difference?

They're talking about the leaked Android 2.1 that a bunch of us put onto our phones. With the new version, we had to go back to GV 0.2 because the newest GV version wouldn't let us dial out correctly. If you haven't done any upgrades to your phone's OS, don't worry about your GV version.

I also have the leaked 2.1, but I don't use out going calls with GV. My original plan was to have GV just to send and receive free txt. I may just start using the GV number as my primary once I understand all of the benefits.

EDIT: I just got the sound to work notice. But it takes a little bit before I get a notice. But if I have the GV app on, then the msg comes quick. I'm using 0.3.0. Anyone happen to have the older version?
